Title: Rogal Dorn

kaleb daark - September 5, 2009 07:24 PM (GMT)
Hi there

I had to take a break from the Custodes 'cause I have so many other projects I have to work on .... and I have to go to work....

But Since I've been leading an Imperial Fists army for about 8 years and I'm still such a big fan of the Horus Heresy era I decided to try to make a Rogal Dorn figure.

Here's the result of the first afternoon

Not great uh ?

And I 'm such a bad sculptor....

BUT I had the chance to make a deal with my friend Bruno Grelier (multiple GD winner)

and, after a month, I got this

(yes I'm a lucky man)

Now the painting

I wasn't so happy with the gold of my Custodians and I really wanted to get that one RIGHT ; so I asked around for some tips and i got this one:

On a base scorched brown, apply a first coat of a mix shining gold /snakebite leather . Then go to pure shining gold and finish with a mix of mithril and shining.
Then you've got to play with scorched brown, devlan mud and badab black washes

after 34h of painting :

Just one thing I'd like to say : my camera is a worthless piece of **** without a good macro and I don't have any real light gear. So these last photos make the figure look more brownish than it really is

And there's still a lot of work to do. The Cape isn't done yet and I'm planning on adding freehands paintings on it and the tabard, adding a few purity seal, and I'm sure I'll get some other ideas, maybe some inscription on the chainsword ....

:o

Where can I find a multiple Golden Demon winner???

That is simple FANTASTIC!!! I mean truly amazing version of Rogal! And your paint job is spot on flawless! Between you and Apologist, the Imperial Fists are becoming cool!

Imperial Fists have always been cool

That is one hell of a model well done.
Have you ever posted your IF on here before?
If not lets see em.

Very, very nice conversion and painting. :) As you're still tinkering, I'd suggest perhaps a thin wash of some colours on the gold to bring it out a little more? A great model as-is, though!

That is one awesome looking mini.
Shame about your camera.

It looks like you've done a nice job on the paint work regardless.

I too share the sentiment of the others and can't wait to see more canary yellow marines! :D

No I din't pots any Pre Heresy IF yet, simply coz they're still WIP for the moment (I have a "current time" IF army which part of it will be transformed )

The only PH IF marine yet done is this one:

Now that Dorn is by far the most primarch-like conversion I've seen. Big, imposing, a looks like a born commander.

The painting is being ripped up by flash and poor lighting, but it does highlight the need to add some other tones to the gold to make it flatten down a touch more consistently - some dark browns and maybe even hints of turquoise/green into the shades - hints of white in the high points of the highlights.

Great skin and hair tones, plus the red cloth is really cool.

The trooper is excellent too. You've been a busy boy in your absence ;)

Nice Dorn,That is one of the few Dorn's I have seen that is quite impressive!
Nicely Done,Haven't seen you around much Kaleb(So that is where you been hiding... :)

That Dorn does look really good, though the height of his breastplate in relation to his head makes it look like his neck is a tad too long.

I still want one though...

Salut Julien! I do believe this counts as a triumphal return. :D

Dorn looks fantastic, I think Benjamin should take advantage of Mr. Grelier's talents too, actually he should just use his own talents more.

That first Fist you've done is looking cracking, how long until we're going to be seeing more for these guys? If they're up to scratch with everything else I've seen of yours then we're in for a treat.
