Ultramarines movie! This has me rather excited, does anyone know anything more? or is it just more hopes and dreams being spoon fed to us by GW??
robert_the_damned - September 28, 2009 06:06 PM (GMT)
Supposedly a 70 miniute long CGI film, or so I've heard. :P
Hero of Istvaan - September 28, 2009 06:24 PM (GMT)
yeah same here, made by the same company that made the 'Bionicle' movies which were pretty good for animation so fingers crossed ;)
Tarik Torgaddon - September 28, 2009 07:37 PM (GMT)
Well it can really go one way or the other, but I fear they will make a bloody mess of it. Or I can be wrong and it will rock your socks off. We'll just have to wait and see.
ShroudFilm - September 28, 2009 08:35 PM (GMT)
Maybe my standards are ridiculously high... but from what I've seen, it is absolutely terrible. Fans of DOW will probably think it's the best thing ever though.

lord_caldera - September 28, 2009 08:51 PM (GMT)
If it's all CGI then it probably will be terrible. I think it would be way more impressive to go the actor/epic costume road like the ODST trailer and movies like Pan's Labyrinth (and armor would be easier to make than a satyr).
Manneus Drath - September 28, 2009 11:36 PM (GMT)
Woah, what Shroud? DOW Cinematic was awesome! :P
I'm not to excited about this though - merely for the fact its by Bionicle guys and its only 70 minutes.
Pacific - September 29, 2009 07:18 PM (GMT)
I didn't think the DoW intros were bad, but they were certainly lacking something. They need to animate parts of the armour, such as the shoulder pads, seperately (rather than just being attached to arm movements) and also I think the guys needed more 'mass'. By that, I mean that they didn't do a good job of conveying the marines as 7ft tall, half a ton behemoths.
Still at least its a start!
Shroud, was this the project that you knew of, but were forbidden from talking about under threat of exile to the new colonies? :)
Mortarion - September 29, 2009 07:30 PM (GMT)
I'd be more inclined to give it a chance if it was something other than Ultramarines. Theres so many more interesting chapters out there. What about the Mortificators or the Lamentors, Soul Drinkers, Iron Snakes or for even less known chapters like Deathstrike or the Star Dragons. Maybe it will be good, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Brother Handro - September 29, 2009 08:24 PM (GMT)
I'd imagine it's about the Ultras in order to pull in the casuals, as something about the Lamenters, Soul Drinkers, etc would be lost on those who had no idea or interest in the wider realms of backstory. The Ultras will allow a no-nonsense, paper-thin plotline for maximum CGI hack-and-slashery. Shudda been about the World Eaters! :D
Still reckon if it's bad to average, or poorly/cheaply done it will set back the cause of a proper live action/CGI 40k film another decade. :(
Hero of Istvaan - September 29, 2009 08:56 PM (GMT)
i think this is goin to be one of those things thats either goin to be absolutly awsome or a complete steaming pile of poopey, and the more i think about it i feel my heart sinking ever deeper :(
damn GW! why cant they just use some of the milions we gamers dump into them every month to make a proper movie!? <_<
ShroudFilm - September 29, 2009 11:05 PM (GMT)
I can't say.
My personal preference for such things would be less "kill everything in a cool dakka way" and instead "let's layer on the suspense, drama and grimy gothic aesthetic"... but I'm not the one with millions of slavering idiots to impress...
Simple solution to any GW film project - get James Swallow to write it.

Didn't he write an episode of ST:Voyager?
I know one of the BL writers has that claim to fame, especially as they are the only British writer to do a script for any of the Star Trek series.

According to IMDB he is uncredited writer for 2 episodes.
Link if you feel the need.
ShroudFilm - September 30, 2009 08:59 AM (GMT)
Aye, ST: Voyager. Plus FOTE is one of the most dark and gripping novels, and Heart of Rage is *fantastic*...

[possesion]"Because they have only just got out of debt and don't have millions for a movie, but I didn't tell you that. [/possesion]
what happend there? someone tried to tell me it was 2hours long
besides, they would have to run everything through new lane cinima whenever they want to do new 40k models <_<
Lord_Mortirion - October 4, 2009 11:48 PM (GMT)
i think thats gonna be camper than a row of pink tents!!!
Cyrox - October 7, 2009 03:31 PM (GMT)
I don't hold out high hopes for this....
Should been about Crimson Fists or Aurora Chapter if you ask me, not the poster boys.
But... anything is better than nothing so I suppose we should be grateful
Pacific - October 7, 2009 07:34 PM (GMT)
Aye, its a step in the right direction I feel. And don't tell me even the most critical of keyboard warriors aren't going to be excited as they're loading this one into their dvd player :D
Calgar 2.0 - October 7, 2009 10:26 PM (GMT)
I think it would have been better if it was either based during the Great Crusade, or if it was told from the perspective of the regular Imperial Guard soldier. Thats just my two cents though.

that would be good... as the story from a marines point of view would be boring as they have no fear... but from a whiteshield watching a marine go toe to toe with a daemon or something... hmmmmmm
Hero of Istvaan - November 18, 2009 04:48 PM (GMT)
i just recived the news letter form the official site announcing DAN ABNETT as the srceen writer for the film! suddenly all my fears for this film have all disappeared! :D
BigWill - November 18, 2009 05:58 PM (GMT)
Weird, while Dan is my Favorite I would of thought that Mcneil would have been a shoe in.
Either way very good news,How much you want to bet that they come out with an Ultramarine upgrade like the Space Wolves one.
And also that is when the console Space Marine will come out too.
Please Please Please let them have multi-player deathmatches on that one.
Hero of Istvaan - November 18, 2009 06:12 PM (GMT)
well the thq spokesperson at E3 where the game was announced already confirmed there will be a multiplayer facility and if u look at the end of the trailer for it at the bottom of the screen where it lists all the consoles it will be available on it has 'Xbox live' whice leads me to suspect it will be online multiplayer but either way i just cant wait for it to be released!!! ;)
Pacific - November 18, 2009 06:28 PM (GMT)
One thing I really hope they change from that initial game preview is the bolters.
Bolters aren't a massive rounds-per-minute weapon, they are meant to be "Bang!* "Raaaarrrkkk" *thud-kaboom!" (as Ian Watson once wrote). They are supposed to have only 15 rounds per magazine, and the game portrayed a bolt-pistol as something akin to an uzi 9mm... <_<
Well, thats my geek moment, really hope they change that though! :)
lord_caldera - November 18, 2009 06:45 PM (GMT)
In the trailer that came out following the initial gameplay test video the bolter looked a bit better. If I remember right even the heavy bolter was clearly firing single shots, which was definitely an improvement over that first video. The pistol there didn't even seem to do much, just knock dudes back so the marine could do some fancy chanswording!
BigWill - November 18, 2009 08:11 PM (GMT)
Pacific Are you talking about the first prototype pre-view that popped up last year with him fighting cultists or the one from this year with Orks?
I agree the Cultist one looked lame the newer a bit better.
I know it said live I am just hoping for Halo like deathmatches rather than a Co-op which is what I suspect they will do
I just reread Space Marine the Novel
damn that one has to be my favorite outside of the Heresy Books(not all) and Dan's Inquisition stuff

What he said sounded promising. Respect and preservation of the original idea instead of "Pew pew bam frakkin xenoooos". Although ofcourse that's a part of the idea. :)
We shall see.
