Title: Were any 40k SM characters alive during heresy?
rabblerouser - October 9, 2009 06:40 PM (GMT)
I mean aside from those that reside in the eye of terror. Bjorn? Is that it? How old is cassius?
Magos Explorator - October 9, 2009 08:44 PM (GMT)
Bjorn's the only loyalist SM alive before/during the Heresy who is still in some sense alive in M41.
Whitehorn - October 9, 2009 09:45 PM (GMT)
Plus the few now in stasis :)
Magos Explorator - October 9, 2009 09:48 PM (GMT)
I didn't count that as being alive now. ;)
Who do we know is in stasis*?
*Not counting Guilliman.
BigWill - October 9, 2009 10:28 PM (GMT)
Whitehorn - October 9, 2009 10:42 PM (GMT)
I figure Kharn sits with the EOT guys, such as Ahriman, Abaddon, Lucius, Fabius etc.
Luther wasn't a SM, but certainly in the clique :)
rabblerouser - October 9, 2009 10:51 PM (GMT)
Yeah all the chaos guys are still kickin. Kharn, typhus, ahriman, etc.
But as far as loyalists? Robute guilliman is alive but in stasis. Corax could be out there I guess.
As for old and still active marines.. we have bjorn in a dreadnought. Cassius is also old but I don't think he was around during the heresy.
BigWill - October 9, 2009 11:40 PM (GMT)
The oldest living Marine not counting The 13th company is Lord Dante who is 1100+ years old
Cassius is 400+
Whitehorn - October 9, 2009 11:44 PM (GMT)
So you're saying Bjorn, Abaddon, Ahriman, etc are all dead?
Pacific - October 9, 2009 11:53 PM (GMT)
I can imagine a fair number of chaos 'chosen' having been around during the Heresy. I guess if they were still alive they would have to be commanders in their own right by now, or maybe even daemon princes (the example of Sahaal's rival in Lord of the Night springs to mind)
Leman Russ SW - October 10, 2009 12:11 AM (GMT)
Cypher is still around and it is unclear what his intentions are so could be one of the good guy.

"Aside from those in the EOT" I took to exclude Chaos guys.
Good point on Cypher, LR. :)
Whitehorn - October 10, 2009 08:56 AM (GMT)
It's not certain whether Cypher is now a person or a position. It was a position during the GC, whose to say he hasn't died and been replaced, like Phoenix Lords... or Ace Rimmer!
Leman Russ SW - October 10, 2009 11:36 AM (GMT)
Good point, but unlike the Phoenix Lords (and Ace Rimmer) his weapons seem to be personal choice rather than standard for that position and his weapons in 40K are the same as 30K which personally leads me to believe its the same guy. Especially as it says in the Novels how young he is taking the post.
Iacton - October 10, 2009 01:46 PM (GMT)
You've got a load of 13th company SWs supposed to be stuck in the eye. Russ is supposed to be chasing DEs around (same with the Khan?), then most of the CSM legions' members are purported to be largely "original stock" (Iron warriors books/stories sort of refute that where they're permanently trying to pinch Imperial fist geneseed...), Bjorn, maybe one or 2 other dreads?

Yes, but they're all in the Eye. ;)
I think that we're supposed to assume Bjorn is the only Loyalist dreadnought from the Heresy era, otherwise such ancient heroes would have got more mention!
Gagoc TheAncient - October 10, 2009 10:05 PM (GMT)
Bulveye.
He's mentioned in Wolf's Honour (a 40K novel) and in Tales of Heresy (Wolf At The Door).
Same is probably true for some of his retinue.
rabblerouser - October 10, 2009 10:08 PM (GMT)
Dante is that old? wow. He must be an old man under that mask.

Hang on, is this saying that he's over 10,000 years old and still alive and fighting?
Kidjal - October 11, 2009 09:40 AM (GMT)
time flows differently in the eye.
Same is said for Cypher. Regardless of his position or status, if he is one of the fallen he was scatted throughout the warp like all the others.
It does say that some of the Fallen appear in the 41st millenium as if they had just left caliban, and have no concept of the time that has passed.
I'd wonder, if they ever expand the background for them, whether there are any custodes left. They are supposed to be super super marines afterall, you would think they would be the same "near immortal" astartes stock of 30,000.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten the 13th Company were in the Eye of Terror!

HEY, let's not be ageist :D He maybe old but he cetainly packs a punch. I believe Moriar (Death Company Dred special character of old) is older than Dante but I don't believe as old Bjorn.
Cyrox - October 19, 2009 12:29 PM (GMT)
Excluding Chaos, the only ones i can think of are:
1. Bjorn - as a dreadnought
2. Cypher - out there somewhere
3. Astelan - is he still alive or did the DA execute him?
4. Some of the other fallen - still at large, not neccessarily chaos
5. Guilliman - in stasis
6. Corax - missing, maybe alive
7. Vulkan - missing ( i think) maybe alive
8. Russ - missing, maybe alive. Old fluff states that the Space Wolves found his armour
Thats all i can remember really.
How long do the Eldar live? Maybe some of their very old Farseer's are over 10,000 years old
The Red Sorcerer - October 19, 2009 03:58 PM (GMT)
Astelan is still alive, at least at the end of Angels of Darkness. He is being held in a stasis cell deep beneath the Rock, like Luther.
Eldrad Ulthran was around during the Heresy, so lived at least 10,000 years. He was noted as being among the oldest of the Eldar Farseers though, so not many would have equalled his longevity. Eldrad himself died during the 13th Black Crusade.
Kidjal - October 20, 2009 08:33 AM (GMT)
So we've gone from Space Marines to Primarchs and Eldar.. wow, off topic :D
Slannesh is still alive, he was born yeeeeeeears ago!
;)
Pacific - October 20, 2009 05:52 PM (GMT)
Gulliman is in stasis, but isn't he technically dead? I remember reading about 'death wound' being visible on his neck.
lord_caldera - October 20, 2009 08:48 PM (GMT)
Yes but there are some people who believe that the wound is slowly healing, despite it being impossible for that to occur in stasis. I think his body is a popular pilgrimage site.
