Here is a link that may help you.
casting
Have a look here, matey:
Klaus, Not Santa's Cast-a-Walker. Also definitely have a look at the first site he links. Ultramar's tutorial is very concise and the rest of his stuff is breath-taking. Hope that helps!
I use the companies Trylon and Tiranti for my silicone and resins.
I use a two part (1:1) epoxy resin called quickcast which is ideal for small setail and limited run casting - it has a pot life (still liquid) of about 2 mins and then a de-mould time of about 20 mins, this can be extended or reduced by the addition or removal of heat so in cold conditions it takes longer to set (which can sometimes be an advantage).
I would recoment doing block moulds if it's your first time, simply place the part in a walled (clay is good - just cheap stuff) flat, clean area (gluing it down helps if it's light), then mix up the silicone and pour it in til it fills the walled area (this is usually by weight but what I found was if you divide up the tub of rubber and the bottle of catalyst so they correspond it removes the need to weigh out the contents each time you use it).
once the rubber has set (about 8 hours at room temp) you can then remove the walls and carefully slice into the rubber to release the original part, you can obviously then cut any parts where the rubber has creapt around something like a pipe. the important thing is to have a pour point - if for a hypothetical example I was making a mould and casts of something like say..... a set of space marine legs, the pour points would be the soles of the feet as these were the bits in contact with (and glued down to) the base plate (Ikea do a great desk mat in clear rubber which is ideal for both mould making and resin casting as neither the rubber of the resin will stick to it).
just a case of mixing your resin up and pouring it into the mould.
Most retailers of silicone rubbers recommend that you leave the silicone to stand for a week before using resins in it after you've removed the original part but if you're using plaster (herculite is a good strong dental plaster) then you can cast straight away - to be honest I can never wait and almost always have resin in my moulds 20 mins after I take out the original :P .
and there you go - in a nutshell :D
