Title: Ultramarines Second Company?

Falyaet Morphaeus - October 26, 2009 09:48 PM (GMT)
Hey guys! I've not been on for a while. You may remember me.. Torg.. Shroud.. Iacton... Miscellaneous people...

Anyway, I have a question. Something that's been bugging me. I've seen Ultramarines Second Company troops painted two different ways. The first is the standard blue and gold trim, but the second is with a lighter sort of blue, with YELLOW trim, and red weapons. What's up with this? Specifically, I ran into this while flipping through, How To Paint Space Marines . Hah. So any ideas on this? Which one is actually codex? Etc... Thanks

the second paint scheme was the one used before 4th edition of the game. so both are technically codex. IIRC, in the Insignium Astartes, Ultramarines got a small liberty regarding their shoulder pads as well.

the difference in the blue is the lack of black ink in the previous depiction of the color scheme.

Cheers

J.

You could say it was originally Yellow paint and the older they lived the more they improved on thier armor.
By 40k 99% of all the armor is Gold as oppossed to yellow.
Just go with what right with you.

Thanks, Will. I appreciate it. Mods, feel free to lock/delete this now that it's been answered. :)

Essentially, GW decided they preferred the look of gold trims to yellow. The explanation was that Company Commanders can decide how their company heraldry is represented - and in the rules of heraldry, white and yellow are known as metals and represent (and thus are interchangeable with) silver and gold. So the background justification (as opposed to the real life one, which is GW decided a darker blue and gold looked better than the older scheme) is that previous Company Commanders chose to have the trims in yellow, whereas the current Company Commander preferred to use gold. Presumably you could use the same justification to represent 1st Company marines with silver trims if you so desired.

it corresponds aslo as the time when Agemann moved to the first after the death of Invictus and Sicarius took his place as Captain of the 2nd

The dark blue with gold trims fit better with new GW imagery so the colors were updated.
