Does anyone know the rough date for the discovery of Genestealers/Ymgarl? Would 'stealer cults be a viable enemy for PH?

I don't know the date, but I can actually tell you it was around the RT time! :)

I think the first sighting of Genestealers was around Ymgarl in M36, which is a good while post-Heresy. However given their long-term scheming it might be possible for a very small number of cults--the very tip of the Tyranid invasion--to have been operating undetected beforehand.

RT was/is/has always been M41. The fluff has just been retconned so much that it looks completely different. There was no "Rogue Trader era" like there was a "1st edition Space Marine era", which was definitively set during the Horus Heresy, compared to 2nd edition which was M41.

And on topic, there are indications that Genestealers were infesting warp-stricken space hulks from before the Age of Strife (Space Hulk fluff) so they must have been around for a fair while...

Right, so... Genestealers formally recorded at Ymgarl in M36. Other variations (including the most common 'basic' form) later discovered infesting warp-stricken hulks which had been lost since before the Age of Strife.
