Title: Weiss' Iron Hands
Description: 8th Company, Dovernii Clan
Weiss - March 13, 2008 10:36 AM (GMT)
Have been doing some thinking and re-planned out the 8th company, having decided that if the Luna Wolves can have three hundred in a company, I can stick a few more in mine. Disposition, as well as a few name-changes as follows:
Officers:
Captain Deudermont (cookie for people who know where that name is from), Master of the 8th, Leader of Detachment Alpha.
Turc Johal, Leader of Deudermont's Command Squad and Second-in-Command. Captain's Equerry.
Turc Derakshan, Leader of Detachment Beta
Turc Tadeusz, Leader of Detachment Gamma
Attached Officers:
Iron Father Weiss with Heavy Combat Bodyguard.
or
Codicier Vaarus.
3 Techmarines
Squad List:
Deudermont Command Squad (5-man)
4 Veteran Squads
1 Veteran Swift Assault Squad (Jump Packs)
5 Ferrum Squads (20-man), Line Astartes. May be split into ten-man tactical squads depending on mission needs.
4 Tactical Support Squads (special weapons)
4 Heavy Support Squads
3 Assault Squads (Rhino-mounted)
3 Recon Squads (5-man)
Vehicles attached from Armoury.
Detachment Alpha:
Deudermont Command Squad
Veteran/Terminator Squad
Veteran Swift Assault Squad
Assault Squad
3 Ferrum Squads
2 Tactical Support Squads
2 Heavy Support Squads
1 Recon Squad
Detachments Beta and Gamma:
Veteran Squad (Command)
Veteran/Terminator Demi-Squad
1 Assault Squad
1 Ferrum Squad
1 Tactical Support Squad
1 Heavy Support Squad
1 Recon Squad
The current plan (having just about finished one squad and finishing the modelling on the second squad) is to build one of the secondary detachments for the moment, and in the very long-term (ie: between other projects), build up the rest of the company.
Anyway, pics tomorrow (if my partner remembers the camera this time… Might have to stick it to her… Where did I put that glue?).
Oh, also going to stick a termite in there, for the fun of it, though I'll have to use the drop pod or tempus fugitive rules for it...
Vredesbyrd - March 13, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
Really looking forward to seeing these guys Weiss I think they'll be the first things I've seen from you. If you put as much into painting and converting them as you do researching and writing on them I think we're going to be in for a real treat!
Ekaddon - March 13, 2008 12:04 PM (GMT)
May I ask why you´re using the CSM-codex? (not an avid player myself, so sorry if that´s a dumb question)
edit: other than that I second Vreds statement. Your army will kick many asses.
Weiss - March 13, 2008 01:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys.
Reasons: - 10-20 man squads
-havoc launchers
-large concentrations of special weapons
-much more customisable troops (and therefore more representative in fluff terms)
-opportunities for whacky conversions (ref: Iron Hands "noise marines")
-reaper autocannons
-bored of Codex Space Marines and Black Templars.
Those are the reasons I can think of off the top of my head...
Ekaddon - March 13, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
Whoa, these are some very good reasons indeed. Never thought of that...
Tarik Torgaddon - March 13, 2008 05:51 PM (GMT)
Looking forward to see em Weiss, Great to finally see some Iron Hands. Not alot of thoose around (Ph IH armies that is).
Weiss - March 14, 2008 01:09 PM (GMT)
Right, here we go.
I'll start with what should have been my entry for the SB competition. The Iron Gauntlett on his torso has since been removed as I didn't like the square I based it on (done with green stuff) and I'm in the process of redoing the banner arm as well. His name is Diirnoj, Deudermont's Company Standard Bearer (Chosen Icon Bearer). You'll notice he has a Templar sword (power weapon) which he was gifted with by Dorn's Templars for holding the breach during the Siege of Orval long enough for their Shield Wall to reinforce the line. He was sergeant of a Ferrum Squad at the time.

More to come as I get spare time (am in work...)
Angron - March 14, 2008 01:53 PM (GMT)
love those cold blue eyes.
Awesome work weiss
Weiss - March 14, 2008 03:24 PM (GMT)
Weiss - March 14, 2008 03:30 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah, almost forgot...
Thought I'd share with you the amazing painting on these dreads I just received...

(Shroud assures me it wasn't him... <_< ) :D
Tarik Torgaddon - March 14, 2008 04:01 PM (GMT)
wow, looks great weiss, I really like that banner bearer.
And I would have to agree with "my" primarch :P on the eyes. Anyway looking forward to see more of your work.
Almost forgott: when do we get to see termies?
Vredesbyrd - March 14, 2008 04:08 PM (GMT)
Wow Weiss these look brilliant.
I'm particularly impressed by your attention to detail, right down to converting the rebreathers on the bare heads.
Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Weiss - March 14, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
I though blue was most suitable. They love their cold anger...
Terminators are on their way, I have five of the old ones that I'm cutting up and reposing at the moment. Just gotta get hold of some .30 plasticard and I'll be away!
Iacton - March 14, 2008 04:30 PM (GMT)
Excellent, excellent attention to detail as Vred has already said ( <_< meh)
Quite a selection of parts to get just the feel that you wanted.
I'm glad to see the "scraped out" assault torso that you mentioned before, I have been considering doing it and I see that a fair bit of is required.
I think I shall need another inspired moment before I get too into it, that and a packet of Pro Create :P *slaps wrists* No shan't buy any!!!
As for the blue, it looks good, but if you aren't happy with them, treat them like a gem, start dark, work up to light.
The good thing with an area that small is that you CAN blend without mixing paints. Use whichever colours you want, but for blue eyes or gems, I use midnight blue base, then enchanted, then ice blue, then white. Keep them thin so the layer beneath shows and your set, plus if you make a mistake it is easy to correct.
Little bit of practice and you will nail it no probs judging by your other work :D
As for the Dreads...

Shroud, you never told us that you were so good at painting big toothy smiles
Lord_Mortirion - March 18, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
Weiss - June 5, 2008 03:41 PM (GMT)
Right, changed the plan as is in the first post. Though I'd give a run-down on what has been achieved (modelling-wise) so far:
Ferrum Squad 1: 10/20
Tactical Support Squad 1: 3/10
Assault Squad 1: 1/10
Termi Demi-Squad: 1/5
I have the pieces for my Dreadnought assembled but I want to get the first two squads completed before I start anything else.
There should be some pics on the cards after the weekend.
Iacton - June 5, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
Oh
Weiss! You tease!
I thought you were going to do pics, you bugger!
Anodyr - June 5, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
Does this mean that Havoc launchers been put to good use?
Cant wait to see some pics.
Tarik Torgaddon - June 5, 2008 03:57 PM (GMT)
:o NO Pic's! Damn you had me fooled there Weiss.
We need pic's now! :P
Weiss - June 5, 2008 04:02 PM (GMT)
I assure you, the missus is on it...
The Havoc Launcher has been placed, and I shall be adding some extra armour to the Rhino before the end of the weekend.
Sorry to tease guys, maybe I am part Slaneshi... Damn Vred!
Weiss - June 10, 2008 03:34 PM (GMT)
UPDATE!!!! Woohoo!
I'll start with the first ferrum squad. Got 10/20 of these guys done, five of which have been undercoated and had their first layer of boltgun+black wash, the other five have nearly been finished. The extreme highlights need refining and details need painting on, but the models may be reorganised at some point, so I'm holding off on putting tactical markers on. Anyway, piccies:

The Veteran Sergeant:

Normal Guys (you may recognise them):

More normal guys (icon bearer on the left for when I use C:CSM):

Plasma Gunners:
Lion El' Jonson - June 10, 2008 03:38 PM (GMT)
Nice work mate! You've nailed the look and paintjob completely :D
Weiss - June 10, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
Second Ferrum Squad, still WIP (backpacks, belt pouches, etc...). First goes with the Scorpions set, and although pinning every piece is a [CENSORED], they look damn nice. Pardon the lack of left shoulderpads, I have to buy a full Iron Hands box set to get the shoulderpads... (Incidentally, I'll be selling tactical squads
sans box for fifteen quid no p&p in the UK once I get passed the financial difficulties of buying passports).
Without further ado:
Veteran Sergeant (not sure what happenned with the picture here, these were all taken at the same time and place...:

Normal guys:

More of the same, middle one will probably end up in the first squad once I get some more running legs:

normal guy who will end up with the havocs and two meltagunners:
Weiss - June 10, 2008 03:44 PM (GMT)
And last but not least, we have a Cataphractii:

Now I'm wondering whether to go for the plastic/cardboard straps or to deploy the green-fu and rustle up some chainmail sleeves for this bad boy... Any advice/opinions?
Ooh, almost forgot, group shot w/rhino havoc launcher
*cheers Anodyr!* (sorry about the blurriness):
Magos Explorator - June 10, 2008 03:48 PM (GMT)
Hooray for updates! :) Looking very nice, especially the first Veteran Sergeant: very clean painting.
Weiss - June 10, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
@Lion: Thank you very much, now I just have to rivet it... :D
@Magos: Wow, somebody said I'm neat! My models generally look like the seconf half of the first squad until they're about 80% complete... Thanks man.
The sergeant was my first go at a large(ish) area of white. I thought I'd use the RT era scheme (at least I think it is) for my veterans:
Iacton - June 10, 2008 04:15 PM (GMT)
Yay! ^_^
You found the camera :P
Awesome assembly of parts and ideas, mate. The paint jobs are coming along nicely too - I think that I would lose the will to live what with all that highlighted black armour :o
For some reason my fave model so far is the guy with the suped up bolter on the left of the 1st pic. No idea why, just drawn to it!
That RT scheme was for apothecaries wasn't it? If I'm correct then just blame retconning and artistic license!! :D
Lion El' Jonson - June 10, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
Judging from the insignia on the white shoulder I'd say hes an apothecary, but the colour scheme itself is awesome for veterans B)
Tarik Torgaddon - June 10, 2008 04:54 PM (GMT)
Looks great Weiss :) many great convertions and a ace paint job. I especially like the sergeant of the first squad :D
As for the sleevs I would have gone for the leather(plasticard) straps, fits them more than chainmail.
Kharn - June 10, 2008 05:24 PM (GMT)
They look awesome Weiss!
I really like the terminator!
The color scheme looks ace too, keep it up!
Also, will we see Ferrus Manus anytime soon?
Weiss - June 11, 2008 08:05 AM (GMT)
@Iacton: Thank you. You mean this guy?:

He'll eventually be my entry for the Visual Codex project, I just have to decide on a damn clan symbol...
Ah well, they can all be apothecaries then... :D
The highlighting is simply a line of shadow grey, tidied up a bit with a black wash at the moment. More will go into it once I get the second half of the squad to the same level.
@Lion: I think so too. B)
@Tarik: I'm leaning towards the leather straps too. Thinking of using a single layer of cardboard (like the collar, just thinner). Getting them to flow with the motion of the model is going to be the greates challenge...
@Kharn: Eventually, I've started a concept sketch, and will probably be using a random destroyer torso I have lying around as a basis for the chest (Though it will be thoroughly green-stuffed so people don't think I suscribe to the whole necron connection trash). I want to get a solid army up and running, and improve my "-fu"s before I attempt it though...
Thanks for all the comments guys!
Iacton - June 11, 2008 09:46 AM (GMT)
That's the kiddie!
I think that the whitish arm is an ideal vet. sgt. idea really anyway, and several parts of the RT heraldry and colour schemes are brilliant to adapt into 30k and 40k.
I still like the idea of having different coloured armour for certain campaigns, personally, and even (the sheer heresy of it!!) camo patterned armour.
Vredesbyrd - June 11, 2008 09:49 AM (GMT)
Yay! Weiss flavoured updates. :D The Missus let you use her camera again then? :P
As usual everything here is looking damn sweet, I really like your Terminator, I don't know what it is about it, just something I really like.
Weiss - June 11, 2008 10:10 AM (GMT)
Camo pattern would make sense, but just looks poop (any I have seen anyway, feel free to illuminate me :D).
@Vred: yes, I was given permission... *sound of a cracking whip in the background* "yes honey..." :D
The shoulderpads are the buzz's ones. I filed off the round rims as, quite frankly, I think they look ridiculous. Problem is that there seems to be bubbles in the resin, so I'm going to have to go over them with procreate to smooth the rims, but other than that, they're great.
I did try Ron's method for a pair of shoulderpads (as I did with the collar), but misjudged the measurements and they looked ridiculously big. Seen as I already have five sets of the resin ones, I'll just stick with those.
Oh yeah, does the vehicle Storm Bolter look okay as a twin-linked bolter?
Lion El' Jonson - June 11, 2008 11:14 AM (GMT)
The combi bolter looks great, big and bulky, to me, better than the actual termi storm bolters.
The Red Sorcerer - June 11, 2008 11:33 AM (GMT)
Looking good! I particularly like the first plasma guy with the reinforced chestplate, very sensible ;)
The Terminator is looking good too. Good to see what the shoulderpads look like on the model, its hard to tell from the pics on the website. The collar looks very well done as well.
Weiss - June 11, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
Why thank you. I did the markings in pen, so was unable to erase them before the photos. Next time, I'll try and take the termi photos against a blueish background so you can see the shoulderpads better.
I thought that if the thing was big enough, it could believably contain two bolters stuck together...
Custodian of Terra - August 9, 2008 01:26 PM (GMT)
Brilliant stuff mate. The official Iron Hands level of awesomeness has raised from 8/10 the 9/10.
Weiss - August 12, 2008 06:58 AM (GMT)
Time for an update (though without pics, sadly).
First squad are practically done, just got to base them properly.
Been much more productive on the modelling front:
Finished giving the second squad accessories.
Built the Iron Father.
Built Turc Johal, Captain Deudermont's Equerry.
Built 8/10 Heavy Support marines, including two heavy bolters and two lascannons.
On an unrelated note, I've restarted my dark elf army, so a fair bit of time has been spent rebuilding warriors (I gave up Warhammer for a couple of years and just stuck all the models in a box...).
Can't give you an ETA on pics because the person who would usually upload them is moving and everything is getting packed away...
Shang - August 12, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
Cant wait for some more pics terminator looks awsome.
