Title: Codex Hands of The Emperor
Description: Custodians

Weiss - April 11, 2008 07:19 AM (GMT)
This is a long-term project that won't be finished for a while, but I hope to make regular progress on.

Codex Hands of the Emperor: Legio Custodes

Custodes Special Rules

Iron Will: Any unit with this rule may choose whether to pass or fail any morale/leadership test even if failure is normally automatic. Independant Characters with this rule confer it upon any unit they join.

Deep Strike: Custodians with this rule (except assault squads) may Deep Strike even if the mission rules do not allow it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legio Custodes Armoury

Custodian Armour: The Legio Custodes are equipped as befits the Emperor's personal army use the finest Heavy Battle Power with in-built communications and protection fields. Grants the model a 3+ Armour Save and a 5+ Invulnerable Save.

Guardian Spear: The Guardian Spear is a power weapon that adds +1 Strength to the wielder (bonus included in profile) and features a Bolter attachment, which may be fired as normal in the shooting phase (subject to the Gyro-Stabilisers rule). Two-Handed Weapon.

Combi-Spears: Guardian Spears may be fitted with special weapons, in which case the weapon replaces the boltgun attachment. The following special weapons may be chosen: Meltagun, Plasma Gun or Flamer.

Gladius: A short sword conceived in the same way as the Guardian Spear, made for use with a Scutum. The Gladius is a power weapon which features an integrated bolt pistol. This may be fired in the Shooting Phase as normal, and counts as an extra close combat weapon in the Assault Phase.

Scutum: The Scutum is a rectangular shield incorporating a field generator capable of deflecting strikes from weapons that would easily cut through any armour. They improve the wielder's invulnerable save by 1 in close combat.

Falchion: A two-handed sword of monstrous proportions. Used by the Shield Champions, selected warriors from their companies chosen for their supreme swordsmanship. A Falchion is a power weapon that adds +2 Strength and +1 Initiative.

Gyro-Stabilisers: All Custodian weapons are equipped with Gyro-Stabilisers. This has a different effect depending on the type of weapon:

Heavy: May be fired as normal while stationary. If moved in the movement phase, the weapon type becomes Assault and the Range of the weapon is halved. This effect does not apply to Sniper Rifles.

Rapid-Fire: For the purposes of shooting, the wielder counts as stationary when employing a rapid-fire weapon, whether they moved or not (so may always fire one shot up to maximum range). They may still charge in the assault phase.

Cameleoline Cloaking: A complicated field projector is installed into the wearer's armour. Increases the unit's Cover Save by +1 (and provides a 6+ Cover Save in the open). Any unit wishing to target this unit must use the Night Fighting rules to check if they can see the target. If the squad with this rule fires any heavy weapon other than sniper rifles, the squad loses this effect during the next opponent's shooting phase.

Jetbike: A jetbike changes the unit type of the model to Jetbike and adds +1 Toughness to the user.

Chariot: A Chariot adds +1 Toughness to the riders and changes the unit type to Jetbikes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legio Custodes Vehicle Upgrades

Anti-Grav Plate: The vehicle has been fitted with a power anti-gravity field generator and thrusters. This upgrade changes the unit type of the vehicle to Skimmer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are still some gaps to fill in. Any comments/suggestions? Is there anything you would really like to see in there/have made rules for yourself?

Torg - April 11, 2008 10:29 AM (GMT)
Looks good Weiss,I still don't have any core rules for my Emporer yet,
way to go! :D

Custodian Librarian? Chaplain?

The Emperor said no librarians so id say Chaplian. he'd look a bit hypocritical if he had a psyker in his ranks after the Council of Nikea.

Maybe add Custodian Knight squads, the ones with Spear and Storm Shield, there veterans essencially.

Guard Squads

What about Custodian Tactical squad with bolters?

And finally, if your including the Emperor surely you should include Malcador the Sigillite and Constantin Valdor?

EDIT: Also are you planning to make rules for the Sisters of Silence? If you want any help writing the rules for these guys just PM me.

Weiss - April 11, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
Cool, thanks for the input dude. PM coming your way in a bit :D

Sorry, I can't believe I forgot about Valdor...

I may include the Sigillite, eventually, though I'm not sure he was used much in a military capacity...

Concerning the Chaplain/Librarian thing, I'm not sure the Custodes would require chaplains to monitor the custodians' use of psychic power. Though their use in rousing the troops may be a reason to keep them in.

Iacton - April 11, 2008 12:11 PM (GMT)
Not too much into the gaming aspect Weiss, but here are my thoughts on this and the custodes mentioned in the other thread.

Instead of the storm shields suggested, and going by the majority of the artwork (I realise there are shield bearers in Sam Wood's panoramic pic) would it not be appropriate that the guardian spear is regarded as a 2 handed weapon and perhaps then the armour should have some type of power field instead against ballistics? I just imagine them swinging the spear about and firing up close and personal.

They just evoke the thought that they are essentially close combat shock troops to me, using short(ish) range weapons using flame or melta weapons perhaps as support. The essential difference might be master crafted EVERYTHING?

Also I don't suppose that the Emperor's personal troops need much in the way of spiritual guidance :D

I'm sure that most of what I'm saying is inaccurate for the gaming side (I haven't played since about '96) but hopefully it's food for thought.

Weiss - April 11, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
Well, we could give them an invulnerable save as standard, but that would involve another price hike... Hmm, maybe if they all have a 5+ invulnerable, then the Command and Knight Squads get a combat-shield style bump on their invulnerable in close combat (so a 5+ against shooting and 4+ in combat)...

It's certainly food for thought, no worries there dude, any comments are more than welcome!

Thanks for the feedback! Was starting to think that me and Fulgrim were alone on this... :D

Iacton - April 11, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
If you don't have anything good to say..... ;)

Weiss - April 11, 2008 01:02 PM (GMT)
 Right, incorporated some of the views expressed and changed the entry for the bodyguard. Will add specialist entries when I find time this afternoon.

Iacton - April 11, 2008 01:25 PM (GMT)
Ah, just confirmed something else that was niggling at me "Shield" Captain is mentioned once or twice in the Visions books. Now this could be taken up one of two ways perhaps.
1) A company of Custodians is called a Shield or something along those lines.
Or
2) A Shield Captain is some sort of Champion amongst champions maybe - fulfilling the pesky Chaplain bit.

Weiss - April 11, 2008 02:51 PM (GMT)
Hmm, I'd lean towards option A personally. Ammending...

Personally I dont like the image of them all carrying square shields. When i had a go at this before my PC crashed I did this :

Blessed – The Emperor blesses every custodian. As such each custodian has an invunerable save of 5+ unless stated otherwise.

BigWill - April 12, 2008 07:39 AM (GMT)
I'd make Valdor or Priceps with 3 wounds

Weiss - April 14, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
They won't all be carrying shields. That was just an idea for the command squad. Done some work on this over the weekend and will post up what I have as and when work permits me to.

Valdor will have four wounds. That command squad was originally made in a BOLS style way (to be added to your army).

Fulgrim: I intend to, though you are welcome to develop them yourself if you like (they wouldn't get sorted until I've finished with the Custodes anyway).

[EDIT]: Right, added the Tactical Squad and Shield Captain for your perusal. Also modified the Command Squad entry. Next stop: Terminators! :D

Fulgrim - April 14, 2008 01:15 PM (GMT)
I thought the Ares Guard were in Terminator armour. I think they should be to show the characters status and also if the Emperor is leading the unit then his guard would have the best weapons and armour possible.

Weiss - April 14, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
The Ares Guard are the guys next to Valdor. They have the standard armour and guardian spears. Maybe the termi command squad entry can do that.

I think termi armour is more of a specialist armour in the way it restricts dexterity, speed, etc...

Fulgrim - April 14, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
On a second look you are correct. I stand illuminated. ;)

Weiss - April 14, 2008 01:52 PM (GMT)
Termi squad added, assault termis hopefully later today :D

Fulgrim - April 14, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
Nice but i have two minor issues:

1- 3 Terminators is a bit out of the norm maybe just add in one more?
2- what about the flamer-lance that i've seen in the artbooks, surely they must get a heavy flamer?

Weiss - April 14, 2008 02:09 PM (GMT)
Thanks for catching the booboos man. I was thinking of a command squad when I wrote down the squad numbers. Heavy Flamer added.

[EDIT]: And Assault termis added (you've got you flame-spears... :D :P)

Iacton - April 14, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
A thought to make those Terminator fire dragon style weapons a bit more than "just" a heavy flamer might they be counted as a multi-melta?
They are after all rare in those times. I happen to have a squad of them in my pile at home by the way, maybe one day I'll finish one

Weiss - April 15, 2008 07:32 AM (GMT)
The problem with that is that they would then become a tank-hunting unit, which, I'd assume isn't what they're supposed to be...

Oh, and Iacton, is that a converted squad, or did you get them from somewhere? :ph43r:

Come to think of it though, I could make them Heavy Flamers, though I feel that would be pointless, you're already laying a minimum of five flamer templates, charging in at S6, I5 with 16 attacks...

[EDIT 16/04/08]: Added the Recon Squad entry. Let me know what you think guys!

Fulgrim - April 17, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
I like them i cant see any problems with either the Recon Squad or the Foot Knights. Keep it up!

Iacton - April 17, 2008 12:09 PM (GMT)

Like I said before. I don't play but I thought it would make for fun hunting dreads and renegade terminators, as well as tearing the occasional tank a new door :D

They are real and they come from deepest Russia :ph43r: . I'll photo one, but Itsme has already done one in the Custodes Index ;)

Weiss - April 17, 2008 12:28 PM (GMT)
Cheers Fulgrim.

Ah yes, now I see it, shame the website is gone... My cookies went loopy on me around that time and told me I'd read all the new topic's on here when I hadn't (damn workplace administrators! ).

[EDIT]: Added Constantin Valdor. Too hard or just right? Not too sure about Pts cost at the moment.

I like him but i'd lower his attacks to 4 otherwise it seems a bit too over-powered. As for the points cost i worked it out at about 210pts which seems about right.

A space marine commander with a close combat weapon, terminator honours and a bolt pistol has 5 attacks, and Valdor doesn't get an extra CC Weapon... I've added 40pts to his cost though. Also reduced the strength on his guardian spear at range.

[EDIT]: Added the Annihilation Squad. That post is getting damn long...

Good, but maybe add the option of 5 more custodians armed with bolters.

Right, just added the Rhino and Drop Pod. Also added the start for the (braces himself) Emperor. Still got to add any psychic powers he is gonna have, but as a basis, what do people think? (nothing for him is yet set in stone, or for the rest of the Codex for that matter...).

Just added the "Companion" entry in the Elites section. They're supposed to represent, along with the Ares Guard, the 300 custodians who are allowed into the Emperor's presence and personally guard him. Any thoughts?

Nice list! :D the only problem i really have with it is they're custodian guards! personally i'd lower the invulnerable save to 6+ and increase their armor save to 2+, or leave the invulnerable save and just increase their point cost a little. Just my thoughts......

*prepares to get yelled at*

Don't worry man, I'm looking for criticism, as long as it's backed up by reasoning and is constructive.

See, I thought that (about the 2+ save), but then they ended up as all being terminators...

On the other hand, a 6+ save just seems completely worthless to me...

I'm thinking to add 5pts to the basic troopers though... It does make sense in an "adding up the components" way. I think I was more focussed on giving the army list a viable troops choice, but then anyone playing this list would have a lot of conversion work to do anyway, so they may not want as many troops...

Hmm, expect a complete points revision in the next few days.

Cheers Vladinhurst!

Added the Land Raider. Still thinking on a few more vehicle upgrades though, so this may change.
