Title: APRIL 2008 - Sons of Horus
Description: Sotirios' take on the Warmaster's finest
ShroudFilm - May 4, 2008 01:04 AM (GMT)
Firstly, big apologies for the delay in posting this... I wrote a big article complete with pics but it seems to have been lost somewhere amidst my endless re-organising. Many thanks to Vredesbyrd who jumped in and penned a replacement!
Secondly, keep those nominations coming people - I'm liking just how much enthusiasm you are all showing for each other's work... :)
=====================================================
This month's entry for the Display Case comes courtesy of
Sotirios and his amazing
Sons of Horus. These guys are one of the few collections of
Sons of Horus on these boards, and as such are very deserving of their place in the hallowed halls of the Display Case! –
Vredesbyrd.
A few words from Sotirios himself:
I am really glad that my Sons of Horus will be April's entry. This army started as an idea inspired by the Horus Heresy novels as I really liked Loken and Torgaddon, and the way they were presented in the opening trilogy. In the beginning I was thinking about creating a Luna Wolves force but I finally decided to do a Sons of Horus force for two reasons: firstly to honour the loyalist Sons of Horus, and secondly to have a unique force which would make everyone interested in the 40k saga much more involved in the game.
As it happens I’ve played the game for about seventeen years now (I’m 32) and I really love the way it grew up into something bigger than I ever imagined. In fact this army is my favourite one although I still like my Fallen Angels force and of course my ever reliable Wolves of Fenris (about 10.000 points...) but these Sons of Horus have really captured my heart as I was forced to work for each model with special care to give a pre-Heresy feeling to each of them. A lot of conversion work, a lot of searching in the bitz box and of course careful painting!
For the main colour I used 3:1 Knarloc Green and Codex Grey. I also painted all the insignia and latin numerals as I did not want to use transfers. If I must choose a piece that played the most important role in this force I would choose the Berserker helmet that my Standard Bearer wears, which - with a little bit of extra work - looks fantastic in combination with a pre-Heresy force.
At this moment I don’t have much time to work on my boys but in a month or so I hope you will see my pre-Heresy Land Raider and a full Terminator squad... I don’t want to rush because painting for me is a trip.
And as the famous Greek poet Kavafis says "If you ever take a trip down to Ithaka, wish for this trip to be a long one..."
Best regards,
Sotirios

Standard Bearer – Brother Aimnistos.
Command Squad.

Sotirios’ personal favourite character –
Garviel Loken.
This guy is painted in the black of the First Company under
Ezekyle Abaddon.

Congratulations to you, Sotirios. I've always thought that these Sons of Horus were perfect examples of the XVI Legion. The colour is great, the freehand is precise and very well done, and the conversions are fantastic. Easily one of the best Pre-Heresy armies I've ever seen. I'm really looking forward to seeing those Terminators and the Land Raider.

Congratulations Sotirios.
Really glad that we have your work in the "case" now and looking forward to the update. Your attention to detail is great and the whole feeling behind your force is excellent too.

Its always nice to see a coherently painted force, and Sotirios you've excelled yourself with these boys. Loken is one of my favourites thanks to that freehand on his cloak, but I love your banner bearer too.
little horus - May 16, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
so the sons of hours where green IS THAT RIGHT !!!!
Magos Explorator - May 17, 2008 11:55 AM (GMT)
Yes--the exact shade is open to interpretation, as I think there's only 1 picture (and no 'official' miniatures), but the Index Astartes article and one of the Horus Heresy novels describe it as being a 'metallic sea green'.
The Luna Wolves wore white, and later as the Black Legion they're black. As far as I know the Justaerin wore black during all incarnations.

Little Horus, I get the impression you've not read any of the novels...?

Is there any chance of a tutorial at all Sotirios or even something as simple as the ratios and paints you use to paint these guys?
Stormchaser - August 9, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
Wow. Awesome stuff dude.
On the second crested marine, where did you get the crest from?
Loken is spot on! :D
Falyaet Morphaeus - September 18, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
OHHHHH so THATS where the Black Legion colours came from  !!!
Hey, even a devoted HH fan has his...um...moments of....idiocy?
:D
Sotirios - September 22, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
Thanks again for all of your kind comments. The ratio for the green colour is 3 : 1 knarloc green/ codex grey. I hope this helps.
For the Warmaster!!!!
