Drama was a fantastic dance-pop effort that had only one thing going against it, the name Bananarama, which everyone associates with 80's pop. Such a shame, the album could've been a success but people saw the name Bananarama and dismissed it without a listen.

I've loved loads of their singles. Am not too sure about the repeated comeback attempts but certainly don't begrudge them.
I've seen the interviewed a few times recently - they've turned into Patsy and Eddie!
johnnox - May 9, 2008 02:45 PM (GMT)
urgh.. talentless then, talentless now...cruel summer, venus and help were about the best ... I remember going to school with a guy who thought they were better than and had more influence than the beatles.
Karbatal - May 9, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
Johnnox, you are soooo Mr Scrooge!
They were fantastic and they were so themselves, they laughed at themselves a lot and they were, together with Sam Fox, the few acts that were not puppets in Stock Aitken Waterman's hands
Their hits collection is BRILLIANT!!!!!

rofl, they should have a reality show, "Absolutely Bananarama"
FuckBuddy - May 9, 2008 10:39 PM (GMT)
they made some unpretentious, fun pop. i should get their greatest hits album, it'd bring up so many fond memories.
Jimmy Mack - May 9, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
Their greatest hits is one of the all time great party albums!
And they were no-one's puppets either. Even serial ego-maniac Pete Waterman admitted that he had to shut up and listen when the Nana's wanted to have their say.
Karbatal - May 10, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
yes, ha ha, he said that they went to negociate with 3 dogs and the dogs used to be growling all the time so he had to accept all their conditions, for example having muscle men in all the videos and deciding which songs were included and which not.
It was a pity when Siobah left the band. I recall they are still good friends and i remember Karen and the other said that they hired Jackie (the ugly one that came after Siobah) because she could drink as much as they did, hahaha. Oh, dear, they were fantastic.

I think you have to be of a certain age to truly appreciate Bananarama... I am and I did.
They belong to a far more innocent age when pop was fun and frothy and Top Of The Pops was the highlight of the week!
Riverwide - May 10, 2008 11:41 PM (GMT)
I remember our entire street of kids literally dropping everything and rushing into a friend's house to see the video for Wham's "Club Tropicana" on TOTP.
Ah, innocent times!

:lmao:
SO TRUE.
I just love watching documentaries about them because they are always chock full ofA and R, executive, and manager types etc. all lining up to tell tales of the girls sitting there in important meetings all sulking, pouting, and whispering at each other ... until Siobhan would finally pipe up and say "Nah, we're not doing that, we're doing THIS!".
Jesus, can you imagine even the "ballsy" girls bands of today, like Sugababes and Girls Aloud, doing that?
Riverwide - May 10, 2008 11:48 PM (GMT)
I assume a Greatest Hits is the best way to hear these bints? I've quite liked some of their single over the years.
Riverwide - May 11, 2008 12:09 AM (GMT)
I've just remembered how much I love "Nathan Jones"!

Yes. Your best bet for a comprehensive singles collection would be the 1999 Greatest Hits that was released in Holland - you can probably find a physical copy on Amazon, and the slightly different 2007 re-release (with a fuckawful yellow version of the cover) is on UK iTunes.
Getting back to Bananarama's music, I really love their singles, particularly "Venus", "Preacher Man" and "Rough Justice" (the harmonies are FABULOUS).

Yeah. They didn't give a fuck. Modern girl groups are so manufactured and packaged like expensive perfumes. Bananarama were glorious because they were clearly making the whole thing up as they went along.
God, I feel so nostalgic today for happy days gone by. Blue remembered hills! I must sound like a right old numpty!

I love "Preacher Man". By anyone's standards, it's a cracking little pop dance tune.

I've only just found out that "Nathan Jones" is a cover of a Supremes song! Whoops!! :shy:
