Yep. The only good bit of it was dancing in front of the crucifixes.

The rest was shit. They should have used the single version as well, not the dull album version.

How about the bit at the end where Madonna mouths to the officer "He didn't do it" with all the subtlety of a Cher concert at Ceaser's Palace. :lol2:

Some of mine are her worst for a lack of trying (Jump) and others because they are just meaningless examples of vanity (What It Feels Like For A Girl) which I find more irritating.

In chronological order:

Who's That Girl - Not boring in an at-least-she's-pretty-a-la-Live To Tell-boring, she's just plain boring. This is the last time she truly looked "Italian."

You'll See - yeah she's pretty, but this pretty sums up this point in her career. Far more interested in her image at the time rather than making good music. Points taken also for thinking if the video was Take A Bow part II it would recreate that success. In fact points taken off for even reminding me of Take A Bow. :lol2:

The Power of Goodbye - From the Ray of Light album forward Madonna has time and time again chosen style over substance with mixed results, ditching the storyline based videos. Once again she's pretty and the dark hair suits the video, but that's about as much thought as she put into the video. She's sad, and dark hair is sadder than blonde hair, right? The lush colors are beautiful but do little more than make this video look like an artsy Revlon Covergirl ad. As a last ditch effort, Madonna leaves us wondering if she's committed suicide at the end of the video for you know, some extra meaning.

What It Feels Like For A Girl - I really hate this video. A real divider among fans. Some thinking this is some deep social commentary on a woman's role in society. While I just think it was an excuse for Guy to crash some cars and try and be clever (how many times has "pussy cat" been used tongue in cheek?) and for Madonna to be controversial. The biggest insult was Madonna's explanation that she hoped "this video will spark discussion." About what exactly? Her daring new haircut? Her oh-so-very-ironic pairing of stilettos with an auto mechanic's uniform?

American Life - The flag version is crap obviously. Can't really go any more analytical than that can we? Many consider the original video among her best. It wouldn't be anywhere near my top ten. It lacks the warmth to enjoy it on a superficial level. It lacks the cohesion to enjoy it as a mini movie. And it lacks the clarity to take any sort of moral lesson away from it. It suffers from the What It Feels Like For A Girl syndrome.

Hollywood - The problem I mainly have with this video is just disappointment. This is Mondino! In every scenario Madonna finds herself, her eyes are dead. She ages about 10 years in every clip. Seriously, stare in her eyes during this video, there's nothing there. On a commercial level following the American Life debacle she really needed to step it up and this is what we got. Madonna thought she could bring art into video again and be praised for how avante garde her views were. But really, it was a painfully literal translation of Guy Bourdin's photography when in actuality Madonna works best when she is working with multiple meanings as opposed to a straight forward adaptation.

Sorry - Somebody keep Jaimie King away from the camera STAT. That hairsyle she sports is worse than the Farah Fawcett curls she was so insistent on. The gaudy colors don't make the video fun, they make you squint. The roller skating disco image is so overdone. The cage could have been really well done if Madonna actually bothered to learn some dance moves as opposed to the heavily edited yoga sequence she concoted. Wisely, the editors cut to multiple angles at a quick pace to give the illusion that this dance sequence actually works. This is a song that the video could have worked with a darker twist, using imagery of the underground 70s, not the roller skaters on their first date gimmick. Boogie Nights keeps popping into my head.

Jump - What a waste of a perfectly good wig. :lol2: I know she was busy on tour, that's fine by me. But literally using a bevy of hipsters jumping from wall to wall for a song called Jump is too much to stomach. Madonna has always been at her most cringe worthy when she becomes all too literal. She's at her most relevent when she kicks her double entendres into overdrive.

Fembot 1 - May 30, 2008 03:07 PM (GMT)
Sorry (disco granny - totally embarrassing)
American Life part deux (Truly an insult to flags and gloves!)
Hollywood (hag-adelic!)
Music (shoot the stylist...and everyone else involved!)
Jump (is that a barrel I hear being scraped??)
True Blue (fugly)
Who's That Girl (ground breaking animation...NOT!)
Love Don't Live Here (an insomniac's dream)
Me Against The Music (aka 'how to piss on your legacy')
Crazy For You (boring as fuck)

:sadbitch:

johnnox - May 30, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
Goldtooth, although i disagree with some of your choices, you put your opinions across BRILLIANTLY!

johnnox - May 30, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
Deacs, I initially had True Blue on my list, but time has been kind to it and now it just looks silly and innocent and twee, hence its removal.

bulletproof_heart - May 30, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
ooh yeah True Blue is awful

johnnox - May 30, 2008 04:36 PM (GMT)
but it has a kind of kitche quality to it now. It reminds me of a more innocent time, when she'd put a melody above production values.

this used to be my playground-fits the song yet looks cheap, could have been so better
love don't live here anymore
you must love me
music
what it feels like for a girl
american life- flags edit
love profusion
sorry
jump

once she realized the music video medium was no longer an important factor in promoting her product, the quality of her clips went downhill.

In no particular order :

True Blue, such a bad video for a really bouncy song !
Dear Jessie- does this one even count?!
I’ll Remember- no, I’d rather forget!
Who’s That Girl- I don’t know, she looks a little like the androgynous Madonna in the end of the Open your Heart video.
Jump- such a waste of a song and a great director.
Love Don’t Live Here Anymore- WORST EVER!
You Must Love Me- uh…no I don’t!
American Life flag version- the director’s cut and the second version (Bush look-a-like) are excellent, this version is quite possibly her second worst video after LDLHA.
Live to Tell- great song, totally uninspiring video! And too many shots of Sean Penn.
Add any other less-than inspiring video (Playground, Love Profusion, maybe Sorry).

However, Music is a GREAT video. It’s totally pastiche and postmodern. On an intellectual level music videos don’t get much better than this one. I find the song OK, except for when I’m in the mood to hear it. But the video is fascinating!

Hollywood is also a great pastiche, not quite on the level of Music, but interesting too. Not her best video, but far from being the worst!

WIFLFAG is a classic! Almost on par with LAP, excellent video! How can either of these two be dissed?

I can’t put Crazy for You or Lucky Star on the list. I remember when they came out. I guess it’s nostalgia.

It is! I have my students study this one for an overall introduction to postmodern theory. It encompasses it all. Quite possibly the best video of all time. Not my favorite, but as far as the genre goes it's a masterpiece.

are you serious or are you being ironic?

The animated bit is terrible, the cartoon madonna can't even sing or dance in time with the music, she looks awful, Ali G's delivery of his lines are embarassing... the whole this, as Brad would say, is a HOT MESS.

Jimmy Mack - June 2, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)

I'm never really inclined to rank the 80s ones, because if they are just "fluffy ideas" like "True Blue" they are going to date just because of the production values of the time. But I can't really think of any that are that bad, all things told.

Lately, however ... fucking hell.

Shit/sub-par videos she's done (not in order):

"Deeper and Deeper" (which, actually, in comparison to some of the recent ones is a masterpiece)
"Fever" (cool sliver lady images, but otherwise forget it)
"I'll Remember" (exceedingly dull)
"Secret" (ditto - but for all its "urban" pretentions, it's just a snooze)
"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (Siouxise and the Banshees' "The Last Beat of My Heart" but with a budget)
"You Must Love Me" (need I say more)
"The Power of Goodbye" (she looks wonderful but it's not engaging in any way)
"Music" (flat, flat, flat)
"Love Profusion" ("You've got me for one hour, asshole, between English Roses readings, and I ain't talking off the fucking dress.")
"Jump" (not worth talking about)
"Get Together" (dire animation trying to pass it off as quirky)

"Sorry" - the WORST thing she's ever done, visually. Deeply, deeply, embarrasing granny drying to dry hump the kids (in roller boots!) to prove she's still got "it". And that fucking leotard again!

henZ - June 3, 2008 07:57 AM (GMT)
I still think the Get Together video is very good. Lazy, yes, but it's beautifully done.

engin - June 3, 2008 10:52 AM (GMT)

i would much rather have the Get Together video as it is than just the live footage. At least some effort was put into it, unlike Jump.

SO TRUE :lmao:

10. Music (Ali G is just...no.)
9. Love Don't Live Here Anymore (gorgeous song, boring video.)
8. Dear Jessie (:manson:)
7. Sorry (Just GROSS - especially the part when M and her dancers start licking [or humping, I can't tell] that obese dude :vomit:)
6. Get Together (it feels like it was cobbled together a bit too fast.)
5. Jump (Aside from M's amazing outfit, it pretty much sucks. So bland.)
4. You'll See (as with LDLHA, the video just bored me. The song is a completely different story.)
3. Secret (l-a-m-e)
2. Live to Tell (it could've been so much more, but most of it is clips from some shitty Sean Penn movie.)
1. --

The Secret video never bothered me.... I always thought the song was worse than the video....

Matys - June 3, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
I quite like Secret, both the video and the song. It was totally different from anything she had done before. By the way, the videos from the BS era were all hits.
