DJ Greening Died After Kinky Sex Session
Former radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening died following a marathon gay bondage sex session while high on a cocktail of drugs
including cocaine and ecstasy, an inquest heard today.<QA1>
Wearing a rubber suit the 44-year-old presenter, who co-hosted the BBC’s Radio 1 Breakfast show with Zoe Ball in the 1990s,
was suspended in a sling from an “elaborate” scaffold in his South London flat for around four hours during a seedy sex game
involving cling film and a leather hood with boyfriend Sean Griffin.<QA1>
He died of suspected heart failure after consuming cocaine, ecstasy and the date rape drug GHB during a kinky 24 hour bender
ending on Dec 29th last year, the eve of his 45th birthday.<QA1>
Hours before the tragedy Greening, who worked for Smooth Radio, and his partner of two years Mr Griffin, a 51 year civil
servant, had changed into a skimpy black leather outfit and partied for five hours at Gay nightclub XXL in Southwark, the
inquest was
told.<QA1>
They returned to Mr Griffin’s flat at around 5am and after a short sleep they took more drugs and began their bondage session
at around 11am.<QA1>
Police photographs shown at Westminster Coroners court showed the bizarre apparatus installed in the bedroom of Mr
Griffin’s flat in Battersea.<QA1>
One of the pictures, which were not made public, showed an X shaped sling attached by chains and hooks to galvanised steel
scaffolding poles erected around Mr Griffins bed.<QA1>
There were also wrist restraints, a black leather face mask, black wellington boots and army style boots, black boxing gloves
and a black leather dog collar.<QA1>
Mr Griffin, who was close to breaking down as he gave evidence this morning, told the court: “Kevin and I had a very happy and
very vigorous sex life.
<QA1>
“It was not conventional by heterosexual norms perhaps, but it was a sex life which was vigorous and imaginative and we
enjoyed each other.”<QA1>
He said Mr Greening was suspended in the harness from the four corners of the scaffold and was laying on his back in a
horizontal position with his legs raised.
He would wear a black leather mask for up to 40 minutes at a time, and Mr Griffin wrapped cling film and gaffer tape around his
lower body.<QA1>
After about four hours, at around 3pm Mr Griffin said Mr Greening appeared to be the worse for wear for drugs.<QA1>
Mr Griffin told the court: “Kevin looked as if he was on the verge of sleep. His eyes were closing and he looked as if he was
ready to lie down and have a sleep.<QA1>
“I was not particularly concerned for his health it was just that he was fatigued and I thought it was time for him to have a
break.<QA1>
“We had had a lot of drugs. He was lying in the sling on his back and the bed was folded away against the wall.<QA1>
“I released the sling and dropped Kevin on to the duvet on the floor. He was still wearing the rubber suit and still had cling film
and gaffer tape round his lower body. Then we went to sleep.”
The court hear the bed had been folded away to make room for the sex game.<QA1>
Mr Griffin added: “Only when he woke up a few hours later did he realise something was wrong. Kevin was still lying in the same
position and he looked pallid and I immediately knew something was wrong.<QA1>
“He looked quite pale to me and the area around his mouth looked quite grey. That’s why I became alarmed.”<QA1>
An emotional Mr Griffin told the inquest: “We have done this on previous occasions. We had an active and loving
relationship.<QA1>
“Sexually it was perhaps not a relationship which would be regarded as conventional but we enjoyed each other very much. It
was a catastrophic night.”
Forensic pathologist Doctor Nathaniel Carey told the court there was a “significant” amount of drugs in Greening’s
body.<QA1>
He said: “There really is a cocktail of drugs there. Bearing in mind we have essentially a negative autopsy with no other causes
of death I think the only reasonable conclusion is that he has died of mixed drug toxicity.”<QA1>
Dr Carey said he had found signs of asphyxiation in Mr Greening’s body, but ruled out strangulation saying there was no injury
that indicated a compression of the neck.<QA1>
A paramedic who found Mr Greening’s now naked body after Mr Griffin had dragged him into the light of the living room,
described how his face and upper chest had a strong purple discolouration, which the court heard is usually a sign a person
had been in
a head-down position shortly before or after his death.<QA1>
Dr Carey said being in an unusual position can stop a person breathing, especially under the influence of drugs and this can
lead to a seizure.<QA1>
But there was not enough evidence to say whether this had contributed to Mr Greening’s death. Mr Griffin, who was arrested on
suspicion of murder but later released with a caution for possessing drugs, denied that Mr Greening had been in an “upside
down
position” during their sex session
The cause of death was given as mixed drug toxicity.<QA1>
Mr Greening had recently split from his partner of 17 years Andy Lowe, with whom he continued to share a home in North
London, when he met Mr Griffin.<QA1>
The coroner, Dr Paul Knapman, said: “We have heard evidence of behaviour that many may find unusual or deviant, but
nevertheless it does seem this death followed conduct by consenting adults in private.”<QA1>
He recorded a verdict of misadventure.<QA1>

How awful to have all that detail broadcast to the world :(
I'm not into that shit, but I have no problem with people who do, and it's not nice to think all this is out there :(
I hate how they say it's the life style that killed him, rather than just all the drugs in his system.
johnnox - June 4, 2008 10:52 AM (GMT)
He will now always be remembered by the way he died by people who didn;t know him personally.
Its his folks I feel sorry for - but blimey, he was very creative in his love life wasn;t he?
Stu - get the scaffolding on order, I'll buy the cling film.

johnnox - June 4, 2008 10:59 AM (GMT)
July 6, 2004, luv. Since then it's all about the slings, hammocks and drugs.
Riverwide - June 4, 2008 11:01 AM (GMT)

Normal, not normal.... vanilla, kinks.... whatever labels are put on it, human beings have increasingly felt the need to fulfill their psycho-sexual fantasies, largely as consequence of our increasingly forced, squeezed and strained existences
johnnox - June 4, 2008 11:11 AM (GMT)
I think I must be very very dull.
bulletproof_heart - June 4, 2008 11:12 AM (GMT)
BUt that's just another label.... it's not that you and I are dull, it's just not what we feel we need to do
johnnox - June 4, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
I'm going to homebase today to buy a ladder, a fireplace, a lawnmower and some nails. Stu is in for the sex of his life tonight.

Speaking personally, I can't be doing with kinky stuff really. I recently became entangled with a Russian guy who wanted me to choke him as we were having sex. Whatever floats your boat I guess, but personally I just find stuff like that a huuuge turn off.
