Title: Kitsune or Fox
Super Sonic - September 19, 2008 05:36 PM (GMT)
About Tails, some say he's a fox but technically, he's a Kitsune... I think that's what I wanted to say... Yup that's it.
Iceguy - September 19, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
Kitsune = Japanese for "fox".
There, mystery solved without Horatio or Scooby Doo!
Super Sonic - September 19, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
But I thought a Kitsune is a fox with multiple tails! D=

It was also mythed that they could have up to nine tails(Hence NineTails the pokemon) And they can also grow tails at will, and generate tails when they wish...
Thierry"TrueAim"Prower - September 19, 2008 08:46 PM (GMT)
ah myths...
but yea I think that's also a bit like how they invented the nine tailed demon fox of Naruto.
Any way... Kitsune = a Japanese legend of a Fox which had 1 or more tails. end of story or do I need to say: Question solved?
I think Japanese or Asian people will rather refer Tails to a Kitsune, then us American and European folks calling him a two tailed-Fox.
Hiroko Kitsune - September 19, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
Kitsune=Fox
Harinezumi= Hedgehog

I thought a kitsune was a fox spirt that could change appearance between human and fox(if tails is modeled after a kitsune he could just count easily as hal human bein anthro like he is) (usually female) and the amount of tails it had reflected along the lines of how powerful they were in fact have a ghost story book with one form asia about a kitsune
9 being the most powerful
and in AoSTH in the sonic says about computers theres a pic of tails on the screen and it says mobious two tailed fox so in the STH universe could two tailed fox just be a separate race of fox?
(ex. arctic fox, red fox)
as for legend a two tailed fox would not be impossible if an animal can be born with two heads due to a mutation than having a extra of something unimportant like a tail could be completely possible
I just realized I know more useless info than a encyclopedia i;ve edited this thing twice to add more :TailsHeadSpin:
Striker Nexus - September 20, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
Kitsune - Fox in the Japanese language.
Kyuubi - Nine tailed fox in the japanese language.
Kokoro~ - September 20, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
It's true. Although we already had a definition for Kitsune.
"Bi": I'm not certaine, I'm fairly sure it means "tailed beast" though...
So, it's actually not necessarily "nine-tailed fox" since(not sure) Kyuu is "nine" Because kyuubi actually means "Nine-Tailed Beast"

| QUOTE |
Wikipedia Physically, kitsune are noted for having as many as nine tails.[12] Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful fox; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 1,000 years.[13] One, five, seven, and nine tails are the most common numbers in folk stories.[14] When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold.[12] These kyūbi no kitsune (九尾の狐, kyūbi no kitsune? nine-tailed foxes) gain the abilities to see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world. Other tales attribute them infinite wisdom (omniscience).[15] |
basically everything I just said is up there
kyūbi no kitsune
so it would still a kitsune thats just the name of its new form once it gains its ninth and final tail like "super" form for sonic or 'hyper" form for shadow their still shadow and sonic but those the names of their ultimate forms
Kokoro~ - September 21, 2008 02:37 AM (GMT)
But still in saying that, a kitsune is still nothing more than a multi-tailed fox. Seeing as it has to obtain it's ninth tailed to be called kyūbi(or Kyuubi) no kitsune. :/

wikipedia Kitsune are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. They are a type of yōkai, or spiritual entity, and the word kitsune is often translated as fox spirit. However, this does not mean that kitsune are ghosts, nor that they are fundamentally different from regular foxes. Because the word spirit is used to reflect a state of knowledge or enlightenment, all long-lived foxes gain supernatural abilities |
so even thou there not ghost/spirts their still a spiritual entity rather then a regular fox so the use of the word is just used differently in some cases just like a komodo dragon isn't really a dragon but is still called that along with other reptiles we call a type of dragon ex. frilled dragon
Tsurara - September 21, 2008 03:02 PM (GMT)
I believe it can mean that legendary beast thing, but at least in that Japanese version of Full Metal Alchemist, I remember the characters clearly calling foxes kitsunes. So, kitsunes are just foxes or characters that have something to do with foxes for me :p
Kokoro~ - September 21, 2008 05:10 PM (GMT)
But still, "kyūbi" is more of a title than an actual thing. O.o
Super Sonic - September 21, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Kyuubi would mean Nine tailed beast...
Then Nibi would then mean two tailed beast!
I'm sorry if I'm wrong. ^^;

wikipedia.. again kitsune is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; kitsune usually refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives. |
it also says 1 5 7 and 9 are the commonly used amounts of tails

even more wikipedia Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful fox; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 1,000 years |
so the fact that he's 8 and has two tails already make it very unlikly that hes a kitsune so two tailed fox is probably just a species in the STH universe

that was the closest of what I skimmed through
Kokoro~ - September 23, 2008 07:25 AM (GMT)
Nibi might be refered to as a two-tailed demon cat, [Sorta Naruto Spoiler]because it is refered to be one in Naruto, and also I think it was in some old Japanese folk legend...
Anyway, they all would be in order:
(I forgot one tail)
Nibi
Sanbi
Yonbi
Godbi
Rokubi(I think)
Seven I'm not sure of.
Eight, I forgot, but is an eight-tailed Ox of some sort.
And Kyuubi.
I highly doubt it ever went any higher than nine....

exactly with mean even know you could be describing a kitsune the word isn't for kitsune specificity its for any two tailed beast:)
I've seen a couple Naruto, not bad:)
Kokoro~ - September 24, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
Uhm O.o I didn't understand what you meant exactly...
Super Sonic - September 24, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
He/She mean's it's not just the word for kitsune. It can be any 2 tailed beast.
(Am I following you right?)

yep and it would be he:)
I have no idea what makes people unsure what pronoun to use
Sunshine the fox - September 25, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
Its the same thing, but when I was younger I thought it was a fox with two Tails also!
Kokoro~ - September 25, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
I think that you misunderstood what I meant... Or vise versa O.o;;
Super Sonic - September 25, 2008 03:31 PM (GMT)
Well it's a nice conversation going on here. =D
What I think Tails is a Kitsune to me. A cute and anime one. ^^
What if there was one higher than 9?
10: Zyuubi
100: Hyakubi
1000: Senbi
10,000: Manbi
100,000,000: Okubi (a 100,000,000 tailed beast. OMG... O_o)
100,000,000,000: Tyobi (that's even worse...)
And one tailed is Itibi and seven is Sitibi or Nanabi and eight is Hatibi.
I should go learn japanese. xD
100,000,000,000 tailed beast is even worse than the 100,000,000 tailed beast. o_O O_o
Kokoro~ - September 25, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
Surely no beast can maintain that many tails, and the size of the beast itself would be absurdity. Not even in a myth is that possible...
Super Sonic - September 25, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
I know but what IF there was one?
Kokoro~ - September 25, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
It would be larger than a continent...
Super Sonic - September 25, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
which continent do think exactly?
Maz - September 25, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
If there was an animal with that many tails, it wouldn't be an animal, it would be a pile of tails with the body of an animal attatched =|
Tails is a fox. I've never heard any official statement in game manuals or otherwise that he's anything else.
Super Sonic - September 25, 2008 06:27 PM (GMT)
To me he looks more of a Kitsune... but yeah that's your opinion of tails as a fox.
I have another question. How is Tails be able to turn his tails in one direction while he is flying? I mean how can you turn your tails around. Robots can do that cause they are functioned to do that.
Kokoro~ - September 25, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
I don't even know what Tails looks like anymore >.<
Also, it would be Asia.

Caspa - September 26, 2008 02:23 AM (GMT)
But still, It is confusing how he flies without them stopping, Passes my logic, Helicopters can fly like that because their rotors are both one stick-if you think about it-connected to another stick which makes them spin. How Tails' flies is past any logical answer I know.
