Title: How can Sonic breathe in space?!

Tailsisreal - October 13, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
OK, I really don't get this one. How come Sonic and all the other Mobian characters can breathe and survive normally in outer space with no air?!

My theory is that having Sonic wearing a space suit is just too cumbersome and would look bad, so Sega gives him and his buddies the miracle of being immune to the empty vacuum of space instead.

In Sonic X I think there is a dome over the ship that's how they can breath in space. (I think there was one episode were it broke and Cosmo almost got sucked in but Tails saved her.)

True, the Blue Typhoon has a huge cockpit window, but that's just for protection and to keep the air inside the ship.

What I'm talking about is the almost infinite number of times you see Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and occasionally Cosmo, Rouge, Tails, Amy, Cream, and the Chaotix walking around outside their ship without any kind of space suit on, and they still don't suffocate! Why?!

And while I'm at it, how can they even talk or make noise in outer space anyways?! Plus, what's up with the explosions when they destroy other Metarex spaceships?! You can't have fireballs in space 'cause there's no air to burn!!

I'm so confused... :TailsHeadSpin:

It's not a very big deal. It wouldn't suprise me if he could though, he's a super fast talking hedgehog for pete's sake.

Haha, exactly.
It's just a fictional character - it doesn't have to make complete sense xP

Explosions in space are perfectly possible. The oxygen used for combustion is taken from WITHIN the spaceship, since it's probably got air within.

This is a good topic. Most Sonic games end with Sonic in space. But NEVER with a space suit.

Now, what I didn't understand were stages like: "Final Rush, Final Chase, and Mad Space"

Mad Space especially, now Rouge WAS NOT! wearing a Space Suit at all, yet she could breathe perfectly. And she was nowhere near the Ark(I think)

Now, the reason I brought up the Ark was for my next thought.

Final Rush, and Final Chase were relatively close to the Ark. I think for Sonic and Shadow to breathe, there might be an artificial barrier of some sort(maybe something like an atmosphere) that could keep oxygen from the Ark inside of those set parameters, and Final Chase, and Final Rush may have been within that area. Just a thought, though...

Very true, except for the fact that the tiny Metarex ships and a lot of missles and other automated (non-piloted) objects also explode in the show. If no one is inside them that needs air to breathe, why would they contain enough air for an explosion anyhow? As a matter of fact, it would make more sense that these completely robotic enemies DON'T have a pressurized atmosphere in them because it would be unneccessary and over-complicate things.

Also, any ship that did go into a fireball from it's own internal oxygen igniting would only be a very quick flash at the most before the fire consumed the entire supply. You'd never get multiple explosions or long lasting, super bright flares like are shown sometimes in Sonic X season 3.

I just noticed too that a lot of final boss fights from Sonic games that take place in space seem to have Sonic in his super form. I can understand why Super Sonic could be immune to the vacuum of space using some unexplained power, but it doesn't help explain how there are multiple scenes where normal, everyday Sonic is in space for hours and comes back just fine.

Now, I'm not sure about Space Colony Ark having its own small atmosphere, but I know the Blue Typhoon doesn't because I've seen Chris helping Tails work on the flight deck in one episode in the middle of galactic nowhere. Chris was in a space suit, but Tails was not. So, obviously Chris needed the space suit because there was no air, but why didn't Tails need one, too?

Sorry, I'm a long poster! ;D

I read some where that the Ark did have some kinda barrier around it. That's how they could breathe in SA2B.

I just thought of some thing... May be the atmosphere on Mobius is different then the atmosphere is on Earth. So may be that's how they can breath in space. Because they might not even use Oxygen to breath. Or may be they can adapt easy.

Tailsisreal - October 14, 2008 05:07 AM (GMT)
If the atmosphere on Mobius was different from Earth, Chris would need to wear a space suit on their planet as well, or he would die just like in space. On second thought, take off the space suit, Chris! (LOL, Sorry, Chris replaced Tails as Sonic's buddy and that got me mad.)

As for adapting, that gave me a great idea! You know how humans only need to breathe because we need oxygen to undergo respiration to allow our bodies to make the energy we need to survive? Maybe Mobians have a totally different biochemistry in which they don't need air in order for their bodies to function normally! It's kind of like how humans can do the same thing (produce the energy our body needs without oxygen) in the process called fermentation, except Mobians don't produce toxic byproducts or get fatigued from it like we do.

Of course, if that's true, then technically Sonic should never have to worry about breathing underwater because he simply wouldn't need to like in space. Drat! That ten second countdown and mad scramble for an air bubble comes back to haunt me again! Make it stooooopp...!

Wha...? Hedgehogs cant breathe in space?? :)

Iceguy - October 14, 2008 05:31 PM (GMT)
Maybe Mobians can breathe in space? ^^;

Tailsisreal - October 14, 2008 06:16 PM (GMT)
That's just the problem! In space there is nothing to breathe! :P

But, then again - it's FICTION, so it doesn't really matter, right?

Iceguy - October 14, 2008 07:28 PM (GMT)
True, dammit. XP

THERE MUST BE SOME LOGICAL EXPLANATION TO IT. @@

Wait, they might have some gadget-thingy in their lungs that allows them to breath! I think Tails is smart enough to make something like that! =D
(And he forgot about Chris because nobody cares about Chris. *shot*)

NOOOOO!!! Who shot Iceguy?! You can't shoot someone for telling the truth! :shot:

I still think that maybe, for some reason, Mobians don't need to breathe at all in space, but they do underwater for some other reason.

Wait, how am I still talking? I thought I was... :shot again: Urk! OK, that one got me... X0
