Title: Chaos Emeralds
Description: Energizer bunny in crystal form?

OK, this one I seriously don't know about at all. What's the deal behind the Chaos Emeralds? I mean where did they come from originally and how do they get their immense power? Not to mention, how does the power in them recharge so quickly?! I'll let someone else lead off with their theory first. ^_^
Kotetsu - October 15, 2008 11:54 AM (GMT)
They're not a power store, they're obviously a source of infinite power...
Dunno where they came from, though.
Iceguy - October 15, 2008 05:50 PM (GMT)
The Chaos Emeralds are seven emeralds with mystical powers of unknown origin.
As theyīre mystical, we might not know where do the Emeralds get their power. =3

Well, we can know a couple things about the Chaos Emeralds for certain.
1. They are not infinite in power. Several times over in games and cartoons alike Sonic and more often a really powerful enemy will drain all the power from the emeralds, and they just become pale-colored rocks. Of course, they always recharge as well afterwards, though no one knows how.
2. They share a really close bond to the Master Emerald. Tikal's saying which Knuckles memorized mentions that, "The Servers are the seven Chaos." when refering to the Master Emerald. Not sure how this helps, though, because even less is understood about the Master Emerald than the Chaos Emeralds.
3. They have a positive and negative energy force. In SA1, Perfect Chaos drains all the negative energy from the chaos emeralds, but Sonic still manages to use them to go super by using only the positive energy left in the emeralds. Also, the hoards of fake chaos emeralds in Sonic X are explained as possessing only the negative energy of a real chaos emerald, which is why they are destructible and less powerful than actual chaos emeralds and might explain why they can't recharge their energy once it's used up as well.
4. Positive wishing, hopes, and support from others can recharge a depleted chaos emerald very quickly. Once again, straight off of SA1 and Sonic X. Also, Knuckles' chant even includes that, "Our hearts intensify their power."
This all makes me wonder that if the chaos emeralds can be recharged and even intensified by living things, does that mean some of their power comes from the person who holds it? Also, what about their relationship to the Master Emerald? The Master Emerald has the power to control the Chaos Emeralds we know, but how do the chaos emeralds 'serve' the Master Emerald?
Sorry, once again a super-long post! ;D

Wait, to your "#1"
What about in Sonic adventure, they didn't "recharge" persay, Sonic turned Super with them, while they were that pale grey color.
Tailsisreal - October 16, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
True, in SA1 Sonic went super when the emeralds were still depleted, but there was loud cheering in the background just like when the emeralds were recharged in the Sonic X battle against Perfect Chaos that was based off the game. I guess I inferred that the cheering crowd was the reason Sonic was able to go super in the game as well, even though it never really showed the emeralds recharging, per-say. Good point, though.
~*Peppermint Girl*~ - October 16, 2008 01:41 AM (GMT)
But... if they emeralds had "no power" would Sonic be able to go Super to any cheering crowd?
Trixie Prower - October 18, 2008 10:26 PM (GMT)
I believe Sonic X put it best "The chaos emeralds take what is in our hearts and turn it into power."
the goodness or the blackness of your heart is what the emeralds use as energy, they can be drained but when held by somebody else, the power can be restored.
That's how I think Sonic became Super Sonic on DX, the emeralds made his good spirit into power and recharged it.
however after next gen, Silver so bluntly put." The chaos emeralds turn your thought into power."
Which I think means, not what he said literally, but he's basically saying the emeralds can be powered to do anything you can imagine, in that case revive Sonic.
Nobody knows where they came from though.
Some people say aliens but i doubt it. xD

I guess that would be the best explaination of any in this topic.
Scitt Emerald - October 19, 2008 03:52 AM (GMT)
I think the reason why SEGA made the Chaos Emeralds is to have something like Mario's Power Star. IDK, but it is very ironic
(PM me if you want any other similarities I found between Sonic and the Mario games!)
Tailsisreal - October 20, 2008 10:47 PM (GMT)
Oh, yeah, totally! Every game ever created in some other universe has an item(s) that are the source of some mystical power or something of the sort. Chaos Emeralds, Power Stars, the Triforce, the Star Rod, Time Gears, the Force, Lehran's Medallion, the One Ring, Digivices, and the list goes on and on and on! (Kudos to the first person to PM me with all the games these items belong to! ;D )
Anyways, even though very few of these kinds of items are ever fully explained to us, I like making theories on how they might work just for the fun of it. Such as the chaos emeralds which, I believe, convert an ambient, untapped life-force into a powerful form of energy that can then be harnessed in a great number of ways.
This would explain how Sonic and others can use the emeralds' energy to go super. Since the power in the emeralds is a form of passively gathered life-force, it can be readily transferred to one particular lifeform in just the reverse of how they gather their power normally.
This may also explain how they can be quickly 'recharged' by high sprited friends and onlookers. These people are simply lending the emeralds more of their own life-force voluntarily but without understanding what they are doing at the time. With a large crowd, it wouldn't harm anyone to partcipate in such a drain of their own power since the burden of energy needed per person would be very light as it is divided amongst the entire group.
The Master Emerald could be the same way, except it serves a higher purpose to actually keep the life-force of Mobius, or maybe the entire universe, in balance. The chaos emeralds are supposed to assist in this goal by the Master Emerald's control over them and their power.
So, yeah, there's my totally unofficial theory! Any questions? :TailsHeadSpin:

Okay with the whole Sonic Adventure thing ((FYI Adventure DX Is the gamecube version of Adventure so why not just say, Adventure)).
Perfect Chaos took the emeralds and yes...they turned gray. But Tails said that Chaos Used only the negative energy of the emeralds and Sonic can harness their real power.
If you ask me, the emeralds have negative and positive energy or something like that.

In my opinion, I think the echidna's made them. I think someone in the Sonic said, "We've been guarding the master emerald for generations" or something. I dunno. DX
Tailsisreal - October 22, 2008 12:03 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah, the echidnas have guarded the Master Emerald for time immemorial. However, it was Knuckles' descendants who tried to abuse and control the power instead of guarding it that ended up leaving Knuckles the only echidna left after the horrible incident with Chaos destroying them all. (Although, that isn't entirely true now, thanks to Sonic Chronicles! ;)
However, it is never even once inferred that the echidnas created them. As a matter of fact, it should be seen as highly unlikely because they didn't even know the true power of the Master Emerald and the chaos emeralds when they tried to take them for their own uses. No, the origin of the Master and Chaos emeralds must stem from something having to do with Chaos itself which resides in the Master Emerald, and Chaos's strange and unexplained role as the protector of the Chao.
Wait a minute! Could the Chao have created the emeralds? Come to think of it, the Chao are just as mysterious and unexplained as the emeralds themselves! They must have some relation, especially since 'Chaos' as in the emeralds and 'Chao' as in the creatures are only one letter off from one another. I think I'm on to something here... :TailsSuperJump:

Theory =
They are the God Particles of the Sonic Universe (Do not hence the name, religion not here), which because of a discharge have such a immense amount of energy that could destroy the fabric of space and time itself, sucking in the whole universe if the energy ever to be released.
Creation = long ago, when the Master Emerald was the size of a Meteor, shattered into pieces, yet leaving a bigger form than the remnants, the remnants are the Chaos, Soul, and Super Emeralds.
Recharge = Since they can access the power of all energy in the universe, they create a discharge immense, yet undetectale by Sentient beings, which when hits a source of energy, duplicates the power and redirects it to te Emerald, If an Emerald gets a Positive Charge, it recharges, if it receives a Negative charge, then the emerald caves in and the energy is released in a blast of electricity, crippling anything electronic near it.
sonic-GT - October 31, 2008 03:55 AM (GMT)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Master Emerald that has infinite power? Or is it just there to keep the emeralds under control? I believe it's both, I doubt the emeralds have infinate power, if they did they wouldn't have control from the M.E.
Tailsisreal - November 3, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
Actually, according to the events of the second or third to last episode of Sonic X, even the Master Emerald doesn't have infinite power, remember? They used up all the ME's power to blast the three-headed dragon-Metarex-thingy and the Master Emerald shattered as a result. So, clearly neither of the types of emeralds are omnipowerful or infinite.
I am curious, though, has anyone given any thought to my chao theory of the emeralds' origins that I posted earlier? It really does seem to make sense, and I'd like to pursue it a bit further if possible.

The Echidna Tribe knew about the Emeralds for many many generations (i.e. Tikalīs grandmother). Chaos is rumoured to be a mutated Chao that came in contact with the seven Chaos Emeralds, unnamed at that time. Chaos, knowing that heīs powerful, he wanted to protect his fellow Chao. After the Pachacamac and the Echidna Tribe tried to abuse the emeralds to gain total power, hurting Tikal (she was Chaosīs friend for a long time) and Chaosīs Chao it protected so much in the process, Chaos got mad and wiped out almost the entire tribe. Tikal sealed Chaos into the Master Emerald and at that point, she named the other even emeralds Chaos Emeralds, because Chaos used them to kill the echidnas. And the Master Emerald is called like that because it controls the Chaos Emeralds (itīs their master).
Chao are just little peaceful creatures, and have absolutely no relationship to the emeralds, besides Chaos. And as far as I know - arenīt gems created mostly in volcanic processes? =P
Tailsisreal - November 3, 2008 06:57 PM (GMT)
Wow. Now all those crazy flashbacks in SA1 make a whole lot more sense! I totally understand what you said here, and it really makes a lot of sense. I'd never thought of Chaos as once being a chao before, but it fits well. Your explanation sounds pretty authentic, actually. Is it the official canon from somewhere?
Anyways, yeah, superhard gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, diamonds, and emeralds are always formed in the extreme heat and pressure of volcanic cavities in the Earth's crust. However, they never come out or are found as already cut and faceted like the Master and Chaos Emeralds are. This means that someone, undoubtedly even before the Knuckles clan led by Pachacamac or his ancestors found them, had discovered and refined the gems and may have even possibly given them their distinct powers. I only suspected the chao because they are the only race that seems to be hinted at to be as ageless as this ancient past when the emeralds were first created as we know them today. Who knows? Maybe the chao used to be a super-powerful and intelligent race capable of empowering the emeralds before some great tradgety forced them into their current role as cute little pets? ^_^
(Actually, that might make for an interesting little story someday! I've got to hold on to this one... ;D )

Chaos being a Chao is official - itīs even on Wikipedia.
I guess youīre right. Somebody had to create them, or at least shape them. O.o;
