Yeah, yeah. We get it, Sega. "Miles per hour." It wasn't even funny the first time. If you're playing a game with Tails in it, your patience is probably already near the breaking point; just when you think there couldn't be another reason to despise this tagalong loser, you remember his full name. Core meltdown in 5...4...3...

Any thoughts on this?

Missy - November 26, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a huge critic =/

Groshonee - November 27, 2008 01:31 AM (GMT)
I admit his english VAs are incredibly annoying.

Lisa Fox - November 27, 2008 01:36 AM (GMT)
Ah, I got this issue in the mail. lol

I have to admit, his name is a huge pun, but that's no reason to pick on him.

And the "tagalong loser" part angers me. D|

Cherry Blossom - November 27, 2008 03:34 AM (GMT)
I had to agree with GameInformer on this one, except the "tagalong loser" part.I guess that's what Sega gets for naming him that. xD

Thierry"TrueAim"Prower - November 27, 2008 06:40 AM (GMT)
This ticks me off...

and especially how they talk about it, as if he is like a disease whom you can't forget. I mean really, why do they care if his name is a huge Pun on Miles per Hour. I mean come on... everyone can see that.
No need to put that into a magazine to give Tails an even worse name.

And come on the writer on this must be a real dimwit...

It's wasn't meant to be funny in the first place. Just a little creator's thing, they used to name him Miles Prower any ways but another creator sneaked the name Tails in it (or the other way around) making it Miles "Tails" Prower. He needs to check the sources of his info some time. Or at least write it in a different way to show that you know what you are talking about, perhaps if he/ she knew what the story behind his name was then this wouldn't be written. BLAME SEGA! Not Miles Tails Prower

Seriously this is been written by someone who has a grudge against these characters, the way he wrote about Tails gives it away. And talking about him as a 'Tagalong loser' means the writer will get a lot of fans on him/ her who disagree what has been written.

No really, stop picking on Tails for god sake, HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE GAME! Silver for instance (sorry fan boys and girls) is a copy that could be called a tagalong but still not a loser.

Cute lil Fox - November 27, 2008 09:58 AM (GMT)
Ahm.

Sonic. He's a fast Hedgehog, so his name is Sonic, as in like a Sonic boom or somthing. Then their's Super Sonic, a take off of Super Sonic waves. Then Hyper Sonic, Hyper Sonic waves. Then Ultra Sonic...I don't even have to say it a third time.

Silver, he's white silverish...he's silver.

Shadow, he's dark, kind of a shadow of Sonic...sort of.

Princess Sally Acorn. Sally means, literally, "Princess." So she is Princess Princess Acorn.

Rotor the walrus. Rotor, a swing at the fact he's a technitian.

Bunny Rabot. Bunny, cause she's a bunny, and rabbot, she's a rabbit that's part robot.

Knuckles...need I say more.

So...why oh why, my dear cretic...do you pick on one characters name...maybe the most creative out of all of them...when it's obviously not meant to be funny, but a shakespearean theme of naming a character to sound like their character. It's creativity, it's a theme, it's a trend which brings the cartoony characters out more. So my critic, I ask you...did you actualy try to use your imagination and ask yourself WHY they did it? Or are you basing it off of your own opinion alone? Maybe you just don't like Sonic in general? If so, I would suggest picking on a more unclever name that Tails', like maybe Robotnik, or even Sonic himself. But no, maybe you fear offending the Sonic fans? If you fear that, then don't pick on any Sonic character at all.

Meh, I've patterned my character name creating techneques on Sega's cause I actualy like the technique. I think it's best if we just ignore this pointless review...but that's just me.

pokeplayer984 - November 27, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
Oh! There's seriously going to be hate mail about this!

See, this is why I enjoy the lists ScrewAttack.com make. They are not from just one individual, but a whole group of people, ones that sometimes have difficulty agreeing on if something belongs on the list or not. (One of the latest, Top 10 BEST Video Game Themes EVER!, was so tough for them to agree on that a fight broke out over it.) They are people who know what they're doing when it comes to making a list.

This sounds like it's coming from an individual perspective, one that hates Tails with a passion. In my perspective, if I had to choose which Sonic character's name is designed the worst, I'd go with Silver. Seriously, a silver colored hedgehog named Silver? How uncreative is that? I don't hate the character himself by any means, I just find his name quite uncreative.

GameInformer, do yourself a favor, fire the hater and remake the list. Tails is one character that doesn't deserve to be on the list and you know it! Remake the list or the hate mail won't stop. Oh, and the last comment isn't coming from an individual perspective. It's a real deal fact. Tails is some who is loved, not hated, and YOU need to understand that.

Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to spread the word on this at the ScrewAttack Forums. Thank you, and good day.

Tak - November 27, 2008 05:13 PM (GMT)
I just read this issue of GI today.
I hafta' say that pretty much all of the characters have bad/unoriginal names, not just him. He's named after a trait he has just like most of the other characters. I don't get why they have to pick on him specifically. =P

Welcome to the world of Manga ^_^ .

The Japanese way of drawing comics and characters.

Oh and I did to with my characters Moonay (draws strength from the moon), Mirro (he reflects the personality of the one he speaks to like talking in a mirror) and Galeic (Gale= wind and he runs as fast as it). So don't worry if you did.
----

So yea... some people don't know what they are calling towards them by picking on character names just because they are Pun's. LEARN JAPANESE DRAWING...
It says clearly in the book I got here, about Japanese Drawing ways called Manga, that it is better to let the character have a name that symbolizes it's abilities making it easier to recall the character's name or ability.

Sorry if this sounded a little to peppered but I am easily ticked off if someone blames SEGA for the name or anything about the characters except for 1 thing: the on going list of quick new character adds. Anything else ticks me off (Especially if they pick on the main characters.)

One: It wasn´t supposted to be funny in the first place. =P
Two: Tails is slow? Since when? O.o
Three: Why would I hate Tails? He´s a cool character with a unique personality and stuff. =3
Four: OH EMM GEE WUT A HORIBL NAYM. :| [/srsbsns]
Five: Yeah, melt if you want, nobody cares. =P

EDIT: COPYRIGHT INFRIGMENT! THEY STOLE THAT Miles "Tails" Prower™ PIC FROM Shadow the Hedgehog™ (game)!

ANOTHER EDIT: It was Sonic Team who created Tails. Sure, they´re a part of Sega etc; but it´s still a difference.

H.Ashes - November 28, 2008 03:19 AM (GMT)
I'll to see this what I always say to any TV show, magazine, or person who rambles on pointlessly about a specific thing.

"I'm sorry, what? I wasn't paying attention. I can't understand BAW BAW BAW anyway."

Merc - November 28, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
I think his name more a huge, mocking pun rather something creative, I like the name, but ST was probably being a stuck up **** when making him, while I do not agree with "Tagalong loser", I do admit that Sega's ****tiness has gotten him half the name.

In the end, I blame Sonic Team and their stupidity. >_>

H.Ashes - November 28, 2008 05:46 PM (GMT)
But seriously though, does a name REALLY deprive a character of unique qualities? Proven by Tails, I think not.

Kilo - November 29, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
I'm hardly surprised, this is GI were talking about here. Their very untrustable with bent reviews, sometimes spewing BS rumors, and crap like this. I don't see what's so wrong with him at all. Yea, his name is unoriginal but there's PLENTY of unoriginal names out there in the gaming world as well. Its just a name, nothing to hate the character for. Also, the original creator of the character just wanted him to be Miles Prower, or just Miles (thus why if you go into the debug mode of Sonic 2, it will show Miles instead of Tails), and it was the rest of Sonic Team who decided to call him Tails, so they settled on Miles "Tails" Prower.

Oh well, gaming magazines like GI are definitely a dying breed thanks to the internet. So at this point, all they can do is blow hot air.

Erikku - November 29, 2008 07:40 PM (GMT)
I have yet to see any game media who clearly likes Tails, everyone from XPlay to Electronic Gaming Monthly likes to pick on the little guy.

Kilo - November 29, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
Yea, I guess he seems to be an easy target :(. But X-Play did make a positive comment on him before, but that's just amist a sea of tons of hatred comments (then again, they hate many games, including the FF series).

I'm guessing it plays with the more modern games >_<.

I hope no one's seriously upset about what a magazine has to say about a character who doesn't exist. I can understand being mild annoyed for about a minute, but actually taking the time to write hate mail, for example?

I mean, his name is kind of stupid.

=P

~*Minty*~ - November 30, 2008 01:13 PM (GMT)
I hereby banish Gameinformer from my life.

I'm not in any way upset, I just find it stupid that their bashing him for no reason what-so-ever ^^;,. Makes sense because it what GI is, a notoriously biased magazine with sewed reviews and whatnot. I would take anything they say with a grain of salt.

And as I said, gaming is full of unoriginal names. Good example: Megaman ^^;. Doesn't mean their bad at all ^^;

Thierry"TrueAim"Prower - November 30, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
Yea, think about it.

There are already so many used names that you have no choice but to stick with one that sounds a little stupid but still fits the character. That's the world of a name giver these days, many names are already being used.

This just came to mind in something completely off sonic or platform games. Even in RTS games it comes back: in Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour you got this GLA TOXIN general named: THRAX
used poison? anTHRAX.
See, it's just so you know what he uses.

I'd just want to have a character's name symbolize what it's abilities are instead of having a cool name of whom hell knows what it's abilities are.

It's against the rules. If you actually read them you'd know, and Trixie doesn't want any of it in here.

Sorry to cause a fuss, I want everything to be controlled here =3

~*Minty*~ - December 1, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
Really, Missy? I thought it was okay to a certain extent, and only if the words were completely censored out. I need to read the rules again. O.o

Missy - December 1, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
No, I think Trixie just made them or they were put in when this place first started. The censors don't cover you.

She pointed it out in the "What really annoys you?" topic so I want to be a good mod and follow the rules ^^

~*Minty*~ - December 2, 2008 11:10 AM (GMT)
Oh, I completely forgot about that. ^^; Sorry for any hassle, I may have given you over that.

Tailsisreal - December 4, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I heard about this article from a friend of mine yesterday. Quite frankly, I consider GameInformer along with almost all other video game mags to be comparable to the National Inquirer in credibility. If one idiot decides to write a purposefully scalding review of my favorite character ever, he can just go on ahead and do it. After all, he's the one who is missing out on one of the best characters ever created, not me. :T12:

RikuZegram - December 4, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)
Look, it was one guy's opinion. He said it in a very unprofessional and uncalled for way, and in all honesty, he didnt really single Tails out. There were a list of 10 other terrible names. The journalist obviously must not be too fantastic if his contribution to the magazine was a useless list...but you do have to admit that the name isnt THAT great...:)

Tailsisreal - December 4, 2008 09:37 PM (GMT)
It may be a horrible pun, but, personally, I don't think that it makes it a bad name. I mean, in a lot of cartoons Tails is depicted as hating his name because of it being an obvious pun and choosing to use his nickname 'Tails' instead of 'Miles Prower', so those kind of show how the creators have even admitted for the crime of naming him that way to begin with. Personally, I think having a name that's a pun would be cool, as long as it wasn't a derogatory one. (My dad once knew a guy named Harry Pitts. Now THAT in my book is just plain cruel parents!)

Ultimately, my opinion is that Tails shouldn't have even been on that list, although I can easily understand why some would assert that he belongs there. I'm just shocked that the editors or whoever at GameInformer would allow such provokative and inflammatory writting to make it to the final print! Whoever wrote that column undoubtedly had to get it approved by at least one more person, you know.

Cute lil Fox - December 5, 2008 04:11 AM (GMT)
They probibly just thought it was funny. That's how most offensive things get passed off, as "funny."

RikuZegram - December 6, 2008 06:35 PM (GMT)
Well, that is what most comedy is. I mean, watch one stand-up routine on Comedy Central and I can guarantee someone was going to get offended. Its just unfortunate that he picked Tails.
