Title: Spriting Tricks
Description: This is totally worth it.

Immortal Cookie - July 11, 2006 01:20 AM (GMT)
I have some spriting tricks you can do. I did not make these tricks up, "Sunny" from The Lloyd owns Fayt Forums made these up, so I am giving credit to her.

Anyways, my favorite trick and the one that will probably be most used. Are you spriters out there getting SICK of taking an hour or more trying to recolor a sprite sheet? I am too, but now, after reading this whole thing, you can do everything in LESS TIME. I am now going to copy and paste the code that Sunny from the other forum has made, everything that was in there, onto here. Now, notice that the examples and stuff are from Tales of Symphonia, like those Colette sprites that are going to be used in the examples, so don't be surprised if you don't see any examples involving Sonic and Co.

** Tricks & Tips List
- Mass Recolor Trick
- Afterimage
- Blurring Speed Effect

Mass Recolor Trick
Ok, here's how it goes.

See this toolbar? You should have it in PAINT! Okay, see the tool highlighted in yellow? That is called SELECT! Select SELECT! There should be two choices at the bottom of your toolbar!

And it should look like this! Select the bottom image.

All right, here's where it really begins. See this image?

Suppose you want to recolor Colette's hair green, but you don't want to recolor it by zooming in and doing it by hand. Well, then try this.

See this box? It's your color box. The one on the top is your primary color, the box on the bottom is your secondary color! Now to recolor Colette's hair green! All right for the PRIMARY COLOR: Select the dark green color. For the SECONDARY COLOR: Select Colette's darkest hair color by PICK COLOR tool. Zoom in on Colette and look for her darkest hair color! REMEMBER these two things CLOSELY!

PRIMARY COLOR: The color you WANT
SECONDARY COLOR: The color you WANT TO CHANGE!

Okay, here's what to do. Using the PRIMARY COLOR, make a box big enough to fit the Colette sprites you want to recolor. Like this:

See? Nice big green box. Okay, now what you do is fit Colette inside by using the SELECT tool! Make sure that you have selected the SECOND option! Now box Colette and drag her to the green box you just made! Like so:

If you have done this correctly, Colette's darkest hair color should have changed. See? Zoom in and check! Now it's not quite over yet folks. Select Colette's 2nd Darkest hair color, as your SECONDARY COLOR! Now change your PRIMARY COLOR into a lighter green, but make sure it's dark and it still fits the colors! Use the PRIMARY COLOR and make ANOTHER BOX of green. Now COPY the Colette box you edited and paste it in the green box that you just made! If your colors are correct, Colette's hair should change yet again! D: Now keep doing this, going to a lighter color as you go up while changing your primary color as well. Eventually, you should get this:

See? Colette's hair color is all recolored the way you want it! And without having to painfully zoom in and recoloring it by hand! Eh? What's that? The color of her Chakrams changed too? Oh, it looks like her hair color is the same as the Chakram. In cases like these you get the original Colette sprite again and copy the lower part of her body. Like this:

Now copy/cut and paste it onto your recolored Colette's sprites. Make sure you zoom in and such so that you can place it accurately. And now you should have this:
user posted image

See? A completely recolored Colette without using a painful method! It may be a complicated, if not, sophisticated method, but if you learn learn how to do it you can mass recolor things easily like:

- Changing Cless' Eternal Sword into the color of Lloyd's Eternal Sword
- Change the color of Yggdrasill's hair into blue
- Change the color of Dhao's costume into white

And all those other things that were so much of a bother! Eh? What's that? "What if you want to recolor something but something else you DON'T want to recolor is the same color of the one you want to recolor like what happened to Colette and her Chakram?". Well, either try the COPY + PASTE trick or too bad! HAHAHAHAH!

Anyways, if you are recoloring a HUGE spritesheet! Here's what you do. For the SECONDARY COLOR, select the color you want to change! For the PRIMARY COLOR, select the color you want the SECONDARY COLOR to change to! Now select the whole spritesheet, right-click and select CUT! The whole sheet should disapear from the screen! Now what you do is FILL the screen with your PRIMARY COLOR. Now PASTE the sheet! You have now completed 1 step of recoloring your sheet! Repeat with other colors until you complete your mass recolor!

Examples
Cless: Purple Cape + Purple Eternal Sword
Garr's Golden Armor
Sheena's Firespell Casting Frames

That is what she posted and now I am going to pass it on to you guys so we can all be happy spriters. Enjoy, and Happy Spriting! <3

How do you set the secondary color?

Immortal Cookie - July 11, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
You get the colordropper tool, and you right-click on the mouse on the color you wish to be the secondary color. =)
Or, you could simply just find the color on your color palette thingie and right click on the color there as well. =)

lol, I usually use another method but that is nice! =D

Ozymandias - July 11, 2006 03:46 AM (GMT)
You could always use the eraser tool.

foreground color = color to change
background color = color to change to

right clcik = apply where eraser is.

For photoshop users, just use the bucket tool with "continuous" unclicked.

EDIT: The method you use, however, is used to amke fur like this

THere's an insane amount of shade in that however, and I prefer my own method of fur... it looks less... retro.

Lisa Fox: XD Hehe, looks like someone likes. =3

Ozy - Ooh, good idea with the eraser thing. You can use that trick for certain places that will be hard to avoid/reach when you use the Mass Recolor Trick. ~_^

Lisa Fox - July 11, 2006 05:05 AM (GMT)
lol I normally use the earaser trick! =3 I use paint to sprite even if I do have photoshop XD

You are a madman. Layers work wonders!

Lisa Fox - July 11, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
One: I'm a girl :P
Two: Yeah, I'm just not used to it, I can try...and see if it turns out better :P

Ozymandias - July 11, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
If you duplicate the layer you are working on you can click the eye button to compare your changes to the original, and if you don't like what you've done you can just trash it and start again....

Norma the Echidna - July 12, 2006 01:53 AM (GMT)
What's a pick color tool?and this trick doesn't work for me...

Ozymandias - July 12, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
The eyedropper. Right click with it to get the background color.

It's easier to use the eraser tool anyways

Norma the Echidna - July 12, 2006 02:01 AM (GMT)
well to tell the truth i'd rather hand color.

Lisa Fox - July 12, 2006 02:15 AM (GMT)
Eh, I guess everyone has their own prefrences -_- And thanks for that Sage, I might try it out!

Do you mean "a Tails recolor"? Cause you can get Tails's colors using the eyedropper.

Also, I've got something here that might help people a bit. It's a little sheet that can give people the idea for colors they might want their doods and doodettes.
