Title: A new rule Idea for fanfics, comics and all art.

Tails Fanatic - December 28, 2006 11:15 PM (GMT)
I want to propose a rule where when people write a fanfic or a comic that the people commenting say more than good job on that and stuff like that and actually comment instead. Because this is a great story is not that much feedback and not likely to help the author. At least give your thoughts on it, that way the artist or writer knows what to work on or what he or she is doing right. What do you think?

This was what I originally said, it changed some since I started, but we think that people should try sometimes to right a little more than just good job, that is a nice story or something like that. What you think?

Riikka - December 28, 2006 11:20 PM (GMT)
i do agree. advanced critiques helps an artist far more than good job. it shows them ways to improve, which in the long run are remembered more than the "thats a good job" comment.

Sukaretto Kitsune - December 28, 2006 11:44 PM (GMT)
Hm... it's a good in some ways, but not everybody is an expert artist or writer. Some may not be able to help improve it. I wouldn't know how to help an artist out myself. But the member may want to say that they still looked at it and enjoyed it.
Though they could still say more than just "nice job"

They could add why they liked it otherwise

Mcloud1 - December 29, 2006 01:21 PM (GMT)
Completely pointless rule. What else can you say in a fan fic thread besides "Good job"?

Tails Fanatic - December 29, 2006 05:19 PM (GMT)
It is not pointless you. Look at the posts by me, Dash, and Rikka, We post these nice long posts telling our thoughts or what we liked and stuff like that. Those good job things, do not help at all and irritate me.

Riikka - December 29, 2006 05:26 PM (GMT)
its possible to atleast retell the story back in a summed up way. this may not seem like it has a purpose, but to be honest it does a lot for the writer. it shows them not only that you read it, because you posted, but it shows them how you interpreted the writing. from that they can change it in spots that they feel were not perceived as they writer invisioned, and as a result improve the story.

one doesnt have to be an editor to post more than nice job pal

Sukaretto Kitsune - December 29, 2006 06:00 PM (GMT)
Ah yes, that would be very nice

TailsNeverFails - December 30, 2006 12:52 AM (GMT)
Why can't you artists/writers ask for advanced critique? It's as simple as that, just ask and if people don't do it then action should be taken.

Speed-X - December 30, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
I agree.
Hey, if you make that a rule, could you make it apply to the drawings, sprites, etc. forums? That'd be great. But, if not, then that's alright, too. XD
besides, even if someone asked for advanced critique, it's most likely that won't come to the viewers' attention.
And, if someone didn't like to be criticised, then the person could tell them what they think about, instead of pointing out all of the flaws.
So, really, it's not pointless. It's important- especially if you wamt to improve. Those kinda comments spoil people, Y'know... xD

Trixie Prower - December 30, 2006 04:00 AM (GMT)
yeah but TF I already said this could not be a rule because not everyone is good at that sort of thing, and when I already said "guide-lines at the max" isn't this topic pointless when we've already talked about it before? O.o

as a guide-line it's not bad but I think it'd be too hard if it was manditory.
and some people don't like having people judging for their writing, although I wouldn't mind at all we need to look at this from a group standing point ^_^

Speed-X - December 30, 2006 04:04 AM (GMT)
Like i said, they would'nt have to critic, I guess.
and if so, then they could just say what they like or dislike about it.
say for instance:
"OMG J00 ARE TEH ROXORZ!!"
instead of saying that, or criticising, you could just say
"ZOMG!!! I love it!!! the shading rocks!!!"
or, something like that.

Riikka - December 30, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
true trixie, but would it be possible that one be able to say i would like advanced critique.

when we say it now....it does nothing

and if we dont put [AC] in the title, then you dont have to say anything but good job...keep it up

Yeah, really.
Maybe if that would work out, then... hm...
But, yeah, true, that does absolutely nothing. it's like they didn't even pay attention to that part.
anyways, SSMB uses that rule, and it works for them perfectly. If someone doesn't write what the liked about it, then a staff member would edit the post saying something like "WHAT is it that you like about it?!"

Riikka - December 30, 2006 04:12 AM (GMT)
ya it would be like putting [Mature] in the title. its kinda hard to miss that when you click the link. so you kknow well before you start reading that the story will be Mature.

well if you put [AC], you know even before you read, the writer would like some feed back :P

Speed-X - December 30, 2006 04:15 AM (GMT)
though, usually, in a lot of sprite and art topics, it's like they totally ignore it, or just say "I don't see anything wrong with them."
of course, that right there is the issue of a lot of people... like Trixie said.
huh... I'm a bit confused...

Riikka - December 30, 2006 04:23 AM (GMT)
well if you dont see anything wrong then, is it possible you can say things you liked?'
(expanding from stories to all art)

for example. its a picture....like this
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c265/fal...by_Archinos.jpg

now some may not see anything they feel could be better, but hey...those eyes are great, and that tail is good too.

That's exactly what i've been trying to say this whole time!! xD

Riikka - December 30, 2006 04:29 AM (GMT)
i noticed that, but sometimes its best to spell it out xD

hmm well if trixie said no, it may not be a rule, but it could possilby become common practice

Trixie Prower - December 30, 2006 06:49 AM (GMT)
hey I wasn't against not posting opinions, I just think it would be hard to have it a rule, but sure go ahead and ask people their opinions on what they liked or whatever types of opinions you're looking for.

I for one would love that kind of feedback ^^
anyone who also wants comments on their work can ask in the topic of when they start the topic or whatever they'd like I see nothing wrong with that ^_^

I'm just saying posting a rule would be hard because not everyone's looking for that type of feedback some people are fine with hearing a "good job" ^^
asking on the other hand has nothing that could really lead to a flame war.

if the person still dosen't comment I wouldn't want to see anyone getting mad because at least they posted, all I'm saying is if anyone wants to post that kind of feedback that's fine and there's nothing wrong with asking ^_^

Kanti the Spon - December 30, 2006 11:43 AM (GMT)
its a good rule in concept, but be prepared to get a lot less feedback, as a lot of people dont have anything particularly useful to say, so they wont

you might find that instead of making people post useful comments, you just stop them posting the unuseful ones, and you will end up with no more help, and a lot less general feedback. im not saying it wont work, but id rather have a 10 people tell me my work is good, than 2 people tell me how to improve it. just my opinion though

the idea should be encouraged, but i dont think it should be a rule

Speed-X - December 30, 2006 05:02 PM (GMT)
I agree. That's the real stupid thing. The more you ask for it, the less they'll post...
but, if the opininion idea were a rule, then i'm sure that'd work, right? Atleast it's not saying that you have to give criticism all the time...
if it were a rule, though, i'm sure no one would post, anyways, so...

That probably won't suffice, either. Instead, give what you think could help or talk about the little tid-bits that you found.

Because nothing depresses a artist/fanfiction writer more than lack of feedack/comments.

Midori - January 16, 2007 04:57 AM (GMT)
I agree that it should be a practice

Giving a critique helps the writer improve on his own work and also a critique doesnt hafta be bad. It can simply jus be pointing out something specific in the work that you are complementing too. I cant help but give a critique, i feel as though they'd think i skimmed through it or something ifs i didnt. Jus givings some aid helps them to do better on their next work. And i loves comlimenting them on certain things that they did, this boosts their confidence too ^^. Its fun critiquing (god i cants spell), it allows me to feel like my comment is actually meaning something to them and i also jus loves spreading my opinion xD
