Title: Sleep when you are dead.
Description: How much extra time can you get to PS?

Mats - August 13, 2006 08:14 AM (GMT)
well i have been awake now for 31 hours. That has given me more time for things, I guess some people would use that extra time to pen spin in, however, I have spent it mapping and talking on MSN.

do your homework

NO. After another hour awake, I have learnt the middlebak (Thanks a bunch Eriror!). I intend to use the rest of this time to practice tricks. We shall see if sleeping when dead is a good way to improve pen spinning. I guess there will come a point though, where I will become to tired to think, and will just fail miserably and fall asleep. -32 hours, wooo.

Okay, after the 32 hour mark, tricks become far harder to learn. It seems that sleep is actually necessary to do pen spinning. So, if you want to put in long hard nights of pen spinning to try and get good, get some long nights sleep to, or your practice will be no good.

DkGamer - August 13, 2006 11:32 AM (GMT)
no good at all. You should only practise pen spinning when you have a clear mind. Without much worries and such. But than agian, its good to spin to relief stress.

:stupid:

RippDrive - August 13, 2006 01:56 PM (GMT)
Practicing anything while at the point of mental and/or physical exaustion is one of the best ways to expand your skills. Or atleast this is my experience, as long as you don't get sloppy and focus as hard as you can.

Last time I stayed up for 38 hours I spent a lot of that time playing CS, the next day it all seemed to easy because I could actually focus my eyes on the screen and move my mouse around smoothly.

yxan - August 13, 2006 10:30 PM (GMT)
just remember to sleep for 8 hours after that, cuz if you sleep less you miss the part of sleep where you remember the stuff you recently did

RippDrive - August 14, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
Well after that day I slept for about 14h. Man that was sweet.

Zombo - August 14, 2006 12:42 AM (GMT)
if you relaly need to cut down sleep time, try "polyphasic" sleep

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

You will sleep a lot less without feeling tired (as it maximizes the effect of sleep thus requiring less time) but its regime is quite unreasonable for common life (your normal schedule won't work with it)

No, when you sleep your body goes through different cycles of chemical changes and muscle growth. This kills you a lot.

QUOTE
This is supposed to be achieved by spreading out sleep into short naps of around 20–45 minutes throughout the day. Advocates claim that this is supposed to allow for more waking hours with relatively high alertness.

Besides, I doubt you will have the willpower to get up after 45 minutes of sleep.

Zombo - August 14, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
hmm yes polyphasic sleep has its fair share of criticism...but keep it mind this is not something you can do instantly...it can take a few weeks of adaptation.

just like you can't adjust to jet lag instantly. Doesn't mean you shouldn't.

Mats - August 14, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
Just to update, i'm still awake and pen spinning, though that is not all i have been doing, I think it is about 43hours now. I have learnt several tricks and half learnt others, and other than a strange incident of forgetting a trick I learnt for a few hours, everything actually seems normal.

I'm not crazy.

Zombo - August 14, 2006 02:40 AM (GMT)
getting dangerous... i suggest you take a normal sleep at the end of the second day, to fool your body into thinking that the 24-cycle was twice as long.

just don't be the south korean guy who died of heart failure after 50 consecutive hours of Starcraft.

I have stayed awake for long periods before, it's fine - He died cos he was still. I'm just wondering what the general effects are on things i do, like juggling, piano and pen spinning.

There are very few so far.

strike that: at 51+ hours, pen spinning practice becomes harder, you can't concentrate proporly. i would say practice now is worth half as much as normal.

Zombo - August 14, 2006 11:50 AM (GMT)
heh... probably takes off a few years out of your life too.

RippDrive - August 14, 2006 01:33 PM (GMT)
I personally have heard of a few cases of people dieing after really long lan parties and shit. Probably 3-4. There was that person who died after playing WoW for a few days. I think it's a combo of sleep deprevation and way too much energy drink.

A friend of mine ones stayed up for 114 hours. Then again he was fucked up on all kinds of drugs and almost died...

Mats - August 15, 2006 10:17 AM (GMT)
hehe. I fell asleep after 80hours or so anyways. Don't worry, I'm still alive.

Eriror - August 15, 2006 12:51 PM (GMT)
w00t! You didn't beat my record of 98. ^_^

spinofdoom - August 15, 2006 01:23 PM (GMT)
Seriously,I don't get the point of trying to skip/reduce sleep time.8 hours a day is still the best way of sleeping.

RippDrive - August 15, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
Prove it, there is really no scientific reason why polyphasic sleep should be any less healthy than monophasic, most people just assume it is because it's not 'natural.'

yxan - August 15, 2006 08:30 PM (GMT)
except for the fact that when you sleep you:
1: kinda sort all your memories and stuff, helps you remember things
2: grow (depending on what age, but hair n other stuff still grows when you're old)
3: rebuild your body, same as 2, but this you keep doing for your whole life.

RippDrive - August 15, 2006 11:10 PM (GMT)
But 8 hours isn't required for all that. It's just suggested because scientists still don't really understand sleep, how it works or why we do it.

Shut up Eriror. YOu said you had 1 hour of sleep in the middle of that anyway.

FallenSeraph - August 16, 2006 12:13 AM (GMT)
i have only stayed up to do homework. and that usually is only in the case of an all nighter so that never goes over lik 24hrs awake. and that is with the help of caffiene.

Mats - August 16, 2006 12:52 AM (GMT)
Well, on the second night of my staying up, I had 24 pro plus pills in a few hours to keep me awake. They made me feel sick though as well.

RippDrive - August 16, 2006 01:22 AM (GMT)
If you are trying to stay up for a very long time caffiene is about one of the worst things you can take. Sure it helps you stay awake for a short time but then you crash. If you actually do take enough caffiene to keep you awake for a very long time you will regret it, you will feel like complete shit and want to sleep so damn badly but won't be able to.

Mats - August 16, 2006 01:42 AM (GMT)
I have done that one before. Wanting to sleep so much, but you can't. It is awful.
