Title: Cutting Barrels

DarkArcher - February 23, 2006 09:18 AM (GMT)
All you need is a wire cutter and a nail clipper file. However, this only works for barrels made of soft plastic like G2s, RSVP caps, SuperGel cap, etc.

Barrel Cutting

killsburydohboy - February 23, 2006 12:07 PM (GMT)
Wow, that'll save a lot of time. The only problem I see is that it isn't straight across, its kind of slanted.. Do you just file off the extra? And does this work with hggs?

nike t - February 23, 2006 12:10 PM (GMT)
nice vid saves lots of time for sum ppl and i would never have thought of using a wire cutter (well not immediately after sitting there wondering wut to cut with i would sumhow find a wire cutter but that saved me time) :D

DarkArcher - February 23, 2006 01:20 PM (GMT)
Slanted? Not really, the edge of the blade is flat at the bottom. It doesn't work for HGGs though. The plastic would just crack. You'll need a hacksaw to deal with the HGG.

nike t - February 23, 2006 01:23 PM (GMT)
i think he means the plastic thingy looks slanted at the part where u just cut it

well dark archer wouldnt the easiest way to cut a barrel woudl be to cut the barrel by heating a knife with a small flame and then jsut push down

trust me it works but u have to be careful cause u have to cut slowly or you will ruin the barrel

i didn't know that .......
does it work on all pens ??

Eso - February 23, 2006 09:54 PM (GMT)
I think it would work only on soft plastic. You would think the melting point is lower.

fung0wd0d41 - February 23, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
well i can cut through HGG barrels RSVP barrels G2 barrels just fine ..... u just have to heat it longer for harder plastic

ader10 - February 23, 2006 11:21 PM (GMT)
I actually use a Fiskars Rotary cutter.
Its used for sewing and my mom doesnt use it any more.
Sharp like an exacto but easier to handle for barrel cutting. ;)

DkGamer - February 24, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
i didnt like the the heating of the knife in the flame and slicing it down, the edge of the barrel gives a melted finish.... using darkarcher's method, i can get extremely smooth cuts and it takes only like 30 seconds for me to cut the g2 barrel with a smooth cut. It didnt even needed to be filed because it was extremely smooth. Thats just my opinion at least...

Rob - February 25, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
hmm isn't there a risk that the barrel will crack?

I dont heat the knife. The knife is circular too.
So its basically what he does without the tape.

killsburydohboy - February 25, 2006 10:41 PM (GMT)
I tried cutting the G2 barrel with wire cutters but it just got squished and wasn't circular anymore, is it just because my wire cutters aren't sharp enough?

DarkArcher - February 26, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
Oh, that does happen. All you need to do is leave some space before making the cut.

killsburydohboy - February 26, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
Leave some space?

DkGamer - February 26, 2006 02:13 PM (GMT)
yeah. leave some space for you to trim it later on, dont cut it exactly on the line using the wire cutter, cut it leaving some space for you to trim it later on, for you to trim, it will give a very smooth finish

WhatTheHell - November 23, 2006 08:54 AM (GMT)
problem of all members ?

Steps 1 :

after measure the length of the G-2 barrel , tape it as shown in the picture
its two masking tape , need to have a small gap between them

Steps 2 :

cut it carefully

Steps 3 :

Use no.800 abrasive paper then no.2000 to abrase it smoothly , after that , use polishing compound to make it better , finish !

   :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: you have way too much time on your hands W.T.H.... you cut your barrels with a serrated razor!?!?!?!?

zepiroth76 - November 23, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
ahahahha ^^

That way seems so long....and I would never bother putting masking tape on my barrels but hey, your pens turn out better than mine

yeah , it takes more time
but the result is excellent ! :metal:

masterskittle - November 23, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)
Good Job  I do the same thing, but cut with an electric jigsaw :]

SentineL - November 23, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
Why is it the G2's I buy at my Walmart are tainted Dark Gray.

:angryfire:

zepiroth76 - November 23, 2006 04:05 PM (GMT)
Pilot G-2 07s are the tinted barrel kinds that are a black grayish color

Pilot G-2 05s are the ones that you want. Clear translucent barrels.

neXus - November 23, 2006 05:29 PM (GMT)
Next time i take the 0.7 G2 and leigun her.

ed sect mobile - November 23, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
Thank you for showing me how you cut it I was wondering how you always got super clean cuts.

what is polish compound
I have always cut my barrels with a metal nail file. -_-

Joshua - November 23, 2006 05:45 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the serrated razor idea! And I never thought of using a polish compound. Thats a lot of work for a clean cut, but I'm sure its worth it.

Sfsr - November 23, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
I always use scissors <.<

I guess I'm gonna have to try this method next time

spin~TAP - November 23, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
OK, if your pens weren't the absolute best in the world, I would say you were crazy, but man, yours are always so smooth, I might try this if I have time with an MMX, ty.

superscience890 - November 23, 2006 09:54 PM (GMT)
Serrated razor huh?
I had to us a steak knife >_>

DarkArcher - November 23, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
Here's the link to a video I posted long ago on cutting barrels.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo2Pfv3FVUI

Just file with a nail filer after cutting.

And thanks WhatTheHell for posting this guide. I have been wondering how the tools that you have mentioned in another post work and this clears my questions. =)

hahaha! kill her with a KT!! For me its hard to find clear barrel G2s, then i went to the drugstore with my mom and BAM! right there, a whole shelf full!

SL6Commsa - October 23, 2007 01:09 AM (GMT)
I think the heating the knife method is better because it's actually pretty accurate and when i melts some plastic on the end i just get a nail clipper and cut of the melted part and use a filer to file the bad part, but both ways are very good cant decide which to choose so i guess i just flip a coin to decide what to cut with each barrel.

UnEmploymentDude - October 24, 2007 01:23 AM (GMT)
Nice bump...
