Dics stacking by
denyoo06. Whose that?! No idea.
Dice Stacking 1Dics Stacking 2I've seen this one or two times in real life and didn't think anything of it, but these videos are pretty sweet.

DarkArcher did some dice stacking in the Manipulation Collab.
It's quite interesting how the dice stack on top of each other while getting moved around in a cup. :HMMM:
tohxinzhan29 - November 15, 2006 03:50 AM (GMT)
Man, I've tried but failed. I don't know how those guys do it.
Leviathan - November 15, 2006 03:53 AM (GMT)
Wow, I love the second video. So cool! I think I'll try learning this.
tohxinzhan29 - November 15, 2006 05:55 AM (GMT)
Believe me, it is'nt easy.
DarkArcher - November 15, 2006 08:17 AM (GMT)
To make things easier, use a cup with a smaller internal diameter. And ideal size would be a cup with parallel sides having a mouth size that can snugly accomodate 4 dices arraged in a square when positioned side by side.

I'm seriously stumped. Can anyone provide instructions or tutorials on how to do those??
Leviathan - November 15, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
Hey DA, want to give us a little guide on how to do this?
Mats - November 15, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
Umm. It's good, but somewhat limited. You've seen once lot of dice stacked, you've seen it all.
zepiroth76 - November 16, 2006 02:32 AM (GMT)
It's just loads of physics put into this. From the angle that I can see, the dice is being put into the cup, and the movement of the cup is making the dice go higher. The process repeats with more dice and the ending is always extra force applied to one side of the cup in which the dice hit the side at the same time then land on the table stacked. Just my hunch.
DarkArcher - November 16, 2006 03:08 AM (GMT)
Sure, I'll give you a rough guide. First off, let me say that it's not as hard as it looks. In fact, the dice will naturally form a straight row during the shaking process (if you have the right shaking technique that is).
This is a little hard to explain, but the only difficult part for this manipulation is the shaking of the cup. The shaking is done in the shape of a rainbow, left right left right and so on, forming an arch. A pity my other comp which has the webcam is a little spoilt so I can't do a proper tutorial.
But anyway, the arch does not have to be that big. I suggest practicing shaking with 1 or 2 dice(s) in the cup first to test and see if your technique is right. With the correct technique, the dice should stay in the cup with EasE and not fall out. A common mistake would be to shake the cup in a horizontal direction. The arch is very important and the mouth of the cup is like the pivot of the arch. The best I could do was to use paint to draw a rough tutorial. It's no where near those deviant art quality but I hope it's clear enough. =)

For the scooping, after you have brushed past the dice you wanna scoop, immediately continue with the shaking rainbow motion. I notice that many tend to want to shake the cup fast fearing that the dice may fall. However, this is totally unecessary unless your cup is big.
The equipment is very important too. Get dices with 90 degree edges, not rounded edges. Both would do but the latter is easier. If you notice, most videos use the typical CasinO dice. The cup is the most important though. The one I use in the manipulation collab was terrible. It had too big a diameter and is probably too deep for a 4 dice stack. The bigger the cup, the more shakes you gotta do to make the dice stack and the smaller the success rate. Most videos use proper dice stacking cups (small, made of durable plastic with mouth size that can snugly fit 4 dices arranged side by side in a square, not too tall).
I hope this helps, word tutorials are no where near videos I guess.
Leviathan - November 16, 2006 04:59 AM (GMT)
Thanks a lot DA! That really helps. I stack 2 and 3 dice easily, but 4 is kinda hard.
tohxinzhan29 - November 16, 2006 06:04 AM (GMT)
My record so far is 2. However, it was entirely out of luck. I cannot scoop the dice up properly and when I shoot the cup down onto the table after doing the arch motion with the dice inside, the dice all hop around and don't go straight. any help?
zepiroth76 - November 16, 2006 05:26 PM (GMT)
ehhh I can't even get the dice to stay in the cup.
tohxinzhan29 - November 17, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
well, I am able to do the arch motion with the dice staying inside rather well. What I do not know is how to move the cup down after doing the arch motion. Whenever I do that, the dice all bounce around and don't stack up.
zepiroth76 - November 17, 2006 10:00 PM (GMT)
Alright, I can get 2 dice to stay in the cup now. Now, how do you get the dice to stack?
Leviathan - November 17, 2006 10:03 PM (GMT)
Just like DA said, move the cup in an arch shaped path along the table.
tohxinzhan29 - November 18, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)
So, are you saying that I should move in an arch along the table and bring it to a halt at the end of the arch?
Leviathan - November 18, 2006 03:39 PM (GMT)
Yup, just like they do in the videos.
dv297 - November 18, 2006 05:02 PM (GMT)
lol I'd think itd be cool if the guy considered the number bein shown on the camera, then be able to change the order in the cup... but this is hard enough as it is lol
god - November 19, 2006 09:46 AM (GMT)
isnt it more cool when u can break the dice in the cup so it comes out zero instead of one?
or get the dice to NOT stack and come out all sixes
or break them so it comes out all sevens
tohxinzhan29 - November 19, 2006 10:04 AM (GMT)
And how the heck are you gonna pull that off?
zepiroth76 - November 19, 2006 05:05 PM (GMT)
haha probably the same concept somewhat.
god - November 20, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
lol just wanted to point out that dice stacking is really about getting smaller numbers (and therefore one or zero)
its not impossible to break dice... there was a time when dice wasnt wood or plastic
yea i know u ppl dont gamble, but u can always do it for nothing, just to see who has better luck
tohxinzhan29 - November 21, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
Damnit!!!! I still cannot get the dice to stack! I can scoop up the dice well enough but I cannot get them to stack! I am cracking up already!! How do you do it leviathan?? :angryfire:
haulfunk1 - December 29, 2006 09:54 AM (GMT)
I never try it!!!, Dice stacking looks really hard!!! :metal:
Ephem - January 13, 2007 12:00 PM (GMT)
It looks easy but I'm guessing it DEFINTELY isn't :P
Show off in a casion or w.e :P
Joshua - January 14, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
I just watched the videos yesterday, got curious today after breakfast, and learned to stack five(!!!). Its so much fun to practice picking up two at a time, the backhand motion, and doing it really fast.
Thanks for the link!
I wish I had a working camera... :(
FallenSeraph - March 15, 2007 02:53 AM (GMT)
okay so i learned how to keep them in. and im pretty sure i can make two stack within the cup. im jus having trouble puting the cup down. any advice?
Joshua - March 15, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
Personally, I slide the cup on the table for about two passes, allowing the dice to lay flat on the surface. Though... with this method, you have to make sure you're not doing it on your mother's favorite table. XD (I swear, it wasn't me)
Let me know how it works out for you!
FallenSeraph - March 27, 2007 12:16 AM (GMT)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drCHFJ9CKnEhahah yay
okay the key is not only a good cup(parallel sides), but also big dice. the dice when stacked should almost fill the cup. otherwise when you put it down, the dice will fall too much and crash.
other than that, the motion isnt hard, the putting it down takes alot of practice thou
