Title: Making Mistakes

Eso - December 22, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
I remember in speech class, I learned that people shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes, which ultimately leads to fear of speaking. The reason is that when people make mistakes during a speech, people try to block it out and somewhat encourage the speaker to continue. I don't know if this a fact or not but I do find myself blocking out mistakes that speakers make sometimes.

When it comes to spinning, do you yourself find yourself encouraging the person to continue spinning even if he/she makes a mistake? Or are the circumstances different because people have ample time to make a video beforehand? Thoughts?

I think that mistakes are usually less tolerated in videos, but if I were to witness someone spinning in real life, I would be a lot more forgiving because we all make mistakes from time to time. I always encourage the person to keep going.

That was what i was trying to say about mocking begginners a few months ago,
and gave up kinda...thanx for bringing this kind of topic back on the board..

but i don't think thats the point you are trying to get at...
so, what exactly do you want to tell the board?

Lately a few people have put out videos of them making mistakes while spinning.
If looks fine to me knowing that they are freestyling cause it just looks natural cause I think we all drop the pen or mess up a little when freestyling especially when doing some of the more difficult tricks. But if in real life if i somebody spinning make a mistake I would encourage to continue cause if you don't make mistakes are you trying new and more difficult tricks. Making mistakes is part of the learning process. But battle vids should not include mistakes but if somebody submits one with a mistake(which I have done) I am not going to talk bad about them. But if you submit a battle vid or video for a big collab that has a visible mistake I think that the person who submitted should be willing to expect people mentioning the mistake as something they need to work on and not get mad.

If they screw it up in Vids (except for kidding around videos) i definatly not accept it

When I first read the topic, I thought it would be talking about spelling mistakes, 'cause there sure are a lot of them in this thread already!

I just hate PS posers. I'm sorry, but it's annoying when a noob picks my pen off my desk and tries to show me he can do TA. By try, I mean fail. LOL. In vids, it doesnt matter if they make mistakes because you can edit it out and also they are all better than me so I'm like, w/e.

FallenSeraph - December 23, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
okay in member vids or casual stuff im all for mistakes. especially because i make ALOT while trying to film. but please, in a collab vid put some effort into it and minimize mistakes. no one wants to see a huge mistake when looking at a good collab.

Mistakes are unacceptable in collabs. If it's your own video or battle, fair enough, but you will lose some of the combos niceness. In real life, I would let a pen spinner have a bunch of mistakes, since I no there is no-one out there who can hit their big combos with any kind of consistantly.

RandomNewb - December 23, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
i agree with mats... keep doing your video till there's no pauses at least

and... i think bonkura is god hahahah jk he probably makes SOME mistakes too :D

JEB JEB JEB BONKURA IS HOT

Anyway...in presentation vids, you're supposed to show off the best that you're capable of, even if it's a 1/100 chance that you make the combo without mistakes.

I agree that personal combo vids don't matter, but if you are trying to show off, you need to show only the best.

In order of importance to me for showing the least amount of mistakes in videos:
1. Collabs - you don't want to bring down those around you with bad spinning.
2. Battles - you are supposed to do your best against someone else.
3. Member Vids - it's all you, so whatever you feel like showing will work.
4. Tutorials - as long as you can get the point across, it works.
5. Random tricks - probably just made to show something to someone, no need to be perfect

In real life, it really doesn't matter. Unless you're trying to show that you are amazing and really consistent, mistakes don't matter to me.

Well, IMO, you need some practice before shooting vids of penspinning. You can get quite nervous. BUt yeah, the only way I will be ever able to make a vid, is if I hold the camcorder in my hand.

Trogz - December 24, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
well, mistakes are fine in real life but people, take the time to film another clip if you screw up! Its ok to waste another 10 minutes of your life to film a combo if it looks nice. I usually spend about 20 minutes and about 30 tries before i submit a video.
