Title: Comssa Retractable By Dr1v37h38u5
Dr1v37h38u5 - January 22, 2007 11:21 PM (GMT)
When i first spun a comssa, I was disappointed in the fact that the writablilty of a comssa was somewhat lacking. I have created a mod that uses a normal ballpoint pen inktube, eliminating the messy felt tip. Also, I made the pen retractable, which is always a plus. Using leftover parts and an old Comssa, I present the ComSSA Retr.
There are a lot of steps involved, but I did not find it hard to make the pen.
Hope you like it!
Materials Required:
1 - Fully modded ComSSA (old or new, it doesn't matter)
1 - Bic Clic Pen

1 - Long Inktube (i used an RSVP inktube) Any kind should work, as long as it is long enough. Before, I had a shorter inktube that i elongated with the toothpick method.
1 - Spring (I used a RSVP Retr. Spring) Any kind should work as long as it fits inside the comssa barrel
1 - piece of tissue paper
1 - X-acto Knife, or something similar.
1 - Screwdriver (Philips) It should be about the size of an the inktube.
1 - Fine Toothed Saw (Optional)
1 - File
1 - Toothpick
1 - Roll of Tape
1 - Needle Nosed Pliers
1-5 - Staples
Directions:
1 - Remove the back cap of the Comssa
2 - Remove the ink inside the Comssa
3 - Cut off the tip of the Comssa, as in the picture.

4 - Using a toothpick, poke out the remaining part of the felt tip.
5 - Wash out the inside of the Comssa body
6 - Widen the opening of the Comssa body (the part you just cut) using the X-acto Knife or something else.
7 - Make sure the inktube fits completely through the hole.
8 - Using the X-acto Knife or the screwdriver, create a hole through the comssa cap

9 - Make sure the metal tip of the inktube fits through, but not the plastic.

10 - Pull the Clicker part of the Bic Clic Pen out of the barrel
11 - Use the Fine Tipped Saw to cut the bic clic [B]barrel[b/] (NOT THE CLICKER MECHANISM) about 1 cm from the back
12 - File completely off the clip
13 - Slide the section of the barrel onto the clicker part as far as it goes.
14 - Wrap tape around the bottom of the clicker part (to keep it in the comssa body) and around the section of the barrel (to keep the comssa cap on)

15 - Cut off .5 cm from the back of the RSVP inktube (if you are not using an RSVP inktube, you will have to adjust accordingly)
16 - Using the pliers, crimp the inktube right in front of the "02"
17 - Wrap a staple or two around the inktube on the spot where you crimped it
18 - Stretch out the spring so it reaches further down the inktube, almost touching the metal.
19 - Wrap some tissure paper around the inktube.
20 - Now you are ready to assemble the pen.

21 - Slide the inktube into the comssa barrel
22 - Slide the Bic Clic clicker part into the comssa following the inktube.
23 - Make sure the retraction mechanism works, you should be able to see the inktube move back and forth when you push the button.
24 - Put the cap with the hole onto the front of the Comssa
25 - Make sure the inktube comes out like in the picture. If it doesn't you may need to adjust the length of the inktube.

26 - Click it a couple times
27 - Put the other cap on
28 - Congratulations! You have created a ComSSA Retr!
Here's some more pics of it:

Sorry for the dirty grips and barrel, i've been carrying it around in my pocket.
Pros:
- It spins almost exactly as a Comssa
- It is not a noisy pen, though there is still noise to be heard while spinning
- Can be made with old, retired, Comssa's
- Balanced right in the middle
- Durable
Cons:
- The pens come from two different countries, which may make them hard to aquire.
- Uses parts from, at the fewest, three pens.
- Makes a little noise
- A little complicated to make
- Requires many tools
If there are any questions, or you note any unclear portions of the tutorial, post them below. I will do my best to answer them.
EDITS:
Steps for a Metallic Comssa Retr.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO MAKE THE V2, DO NOT PUT THE METAL TIP ON THE REAR COMSSA CAP.
make sure the spring you use is particularly strong. otherwise it will not be able to push the inktube back into the barrel. the bic clic spring works well but tends to get stuck inside the comssa barrel.
follow steps 1 - 7
on step 8: make the hole large enough for the ink tube to completely go through without resistance
ignore step 9
follow steps 10 - 14
on step 15: do not cut the ink tube. instead, extend it about .3 cm.
on step 16: crimp the inktube about 1.8 cm closer to the back of the inktube.
follow step 17
on step 18: don't stretch the spring all the way to the metal, it's too far. instead stretch it to about 1 cm from the metal tip.
follow steps 19 - 24
on step 25: obviously, the inktube will come out of the metal tip.
follow steps 26 - 27

Im hoping to get a comssa as soon as i can get the RSVP's to trade for it. So, when I get one, ill have to try this out as its a waste to not use the ink in a pen IMHO.
Also, by the sounds of it, this doesnt sound like that bad of a mod, I like it better than the one I made...

This has to be one of the greatest retractable mods I have seen in a long time. It looks like a normal comssa, spins (As you say) like a normal comssa. This pen sounds excellent, looks extremely professional, and is rather inexpensive to make. The bic clic pens are extremely easy to find here in the states as almost every company uses these pens for promotional purposes. I personnaly do not have a comssa (Hope to be getting some soon), but once I get some I will definitely make one of these! Great job!

 Looks very nice, I'll definitely try making one if I can find a Bic Clic Pen. Nice job!

Man, you should see all of my bic click pens...In a sec, im going to post a pic of my pen collection, which is one hell of a sight... B)

Nice job, the way the inktube comes out is like the "sexangle comssa" on PDS, but the retractable part is completely different. I like yours better because it looks like a real comssa and also looks pretty sweet with the back cap off and the clicker part on.
Kudos.
kavondak - January 23, 2007 12:58 AM (GMT)
dude that mod POWNES!!! GREAT JOB!
yet ANOTHER reason why i want dong-as.... :banghead:
Eburt - January 23, 2007 01:41 AM (GMT)
Wow, congrats. This is pretty awesome. I just wanted to add that if you prefer the ComSsa Metalic then you could drill the whole in the front large enough for the whole tube, and use a slightly longer tube (may have to crip a bit further back as well) and just have the HGG tip stop the inktube from coming all the way out, as it does fit for that.
UnEmploymentDude - January 23, 2007 02:04 AM (GMT)
BAH! ITS SO SEXI! I WANT MY COMSSAS NAOW!!!
Dr1v37h38u5 - January 23, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
@ eburt - yeah, i was thinking about that
i'm working on a metallic version that doesnt require taking off the back cap to click.
i'll post it if it's possible.

Congratulations on making it. I was planning to make a retractable comssa but I never bothered to finish it. But mine would be more like an Retractable comssa momentum but with the comssa cap instead of the G2 barrel.
strat1227 - January 23, 2007 10:27 PM (GMT)
YYAAAAYYY i just made it :D :D :D :D its amazing :D
firepong - January 23, 2007 10:52 PM (GMT)
I think im going to make a retractable Dr.Kt...Im just not going to do anything to it as I just got it...
EDIT* That is if you dont care...I was going to use the same idea you did, just with a different pen...

YES ZOMG
FINALLY A MOD THATS USES MY USELESS BIC CLIKS, too bad i cant get comssas T_T :banghead:
Trogz - January 24, 2007 03:21 AM (GMT)
foofdude was buggin me back in the day to make one. but this is nice!!!!! A legend in our midst. my idea was like yours but to extend the clicker until it reaches the back of the cap, cut off the little nubbin' like where you screw on the hgg tips and glue the nubbin to the clicker so you push the nubbin to make it retract. if you made that it would change the world... ;)

| I think im going to make a retractable Dr.Kt |
you would have to cut some metal or use th pen's tips cause the holes in the shakers' tips are too small.
firepong - January 24, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
Ye... noticed that when i was starting to think of a way to make it...I dont want to change the wieght, so im going to try and think of another way...
I was going to put it on the side of the pen where the larger pen hole is, but that will change the balance of the pen, so I cant do it that way...
MuChO_LoCo - January 24, 2007 04:04 AM (GMT)
Do normal rsvp ink tubes work? because doesn't it need the little bump so the spring will bend
=(( can't make one, dont have a tool to poke the hole
edit: thx, the thumbtack worked but it took like 20 mins at scratching at the sides

fitzgeraldhimself - January 24, 2007 04:56 AM (GMT)
Genius even though I don't really like comssas. Maybe you could extend the mod and make a retr for a metallic comssa too!
wlid - January 24, 2007 01:30 PM (GMT)
Oh, I did really like this mod, it must be the best retractable mod I've seen.
Dr1v37h38u5 - January 24, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
@ MuChO_LoCo
an RSVP inktube works well, as i said in the tutorial
you have to use pliers or your teeth to indent the inktube about where the writing starts (closer to the metal tip)
after that, you have to wrap a staple or two tightly around the indent to stop the spring from sliding along the inktube.
MuChO_LoCo - January 25, 2007 12:33 AM (GMT)
oh... whoops too late, i guess i didn't read that part. I used a profile ink which is almost the same but already has a bump
Dr1v37h38u5 - January 25, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
profile inks are a little too short
at least the non-retractable profiles are.
i didn't check the retractable profile inktube
Trogz - January 30, 2007 11:28 PM (GMT)
i dont understand the funtion of the tissue paper
LegendOfFireHands - January 30, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
It's for noise reduction.
xshadowfire - January 30, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
really nice looking, but i think it sort of defeats the purpose of a retractable pen...isn't the whole point of a retractable pen so that you don't need to take off a cap?
Dr1v37h38u5 - January 30, 2007 11:56 PM (GMT)
yeah... i'm working on that... wait for the Version 2!
also, i partly designed this mod since i dont like the felt-tip marker. since i am a lefty, it gets all over my hand. also, the ink gets all over the inside of the comssa cap, which darkens the cap. this make the two caps not match, which bugs me.
TurbulentTurtle - January 31, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
Awesome mod, just made one for myself and I can definitely see myself using it a bunch.
xshadowfire - February 5, 2007 12:50 AM (GMT)
i just shoved an rsvp inktube in there and it works fine...as a pen.

| really nice looking, but i think it sort of defeats the purpose of a retractable pen...isn't the whole point of a retractable pen so that you don't need to take off a cap? |
not really.... the reason i like it over just a regular pen is the fact that at school, i can spin w/ the pen out, so i dont have to do anything to make it write except, well, write :D..... but at home i can have the pen part in, and not mark myself all up.....its the only pen i know of that balance both when in write mode, and when in not write mode (if that made any sense)
xshadowfire - February 5, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
so now when you want to write, you not only have to take off a cap, but you have to take off a cap and click?
Dr1v37h38u5 - February 5, 2007 10:09 PM (GMT)
hey hey hey!
don't get mad. get GLAD! XDXDXD
i'm working on it. i already told you. be patient. please. thank you. have a nice day.

I don't think that's a big problem, but it takes away some of the good things about the retractability. Still, it's good to have at school for example. It's nice with a fully modded Com.Ssa that you also can write with.
