Title: Team-based Pen Spinning Tournament Example
Description: Simulated Battle

Zombo - February 28, 2007 02:57 AM (GMT)
This is an example which shows how the game plays. It does not show any insight on managerial tactics, but helps understanding the game mechanisms.

Battle example:

Format for the tournament: 7 players, 1 reserve. 3 cards. 5 matches.

Manager John has players A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. Assume that A > B > C > ... in terms of better pen spinner. This is team X.

Manager Mary has players 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Assume 1 > 2 > 3 > ... in terms of better pen spinner. This is team Y.

Manager Ann controls team Z, who's scheduled to battle the winner of team X and team Y.

Referee: Bob.

Period 1: John and Mary have to assign captaincy and select their cards. They secretely message their choices to Bob.

End of period 1: Bob reveals the choices: A, B and 1, 2 are captain and assistant for team X and Y, respectively. Bob chooses 2 swaps and 1 freeze, Mary chooses 1 swap and 2 freezes.

Period 2: The match has 5 matches in the format : D1 D2 S3 S4 S5. Mary and John have to assign players to each match: 2 spinners for each doubles match, 1 for each singles match. The left-out player will be the reserve. They may also play freeze on any event. They secretely message their choices to Bob.

End of period 2: Bob reveals the lineups:
CODE
|  D1  |  D2  | S3 | S4 | S5 |
------------------------------
| E  G | C  F | D  | A  | B  | : Team X Lineup (John)
------------------------------
| 2  6 | 3  4 | 7  | 1  | 5  | : Team Y Lineup (Mary)

H and 8 are the reserve for their team since they're not part of any match.

Mary has also applied a freeze on D2; no swap will be allowed on any players involved in this match for the rest of the battle.

Mary has now 1SW (swap) and 1 FZ (freeze) cards left. John has 2SW and 1FZ.

Period 3: John and Mary now have a chance to play their cards to affect the current matchup. They message their choices secretely to Bob, if they do something.

End of period 3: Bob reveals the actions taken:

John swaps D with G and freezes D1. Mary swaps 2 with 7 and freezes D1.
The swaps are executed first, and the lineups look like this:
CODE
|  D1  |  D2  | S3 | S4 | S5 |
------------------------------
| E  D | C  F | G  | A  | B  | : Team X Lineup (John)
------------------------------
| 7  6 | 3  4 | 2  | 1  | 5  | : Team Y Lineup (Mary)

H and 8 are still on the reserve since no swap was them involving them.

Mary has no card left. John has 1SW left.

It is now time to apply new freezes. Even though John and Mary both used a freeze card on D1, one card would have been enough to freeze it. D1 becomes frozen and both cards are consumed.

D1 and D2 are both frozen now. Any players involved in those matches cannot be moved.

Period 4: This is the final period. Mary has no card left so no action can be taken. John has one card left, he can still swap someone if he wishes. John secretely messages Bob of his actions, if any are taken.

End of period 4: Bob reveals that no action have been taken. The lineups are now final.

CODE
|  D1  |  D2  | S3 | S4 | S5 |
------------------------------
| E  D | C  F | G  | A  | B  | : Team X Lineup (John)
------------------------------
| 7  6 | 3  4 | 2  | 1  | 5  | : Team Y Lineup (Mary)

H and 8 are officially the reserve of the battle. They can be used in a substitution anytime during the reserve period.

Bob gives each team a number. Team X has the number 0364, Team Y has the number 8435. They must write this number on a piece of paper, visible at all time during all their videos.

Each team film their videos. Managers privately message Bob if they choose to use reserve substitution.

There's one week left before the deadline, and the reserve period is over.

Bob reveals that Mary used her reserve to substitute player 7. The lineups now look like this:

CODE
|  D1  |  D2  | S3 | S4 | S5 |
------------------------------
| E  D | C  F | G  | A  | B  | : Team X Lineup (John)
------------------------------
| 8  6 | 3  4 | 2  | 1  | 5  | : Team Y Lineup (Mary)

7 is now officially out of the tournament and may not be used for subsequent battles. The match D1 is now handicapped: team X can win 3 points if they win D1, but team Y can only win 2 points if they win D1.

Deadline time. Videos have been submitted and will be judged.

One week later. The results are out.

Team X wins D1. D1 is normally worth 2 points, but since a substitution was used by team Y, the scoring is handicapped. Team X wins 3 points instead.

It's now X : 3-0 : Y.

Team Y wins D2. D2 is an even-number match, it's worth 3 points.

It's now X : 3-3 : Y.

Team Y wins S3. S3 is worth 2 points because it's odd-numbered.

It's now X : 3-5 : Y.

S4 is tied. 1 point to each side.

It's now X : 4-6 : Y.

S5 is won by Team Y. It's worth 2 points.

It's now X : 4-8 : Y.

Team Y wins and will play Team Z. Since Team Y used substitution, they will have no reserve, and cannot use player 7. Their roster will be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.
