Title: Pentrix Update
Description: Can it be true?

kam - May 3, 2007 08:17 AM (GMT)
Ok, this will probably be my shortest post ever (seeing how I have to get up in 5 hrs to go to work)

After over three years of no content update, I finally updated my site. This is far from what I had planned, but I figured people got tired of waiting (and so did I).

I'll let you guys go check the site for yourself as I'm too tired to type more.

peace,
Kam

Super Special Awesome! :spin: I like the new trick section ('duh), looking forward to more updates ^^ Good luck with everything.

ShoeMan - May 3, 2007 09:24 AM (GMT)
First of all :o!!
second, will the new player and videos be up for download so we could watch them on our personal computers like the old ones?

Bobr - May 3, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
WOW!! PENTRIX UPDATE!!! It's so cool. Ballisong combo is so strange, cool but i never see anything like this.
And i have question to u Kam. When is UPSB will be open (in this summer or not)?

TayYH89 - May 3, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
Heh. I've seen those long ago.

Zombo - May 3, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
Cool stuff, although most ps addicts here have seen it.

congratulations on making yahoo main page as well (albeit for a brief moment).

H-J - May 3, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
thanks for updating C=

Vertigo - May 3, 2007 02:38 PM (GMT)
Love the update! Especially the new tricks section, of course.

kam - May 3, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
@Bobr: I have worked on UPSB a lot these past years (slowly, I admit, but I still have worked on it). So much that before I realized, I neglected my own site for 3 years. So I had to balance it out and work on Pentrix for a change. I also feel I'm starting to neglect Superhandz, so that'll be my next priority. But that's not to say that I won't be working on UPSB.

@TayYH89: You're one lucky guy. But I've seen it even before you :P And if you guys pay attention to the dates the videos were added, you'll know approximately when I started working on this tricks section.

@Zombo: Thanks, and thanks to Eriror for making me aware of it. Nowadays I'm a Google user...haven't visited Yahoo! in such a long time.

@ShoeMan: That depends, but is highly unlikely. At this point, I see this new tricks section as a temporary improvement, not a permanent solution. I'm working on a newer tricks section to address the limitations of the current one. If you think about the old videos section as version 1, and the current tricks section as version 2, then I'm working on version 4 (with 3 being a non-usable experiment). Because the tricks section isn't permanent, I don't want to spend much time trying to make the videos downloadable. Manually putting together a zip file with all the videos each time I upload a new trick is gonna be a very tedious and time-consuming task. The idea for the new version of the TricksPlayer (yes, I'm also making a new version for the player) is to have a mini player that can be built-in onto all the videos. That way I can let people download just the videos, without having to package them all together with the tricks player or maintaining an XML file with a list of all tricks. In conclusion, making videos downloadable is one of my goals, but not for this version of the tricks section.

Hehe yes that was a long time between the last update :D

I love the new combo and hope there will come more of that...

Just use the slow-mo function and try to break it down yourself. It's good to practice breakdowning.

Hi Kam, it's nice that you updated your site a bit.

JMember - May 3, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
Kam. Very good update (or upgrade). I havent seen a "Butterfly" trick until I got on Pentrix website (upgraded one).

It's about time this info left the vault. :P

Good stuff to look at, I'm looking forward to what you can add.

K4S - May 4, 2007 01:21 AM (GMT)
Very nice! I used to browse pentrix and the forums back a long time ago haha. An update of any proportion is great :)

Tim - May 4, 2007 07:56 AM (GMT)
awesome update, i didn't think u were going to uptade pentrix anymore, should help me when i try to learn reverse charge and that butterfly looks awesome.

fuzzyshan - May 4, 2007 08:55 PM (GMT)
great job as always Kam a nice reassurance that something is happening in the background. good luck with whatever it is that your doin real life or pen spinning.
EDIT: i notice you added the left handed button i wondered when that would happen.

Sathon - May 4, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
That's the neatest ps site everrrrrr.
I love you kam.

lmao license agreement

Eso - May 4, 2007 11:41 PM (GMT)
The disclaimer before each tutorial will become annoying. Find a way to globally stick in one conspicuous place.

sketching - May 5, 2007 05:47 AM (GMT)
If you have cookies enabled, you should only have to click through the disclaimer once. I have only had to click through it once, myself. After that, you can just view all the other videos without seeing it again.

kam - May 6, 2007 08:25 AM (GMT)
the section was adapted from a file download management app, so the license agreement made more sense there. I just use it as a disclaimer.

Not all videos or tutorials will have one. Only those that I feel need one. Sorry if that's an inconvenience.

kam - May 14, 2007 01:22 AM (GMT)
Hi all,

I updated Pentrix with a new design. That's something I had for about two years, and was planning on saving it for when I had more new content. But I know if I don't do something about it I'll just procrastinate forever.

www.pentrix.com

The color scheme and design is a blend of the old Pentix and the more recent Pentrix color schemes. I hope most of you will like it.

So there it is...new site design...same good old content :P

Oh yeah... some of you may notice that I added code for Google AdSense and Google Analytics. The first one is to hopefully help me pay for the costs of hosting. I never bothered putting ads before because I hated pop-ups and flashing ads. But Google Ads are small and unobtrusive, so if they can help offset the costs of hosting, I don't see why not give it a try.

Google Analytics, on the other hand, is a sophisticated statistics package that should help me understand visitors better, so I can update the site in areas that are in more demand.

Zombo - May 14, 2007 01:25 AM (GMT)
very nice, thanks kam!

this is probably your v50+ of pentrix ahaha

Toast - May 14, 2007 01:28 AM (GMT)
wait, now theres no fancy opening page? :P

firebird - May 14, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
You sure? The placement of the ads seems to avert attention too much. The margin is where you'd expect to find links or content.

exactily what i thought, but if it helps with the cost and it doesnt change then content (for the worse) then go for it

kam - May 14, 2007 01:37 AM (GMT)
Nope, sry...I was told "splash" pages are a thing of the past :P

The homepage should really be the guiding page for your entire site. Having a page with just a logo was pointless and just a temporary thing.

My plan is to add the following to the homepage:

- an embedded video with some sample PS footage (so people who have no clue what PS is can see it right away)
- a summary of the latest trick(s) posted (so returning visitors see what they want right away)
- perhaps a poll (though with the current technology I don't see that happening yet)
- XHTML and CSS validation icons (so visitors know that I took the time to make a site that follow current web standards)
- 50 pop-ups with ads that fill up your screen (lol...just kidding  )

Zombo - May 14, 2007 01:40 AM (GMT)
I'm skeptic about the embedded video. It slows down loading. If yo're going to put a video, i think you need to keep the intro page and put the video there, so that ppl can bookmark the page after and skipping this video.

Hmm...I didn't want to disclose this, but the side bar was originally meant to be used for user panel links.

But since the features are not there yet, I figure I would adapt it for ads.

And I don't mean it's almost invisible, but at least it doesn't greatly the site's usability (some ads are placed in the middle of content which requires extra scrolling, or pop ups require closing the window).

But after you guys mentioned, it does seem to call a lot of attention, so I toned the contrast down.

Edit: Zombo, the video would be an embedded YouTube video, so it shouldn't slow down the page by much. I believe it only loads the first frame of the video, then when the user clicks play, it starts streaming the rest. I wouldn't put something that loads every time as returning visitors don't want to see the same video again and again.

mopcrater - May 14, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
Like the new skin ^_^ . By the way, you should add a pen modding section to the site. I think it would be a cool way for new pen spinners to find out how to make more than just the v1-mx.

kam - May 14, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
Since UPSB is currently not finished, I am considering adding links to alternate message boards on Pentrix's Community page, such as a link to UCPSB. Would this be ok with the staff here at UCPSB?

Zombo - May 14, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
sure.

strat1227 - May 14, 2007 07:04 PM (GMT)
off topic: yo kam, what do you think about UCPSB after UPSB opens?

Tim - May 15, 2007 09:03 AM (GMT)
Kam does the butterfly have a small throw at the end or are you pushing the pen through your fingers with the palm of your hand?

It's a throw

sketching - May 15, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
Butterfly:

Wiper Rev 12 > Pass Reverse 12-23 > Pass Reverse 23-12 > Wiper Rev 12 > Pass Nor 12-23 > Wiper Rev 23 > slide the pen through fingers

After the Wiper Reverse 23, the tip of the pen is right at the finger tips. As he moves his hand across his body, Kam loosens his grip on the pen. The pen slides through the 23 slot until the back of the pen reaches his finger tips. Then, he grabs the back of the pen.

I don't know if you can call that a throw, just a sliding through the fingers.

TayYH89 - May 16, 2007 02:20 AM (GMT)
How do you get the pen to 'slide' without 'throwing' it? I'm sure he didn't push the pen with his palm.
