Title: DR. Grip
Description: Good to spin with?
InhumanElmo - April 5, 2006 10:48 PM (GMT)
My friend, who got me into pen spinning, uses a Dr. Grip. He is a good spinner. I decided to go out and get a couple. Has anyone used them? Are they good? I saw a Dr. Grip Center of Gravity pen which kinda looks cool. Anyone???

Actually it can be pretty sweet if you practice with it. I've seen videos of people spinning that better than I've seen people spin with an MX or something. They're pretty good if you practice a bunch, because it's hard to get used to the thickness and the length.

I have a fun time spinning with it. The DR. Grip will never be my main spinning pen, but I use that pen to write with in class and spin it while using it. With the size, shape and weight, I cannot spin it for very long.
nike t - April 5, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
is it heavy? and who's ur friend is he on ucpsb?
TurbulentTurtle - April 5, 2006 11:04 PM (GMT)
It's not too heavy comsidering the weight we're usually used to, but it's actually pretty good to spin with.
jasonsigar - April 5, 2006 11:21 PM (GMT)
It is okay to spin with for the simpler tricks, such as the fundamentals, but it's quite a short pen so I don't think it's gonna be good for the more advanced tricks.
InhumanElmo - April 5, 2006 11:46 PM (GMT)
Well I bought me a Dr. Grip ballpoint black and the New Center of gravity one and i must say they are pretty sweet. I needed something more mainstream because people were always like "Wtf is up with your pen" cuz I have inserts and stuff. But the Center of gravity one is a little bit thinner than the normal Dr. Grip. I already made and insert for it! They're both good pens in my opinion now. I suggest to anyone that wants a writing/spinning pen that won't have people all like "WTF" get the Dr.Grip. Whats funny to me is that you can make an insert for the COG one! I can do SRFH pretty well. TAs are hard tho because of the grip, but its possible. My friend isn't on any PS websites but hes good. He studied in Korea for a while so he picked up a few things! Too bad he didn't bring any comssas back with him... <_<
xz64 - April 5, 2006 11:52 PM (GMT)
Whats an SRFH?
You could always use an unmodded rsvp to look normal (just be careful with the ink)
Quota - April 5, 2006 11:57 PM (GMT)
i use a dr grip see Le0n and Flashy
the thumbaround and stuff are easy wit it since i use hgg stabilizer to get used to the grippyness of it
the dr grip is awesome wit sonics and isnt so bad with shadow or backaround
InhumanElmo - April 6, 2006 12:04 AM (GMT)
SRFH (Sonic Rise Fall Harmonic, i was too lazy to type it out.) I also made and insert for the grip of the regular Dr. Grip. Not the whole thing but hey, atleast I get to do something to mae it stand out, without having people be all like "WTF".
MonAmiPS - April 6, 2006 02:45 AM (GMT)
its great to do like sonic, fingerpass...etc. (finger kinda stuff) but personally i hate it from normals, and reverse normals (thumb stuff) ;)
Kaoru - April 6, 2006 03:01 AM (GMT)
is there any difference between Normal Dr. Grip and G-SPEC?
jasonsigar - April 6, 2006 05:30 AM (GMT)
I'm sure that there are differences between the two. I've never actually seen G-Spec before in flesh but I have seen pictures of it and it looks as if there are differences to the design at the back, and the colour is different. I think it is a metalic instead of plastic...
K821 - April 6, 2006 06:11 AM (GMT)
the g-spec has a softer grip core, so when you squeeze it, it gives a little. also the body is slightly idffrent and has a clear plastic tube over another tube so it give kinda a transparent look. i think thats pretty much it.
Eggy - April 6, 2006 09:14 AM (GMT)
InhumanElmo - April 6, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
The Gspec isn't quite as heavy or long as the normal Dr. grip, But thumb tricks are a little bit easier because the grip is mor forgiving than the normal one.

Well I bought the Platinum Dr. Grip ($6-$8 expensive) but it was too much of an expert pen so I let Quota have it. The best person I've seen spin with one is Aysh and I only know 2. Aysh is from JEB if some don't know. I only know 2 that spins with it though. Quota and Aysh.
DarkArcher - April 6, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
Dr. Grip is not a good pen to spin with. I got some for myself just because I like its design and it's good for writing. Even a G2 is easier to handle.
InhumanElmo - April 6, 2006 01:02 PM (GMT)
The Dr. Grip is a good pen to spin with once you learn how. I find it alot easier to do some tricks due to the large "sticky" grip. If your a flexible spiner that can switch between pens easily you definitely might want to get one. Im gonna buy a pencil for finals and any scantron tests!
H-J - April 6, 2006 01:42 PM (GMT)
I wouldnt buy any
cuz it is ok to spin with but not really good

ahh - you've just reminded me of how expensive those pens are.
Dr.Grips here in Australia cost around $10 or more - or at least they used to. The price has gone down a bit.
Compare this:
-Dr Grip - $10
-G2 - $3.50
-Crystal M - $2 for 10
Very expensive. And the ink runs out like crazy. One tube of ink cost about $2 and only last about 2 months...
..but I'm probably going to buy more soon. When the exams come along I want a good pen which my hand is very comfortable with...and I remember how comfortable Dr.Grips were. :)

i use like this
Comssa>Rsvp Mx>3000*F>Rsvp Mx>Monami jp v1 final>Monami 153w retractable>F-3000(seems f-3000 body is a bit thinners then 3000*F or optical illusion?)>dr grip>Comssa
yeah and so on

there are A LOT more japanese spinners (including me) who spin this pen as their main pen.
also, the kind that aysh and everyone else uses is not the ink pen. it is the mechanical pencil. i find that one the only suitable one out there (no ink spills and other random stuff). its just that i never write with it.
InhumanElmo - April 6, 2006 10:52 PM (GMT)
My friend uses the pencil and I really do notice a difference in pens when he lets me spin with it. The grip on the pencil is shorter than the one on the pen. It leaves more room for TAs but I still find it difficult to do the Harmonic with them. Oh well....
everun - April 12, 2006 12:12 PM (GMT)
I got a Dr. Grip of ebay for $9.00 Australian to see what all the hype was. It should arrive in a few days! I got this one
http://p.pens1000.com/vp1/36141PIL.jpg is it the right one?
InhumanElmo - April 12, 2006 01:33 PM (GMT)
Yeah thats the pen, your right!
DkGamer - April 12, 2006 04:40 PM (GMT)
there are two types of f3000, the shorter and longer one. the longer one might be a little thinner and the shorter one might be exactly the same as the 3000F. But frankly speaking, other than its length differences, i dont see much difference with it, it spins extremely well if you get used to the weight. the perfect balance of it is also a plus side.
anyway, back to the topic. I used to really like spinning with Dr Grips, that was before I found out about modded pens. Before I used them however, I could do ts on it, infinities, tas and backarounds. But after a while when i switched over, it became a very difficult pen to spin with. The thickness, weight and length is really not suitable for advanced tricks at all. But I still have seen some crazy stuff performed by spinners with a DR Grip, like the japanese spinners for example. All in all, it just depends on yourself, you type of pen you prefer, and whether you have gotten used to the pen.
slickhare - April 12, 2006 06:25 PM (GMT)
i find it to be a good training tool. it makes tricks with RSVP's so much easier. it's challenging, but it can be spun (sp?) with.
darkinertia - April 13, 2006 12:19 AM (GMT)
hmm, i might pick up a couple, over here i found some for 3 bucks each so...
InhumanElmo - April 13, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
Wow 3 Bucks!! Over here (east coast US) its like 6 bucks!!! Well, I use modded pens for serious spinning, but for school its Dr.Grip all the way because my teachers are always yelling at me because im spinning. I still spin with the Dr. Grip, but they can't take it away from me because its not as if I did anything to it so I could spin. But yeah, they're a great writing pen for essays on tests and taking notes. Very comfortable to write with, requires less pressure to write, and it just plain looks good. I Looooooooove the pencil, I could shake it all day!! (for those who don't know the Dr. Grip LTD Pencil has the ability for you to shake the pencil to advance the lead. Based on their other pen "The Shaker", it still has the option for click advance.)
