Title: What Is More Important When Starting?
Description: The tricks or the pen?
en814 - May 31, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
Not sure about this but i was wondering what you guys prefer so i can understand how to start?( I am planning to start from the basics  )
So when you start is it more important to learn the tricks?
or...
Is it more important to find a pen to mod or a pen that your comfortable with?
I dont know... maybe a stupid question but i am curious... :banghead: (T.T)
:boing: :boing: WEEE!
Webo Splash - May 31, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
imo it's the tricks. but using a normal pen like a v.1 is good enough for a beginner. Once you got the tricks mastered, you can mod a better pen. but for beginning, it's all about the tricks
FallenSeraph - May 31, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
both. in a way.
at the VERY beginning its best to focus on tricks.
after you learn basics lik sonic harmonic, TA harm, basic charge passes, you will begin to get a feel for penspinning. then i think it is crucial to find a comfortable pen.
jus a warning, when starting out dont use a long ass or high momentum pen. because then when you get better, you will only be able to spin those.
Eburt - May 31, 2007 01:35 AM (GMT)
Tricks are definately more important IMO. Learn what you can with whatever pen... then try an unsharpened pencil or an RSVP. It will feel a lot easier and you will learn faster. Then you can move o to whatever pen you want, but theres no point in waiting like 2 weeks for a package of HGGs to make an MX before learning tricks....

Hahahaha when i first tried spinning i used a sharpened pencil with two eraser caps on both sides . :vhappy: :vhappy: . Idk i am still using that... u think that is good?

I'd say that's a grat place to start. Try finding an RSVP (shouldn't be hard) and maybe double capping some random marker. That should give you a good idea of what sorts of pen styles there are. Of course thats simplistic, but after a week or so here, you'll find out what pens people like and can trade/buy them.
K4S - May 31, 2007 01:44 AM (GMT)
Spin with whatever you're more comfortable with. A good pen helps you learn tricks faster and as as a result your brain learns the correct finger muscle memory. For example, I learned bakfall using a comssa with signo tips...gave it good momentum and after learning it with the comssa since i knew how to do it i started doing it with an MX and it wasnt that difficult to relearn it. But everyone learns differently so if you can spin a regular pencil just fine then why change?
Tainted Elements - May 31, 2007 02:17 AM (GMT)
i think tricks are more important. don't try to be someone who works on too many mods and buys ****-loads of pens but doesn't know diddly squat to back it.
i have a friend like that, whom i laugh at.

if you learn it correctly the first time youll learn alot more about the trick and about control

TRICKS!
I started out using a fat old pen, kinda crappy, but solidly built. I could drop that thing all day long and not worry about breaking it. Relatively awful balance with a huge grip on one end. Since I was only learning the Fundies back then, it didn't matter.
Then, I moved onto a double-capped RSVP. Heavy.

And YET, he has better pens IMO <_<
But yeah dude. Get an rsvp, put the cap in the back, and you're done. But the pencil/eraser thing is nice. Long and light.
Bobr - May 31, 2007 03:40 AM (GMT)
I think for beginners best pen is easy and long pen. I think pencil is perfect.

Actually, theres nothing wrong with modding pens and enjoying it. I actually have more respect for great modders like K4S than I do for alot of spinners. I have an argument for what you said about your friend, but it would probably turn into flaming, so I'll keep it to myself.
Anyways, yeah, starting out with a pencil is great. Some people like spinning pencil mods. Later on I would work on getting your tricks smoother though, like doing a sonic rise with no thumb assistance. this way you get more of a feel for the types of pens you prefer. For instance, my friend can only do a thumb assisted sonic, and he can't spin any of my modded pens.
Webo Splash - May 31, 2007 03:53 AM (GMT)
Modding is like the best part too, but you need to learn the basics by trying tricks.
Mats - May 31, 2007 08:09 AM (GMT)
Tricks... No question about it. I used an awful pen for the first several months!
Health - May 31, 2007 10:52 AM (GMT)
^ And you still use an awful pen xD
i learnt FPass with a pencil, then moved to a RSVP unmodded.
Ftw.
But then i still dont know any decent tricks, and i still spin stupid pens =_=
Merkuury - May 31, 2007 11:53 AM (GMT)
No doubt tricks are more important in the beginning. When I started I used crappy pencil with duct tape on both sides..
patrick - May 31, 2007 12:01 PM (GMT)
I think also that learning is more important at the beginning but I think that modding is an elemental part of the whole penspinning story.
Rockstargames - May 31, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
Like most people here I just started with a normal bic pen. Learnt the fundamentals with it the moved on to buying some RSVPs online. It's all about finding the pen that suits you I guess. About 1 year into pen spinning I went to the Dr. KT and never went back, lol. Or though I still spin my rsvp mx time to time (and some cs's).
fuzzyshan - May 31, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)
i started with a g2 and i spun that for almost half a year until i put a cap on the back which made it easier to spin then i started making my own mods. Im still waiting for some rsvp's. IMO you can do anything thats long and stick shaped.
frisbee - May 31, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
IMO you should always use the hardest pen you can, if you really want to get good, that is. I used an unsharpened pencil until i couldnt do fingerpass very well with it then i started with unmodded rsvps & then started using an MX type mod (g2 grip & dif tip but basically the same) when i couldnt do backaround.
As a beginner if you start using something really heavy you restrict yourself to heaviness forever, IMO.
Ivan the Terrible - May 31, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
for the first 8 fundamentals the pen doesn't matter really, then you can start using a unsharpened pencil or RSVP v.1, once you start making combos and learn backaround and shadow you could probably make yourself a better mod
but if you learn everything with an ordinary BIC then you'll have tons of respect
K4S - May 31, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
Everyone learns different. Im sure learning with a hard pen and then switching to a heavier pen mod works for some people but im not quite like that. I learn better when i use something heavy or something with decent momentum until my fingers learn the correct movements and muscle memory. For instance, sonic moonwalk (or however you name it) was difficult for me to learn at first with a regular pen or pen mod....so i started practicing it with a drumstick. Practiced it with the drumstick for a day and then the next day tried it with an ungripped/untipped bictory and i could do it pretty easily. It wasnt perfectly smooth but fact is i could do it with a pen now.
I'd say find a pen you can have fun and learn with. DO NOT go out of your way to use the most difficult pen possible to gain the respect of others...because they wont even respect you until you can do fancy combos and make videos.

uhh? If you don't have tricks you can't even spin, so it's tricks obviously???

Wow, owned. This whole thread is pointless now.
frisbee - May 31, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
@K4S: You have a valid point, but there is a difference between learning sonic & moonwalk sonic. I use drumsticks & dr. kt to learn things all the time but it's very different because I could pick up a piece of uncooked spaghetti & do every fundamental. When you're starting out you shouldn't rely on crutches that early.
fitzgeraldhimself - May 31, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
Yes, learn the tricks because they can translate to every medium of item that you will spin. Charge between every finger forward and reverse and fingerpass for/rev, I feel are the most important tricks.

Yeah but if you don't have a pen, then you can't learn the tricks :P
