Title: Public Voting
Description: Just Some Ideas

ShortAssassin - July 17, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
Well, with the ladder started there are a lot more battles going on and many are decided by public voting. This allows the spinners to have the community decide the winner as opposed to judges, and gives the community members the ability to take active roles in the outcomes of battles, and post their comments to the spinners. However, it also allows for people to vote without anyone knowing who they voted for, or that they even voted. This means that friends can vote for friends with no explanation as to why. Or people can just assume that one spinner will win based on prior knowledge, and vote without even watching the videos. Not only can this lead to false victories, but for relatively new spinners, it means they are getting less comments on their videos. For example, let's say I bettle Eriror. Obviously Eriror is going to win, but I still put time into my video, I don't want it to go unnoticed.

So what I'm proposing is to make it so that people have to post if they want to vote. That way, even if they only say they voted for Eriror (returning to the example) I can at least say, "Well, what did you think of my video?" Similarly, if someone votes for me, everyone can say, "Well, what were you thinking?"

So I've come up with two solutions so far. The first is to do it Mafia Game style. You have to put your vote in bold, you can only vote once, and there is no editing. This would mean that double posting would have to be allowed for people who forget comments. I'm not sure how Zombo/Mats feel about this. The other is to somehow make the board work so that you can select a poll option where people have to include text when they vote. Again, not sure how Zombo feels about this.

Anyway, thanks for reading.

Yea, i was thinking that it be decided by mafia voting...

kinda makes more sense IMO

Zombo - July 17, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
1- too complicated
2- don't think it's possible.

Eriror - July 17, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
Vote: Mafia Style

PS, battle me.

ShortAssassin - July 17, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
I don't think the mafia game style would be terribly complicated. Hell, I'll make the thread for voting rules and count the votes for battles lol.

@Eriror: Their would have to be some special rules if I'm gonna battle you lol.

One person votes for his friend and suddenly the entire system has to change?

frisbee - July 17, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
I agree with mats. I've never seen a publicly voted battle come out with a controversial result, in fact I think it's a much better system than judged battles. The very small amount of unfair votes really don't matter, & they wouldnt even be prevented by the new system.

ShortAssassin - July 17, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
Well, it's more for the people like myself who don't have much experience and want comments on their videos on how to improve. Also, in every poll there are at least 5-10 unexplained votes. If I were the spinner, I'd wanna know why people did/didn't vote for my video. I also don't see any major complication with going to the Mafia system, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Zombo - July 17, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
you don't really need comment from every vote if they don't have anything to add to the feedback already received. there can be only so much that can be said. more justifications would lead to spam posts.

A few issues:

-What if I don't wan't to say anything, now I can't vote. I'm frequently one of those unexplained 5-10 votes, but whats the point of making me write "I voted for ____ because he was better."? If people have something useful to say, they'll say it.
-Suppose you & zombo are battling. You have a better video, but me & zombo are friends & we talk online every day. Zombo expects me to vote for him, but I want to vote for you really bad. Therefore I'm either coerced into not voting or voting improperly, or else I end up pissing off my friend. 3 possible outcomes, none good.
-As zombo said, once the key points have been said, comments just become spam.

ShortAssassin - July 17, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
Good point Frisbee, I didn't consider situations where the anonymous voting is useful. Zombo, you're probably right as well, many posts might be unndeeded. Anyway, just an idea to consider if voting for friends/people not getting enough comments gets out of hand.

hmm, im kind of worried about "strategic voting" in the ladder...

like people just vote for who they would rather win, in order to get themselves higher....

and a quick question, zombo you said that ONLY public voting could happen ... but say (hypothetically) that im battling scott, and we both agree that we want eso to judge, and eso agrees... could we do that instead?

rookee - July 28, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
I agree with SA's idea, because many people on this board "dislike" me. I would like to know why I lost.

yes, but it has to be public, like the judges have to post in the thread saying who they want to vote, and you have to find your own judges.

edit: the person has to be outside the ladder, to ensure no interference.

yea, thats what i was thinking
