Title: Kam's Insert
RandomNewb - July 22, 2007 03:01 AM (GMT)
Is it worth a Dr. KT? Or are people just utterly stupid for trading such a large amount of pens/expensive/decent pens for this piece of paper with a great man's signature and some ink on the back that probably costs about like oh say a dollar or two to print off.
Discuss.
My thoughts? Absolute BS! Do NOT waste your money! If someone trades you for this, I say, fuck, just forge the damn signature and then you can be the coolest kid on your block. But please, please kids, do not trade your 12 dollar KT for something silly like this. And please do not forge it and send it to some poor guy who's gonna get owned by you.
GG...
Oh yeah...
JEB JEB JEB!

Who wants to trade a Dr. KT for some paper? That's just silly. Not to mention, it's a rip off.
AzNwAr3oR - July 22, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
Well the insert that I received at the gathering is actually special... Only 20 or so were made... Your computer tell me what it is its just a hunk of metal and plastic but why is it so expensive? I'll tell you why... Its because its the way it was put together. Okay great, what do we spin? Pieces of plastic and metal. So you see if you break everything down it might come down to a piece of paper or a piece of plastic or whatever! So you see its all about how its put together; Kams insert was designed beautifully and it has signatures that are not easy to get so I'd say inserts could be worth alot if you think about it. Although, I must say I'd rather have pens than an insert ; )
RandomNewb - July 22, 2007 03:28 AM (GMT)
If you break everything down into an atomic form they're atoms, but sorry, if you're saying crushing your pen into little splinters and writing words onto it makes it cost more money than it is, you're wrong. It's about the actual form, we spin pens, not paper. 'Cept for ComPaper, which seriously kicked ass.
AzNwAr3oR - July 22, 2007 03:55 AM (GMT)
So basically what ur saying is we spin pens not plastic okay. Fine, we use inserts not paper.
Webo Splash - July 22, 2007 04:41 AM (GMT)
Depends. Show us the insert. <_<
Edit: My KT cost 20+ O.o

i liked the insert we got at the gathering...i think its somewhat special since it has kam's signature on it, but i dont think u should trade ur house for it or something...
:EDIT:
heres the insert.. not the best quality, but itll do
frisbee - July 22, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
If you collect pens & rare ps things, it's probably worth it. It's no PDS v1 or anything, maybe not worth a dr. kt, but if you have a kt & dont spin it why not trade?
Kaoru - July 22, 2007 05:21 AM (GMT)
dude its just a piece of paper with a sig so what <_<
ever heard of plastic inserts BAM!!! headshot
pholord - July 22, 2007 05:26 AM (GMT)
Well the signed inserts at the gathering are pretty cool and kam did spend quite a lot of money trying to print them out at fedex kinko's  but its probably unlikely that you will find someone willing to trade their 20 dollars of dr.kt for it

You just dropped the value of the pen by posting the insert.. <_<
And would you trade an insert for a KT? Sure, if you believe in its value, its the same reason why we wont trade $20 for a dollar.
K4S - July 22, 2007 07:02 AM (GMT)
I'd pay more for an insert signed by Eriror or Bonkura to be honest. But that's just me.

I would consider an insert signed by the legend four, most valuable. But nothing i would pay a great amount of money to get really.
KRuq - July 22, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
If I were Kam or other famous spinner I'd sell my signatures.

my bad... :banghead: :banghead:
but hopefully since its such a bad quality anyways, nobody can use it.
neXus - July 22, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
I have my kam signature ... on a card. :P Thank you UED again.
There are 2 kam inserts on PDS btw. one has some marks on it like some tried to explain how inserts roll up and where the visible area stops but its still usable.
RandomNewb - July 22, 2007 10:38 PM (GMT)
2x KT pens, 1 dollar each about
2x Dr. Grip grips and tips, (doesn't matter if you use the grips though I guess), at LEAST 5 bucks each
2x Sailor gel (becuase everyone freaking conforms), about a dollar each too
If you can't get it from someone in US, shipping costs like 4-5 bucks, also you might have to trade your own pens, so we can just say that you pay your own shipping costs.
So yeah, I guess it's about 20 bucks.
The point is kids,
STEAL THE INSERT FROM SOMEONE, USE A HIGH QUALITY SCANNER, FORGE KAM'S SIG, WIN WIN WIN! GG!
Jay kay. Don't be fooled by this silly piece of paper. Your Mom would already be more sad than she is knowing that you just spent 20 dollars on a piece of paper when she's already had to mortgage the house because of all the pens you've bought and how much you just lost due to online gambling. Please. Unchain your pigs and let them run free. ;) Do it for Jesus.
JEB JEB JEB!

Noobs.
platypusvictim9 - July 22, 2007 11:58 PM (GMT)
If I had enough money I would.
faulk - July 23, 2007 03:30 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't spend money for Kam's insert, but I can totally understand why some people do it. What's the point of getting autographed books then? By your logic instead of ONE piece of paper with a signature on it.. it's just maybe 200 pieces of paper in a stack with someone's stupid signature. It probably only costed about 3 bucks to print the entire thing..right?? I mean.. geez why the fuck are Gutenburg bibles sooooo damn expensive? It's just paper!!
No..Basically the extra costs are derived the rarity of the object. The money that you think is being wasted is balanced by the fact that there will NEVER be a lot of Kam signed inserts in the world, but there will always be an endless supply of Dr. KT's.
Hell, why the fuck are DOLLAR BILLS WORTH SO FUCKING MUCH.. They're just paper too!!!
Well, that has little to do with this argument, but the point is you can't discard the value of something by just calling it "a piece of paper."
frisbee - July 23, 2007 04:34 AM (GMT)
I'd just like to point out you could also trade for a dr. kt for about 8 dollars plus shipping... not really a fair trade though.
Webo Splash - July 23, 2007 05:16 AM (GMT)
Let's wait for Kam to see what's on his mind. If you dont want to spend a KT's money worth for an insert designed and signed by a pen spinning veteran, then dont fucking do it. But if you dont really care what people say and you want it, go for it.

kam - July 23, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
Well, I had no idea people would trade my inserts for something valuable (actually I have no idea how much a Dr KT is worth), but I guess these are my thoughts...
First, why would I care what people think about the value of my inserts? I never sold any, and any money you spent on them never reached my pockets. So whether they're worth a $100 dollars or just a couple dollars to print (which is what Kinko's charged for color laser, btw)
With that said, I don't think it's fair to compare my insert (or any insert, for that matter) with a plain piece of paper. There's a lot of creative work and effort put into designing an insert. The time and effort spent is different for each pen, but as I told Tenku, I probably spend a good week or two designing an insert. That's because besides the time previously spent measuring the exact dimensions for the insert, and the distance for the COP, I also want to make sure my inserts will wrap seamlessly, be readable (for text and urls), and of course, look good and match the pen's color.
I also create all my new inserts in 300 dpi, although since the main art is in vector form, it could easily be scalable to higher resolutions for better quality.
But, if you really want to put an actual value to the inserts, this is how it can be calculated.
Take the amount of hours spent on designing it (in my case, it's usually 10~15 hrs to get something I like). Multiply the amount of hours by the hourly rate of that type of job (this is a typical graphic designer's job). A professional graphic designer with little experience should get at $25/hr, so that's already $250. Add to that amount the cost of printing ($5.00 for computer use + $4.00 for printing 2 pages). That's about $260 so far...and let's ignore the fixed cost of your computer and a legal license of Adobe Photoshop (another few hundred).
In other words, if you ignore those other costs, and calculate the costs based on the fact that there are only 20 of those inserts (19 actually, since I messed up my signature on one), then you get $6.50 per insert.
But that's just the basic minimum cost, without considering the fact that usually affects the price of collectible items the most: the fact that's a genuine item from someone you look up to (well, hopefully that's the case, or why else would you spend the money)
So yeah...these are my thoughts.
If I had the money, and had the chance to buy an item from someone I admire...yeah, I would spend the money. But that's not because whatever the product costs that much to product, it's because it relates to someone I admire, and that person has accomplished many things in the past. Buying a collectible item for me, is a way to get a means of inspiration.
But anyways...that's why I think people buy expensive collectible items. I personally am not in the business of making outrageously expensive inserts for profit. But if you value something that much and want to buy it, why not?
I just don't think people should go around trying to impose their own opinions on others. If you don't think my inserts are worth more than a few cents, that's fine. Don't buy them (I'm not selling them anyways). But to go around saying that you can just copy them and forge my signature is just childish and irresponsible (even if it is a joke). FYI, someone has already done something like that, and it instantly killed any respect I had for that person because I believe that anyone who has put serious effort into creating anything should know better about the value of creative work.
Kam
