Title: A Reminder On The Use Of Report
Zombo - July 22, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
Did everybody forget the existence of this feature or what?
WHAT TO DO: When you see a post, click

and follow the instructions.
WHAT NOT DO: Add a spammy or flame post of your own, further cluterring the thread.
If you complain about spam, first do your part and help the moderating team out.
strat1227 - July 22, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
is this really worth doing though? I've never really thought about it, but i guess the reason i never use this is because i never actually see results from this.... not that there are results from my flaming (i admit i do it when annoyed at someone who spams) .... I dont know if what i just said made any sense or not...
Zombo - July 22, 2007 03:16 PM (GMT)
what the hell?
how can you say that? reporting is anonymous, you have no way of knowing how effective it is. And you say you never tried it, then conclude like that? That's just dumb, man.
I can tell you the respond rate for reports is very fast, usually within 30 minutes.
strat1227 - July 22, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
obviously i know its anonymous, and that there's no way for me to know whether its effective... but i guess thats why i rarely use it...
but i guess ill start now
Zombo - July 22, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
you don't use it cuz its anonymous? wtf?
The ADVANTAGE of reporting is that nobody knows you did it!!! So that you can safely report without fear of getting flamed back!
firebird - July 22, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
I think you're misunderstanding strat. He's saying there's no way of gauging the effectiveness of the Report feature because you can't really tell whether the moderator attended to the spam/flame because it was reported it or because he coincidentally signed on and saw the spam/flame himself. This has nothing to do with anonymity.
strat1227 - July 22, 2007 09:06 PM (GMT)
^^ Thanks firebird.... i was really tired this morning, couldnt really express myself the way i wanted to ... it's not about being anonymous, its about visable effectiveness ...
Zombo - July 22, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
well let me tell you it helps us a lot if more people use it (we get like one report every 2 weeks or something).
all I'm saying is people should stop being hypocrite and do their part to stop the spam instead of whining.
we offer the tools, it's now your job to use it.
we're not dumb, ok? why would we offer such feature if we didn't care about the reports being sent? of course it helps.
use it.
strat, if you discredit this feature without even trying it, you will have as much as merit for holding this opinion as people criticizing your interrupted notation without even using it once.
strat1227 - July 22, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
I've said i will begin using it (again, as i did NOT discard it without using it, ive used it several times)
anyway, i had a big rant i was gonna put, but its fairly pointless, so lets just say i'll start using it more often

With the number of moderators, every post is likely to be read at least once by a mod. Reporting a post only draws their attention back to a post they acknowledged as spam/flame but decided not to edit or delete it. True, in certain cases it alerts them as they first log in, but they also need discretion of their own in handling questionable posts in the absence of reports. Maybe they don't personally consider the post as spam/flame themselves, but they need to place themselves in the position of others and decide whether a lot of people would be frustrated by a flagrant insubstantial post.
But obviously it isn't an easy question to answer because the problem is that most people don't seem to mind the spam at all, seeing as they don't use the Report feature. Either that or they're too lazy to use it. I've used it a few times in the past to no avail, maybe because there needs to be a few reports referring to the same post before it is considered; I have no idea. I only know it's extremely frustrating to have your own posts deleted when 90% of the people out there spew out much worse garbage.
But anyway, I seriously thought the majority of the board preferred minimal content and a more MSN-style atmosphere, if the way people post can be used as any indication. This is the main reason I stopped using Report. Remember that as things stand, spam is not forbidden but only discouraged. You as members shaped things this way. So this is why it would be quite hypocritical for these same members to complain about spam, regardless of Report. But Report is still there for those of you who've changed their minds.

Thats the way i like the spammers bin to feel... but people dont seem to realise the difference between the spammers bin and real forums... they just throw in random comments like they would in SB ... it gets rather annoying when you're looking at the serious PS threads...
Im not sure how often you read the serious PS threads, firebird, so im not sure if you know what i mean, but if you open any random thread from a non-SB forum, you'll see at least one or two unnecisary posts...
Like you said, i didnt think using the report feature would do shit, because there are enough mods that at least one would see it... and if it needed to be removed/punished with a warning, it would have been done...
but apparently zombo wants us to report it anyway, and so now i plan to...

the only way this could happen is that the moderator felt your report was unwarranted.
every single report is read and taken care of; no exception.
the report feature is there for a reason, so use it.
the mods do their job, but you will get a faster response if you use report.
Zombo - July 24, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
This is good, we're receiving 3-4 reports per day now, instead of... 0.
Each report has been dealt.
Zombo - July 24, 2007 02:14 PM (GMT)
Clarification: When I say it's anonymous, I really mean that it's private.
Nobody in public will know that you reported, but every mod knows who reported what.
So it's not anonymous to the moderators.
firebird - July 24, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
Aw, fuck that then. I don't want to be known for snitching out people.
Zombo - July 24, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
we don't keep track of it, but sometimes we might respond to your report if you're abusing it or whatever.

Agreed. I used to use it, but when I found out mods could see you snitching. No wai did I use it after then :blaugh:
Zombo - July 24, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
like i said, we don't care who reports what. nothing is leaked to the public.

I'm no snitch.

no, let the Law (us) handle it. Don't deal with it yourself.

There is no law but that of the streets
ShoeMan - July 26, 2007 08:55 AM (GMT)
I guess i'm a snitch then, I'd rather seeing spam/flame getting deleted then adding wood to the fire..
Tim - July 26, 2007 12:05 PM (GMT)
Can we spam in places that don't increase post count?
I don't think taking away will take away the problem. People will always work towards something when it's to do with post count.
Zombo - July 26, 2007 02:10 PM (GMT)
you can spam in the spammer's bin, the idea is that you use that forum for spamming only, so that you keep clean in the other ones.
Dark Angel-REX - July 27, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
Um i recently dont use Report becuz i dont read every single thread.
I dont see much problems in these thread that i look.
