Title: Ultimate Players Thread

frisbee - August 1, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
Yes, now there is a thread for ucpsb's best... If you play ultimate frisbee post in here!

Some things to post:
-Describe the time you skied somebody a foot taller than you
-The nasty layout you made for game point the other day
-How you can throw a full field flick
-How hot your girlfriend is & how she loves a man with a disc

strat1227 - August 1, 2007 09:40 PM (GMT)
I play with my buds, not on a real team or anything....

I love this thread. And you.

1. Now to start this story off... I've got hops. Not to brag, but I do vertical jump conditioning, to where I can jump my highest even at a sprint. So this one time when I was racing for a huck down the field, the next fastest person (next to me) started after it as well. At this point I was thinking "no way am I going to get this. This guy is taller than me. I can't do this." But then I pushed that voice aside and said to myself "fucking bring it!" And in an instant I was up in the air.
It was one of those jumps where you don't think your going to get it, even though you want to believe you do. I out jumped even my own jump.
But, victory aside, and point scored, I collided in the air with him as we were coming down. Though, it didn't determine the outcome of the disc, so the collision was overlooked.

It was epic as fuck.

2. I didn't make one for game point the other day, but I did have a nice one on sunday where I did score. Lets just say that I'm still sore from soaring.

3. I've only thrown a full ultimate field huck three times, that I can count. Twice were pulls. The other time was when I was the only one who committed on a huck by the other team, made the catch / turnover, and then hucked it down the field, from their goal-line, while yelling "UUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHP!!!!!" to my teammates. Of course they caught it, too. haha

4. I don't bother with girlfriends, but the ladies love me. And they love it that I play, as well as they love to watch me play. And I love them.

More to come.

haha, nice joshua.

I had a really technically bad layout the other day... but it was really, really cool lol....

it was a turnover, and someone on my team chunked it down the field and wind got it or something cuz it went way farther than it should've ... I'm not exactly a fast guy so i didnt think i'd make it, but then i just decided to try anyway, and was just absolutly sprinting, like probably the fastest ive ran in a while..... alllmost caught up to it, so i just dove and like swiped it in the air, and the swiping motion caused me to turn a little and i landed on my side and just rolled for at least 15 feet....

was all for nothing tho, cuz i threw it to someone who dropped it in the endzone <_<

Yeah, I hate it when the effort seems like it was for nothing.

Though remember these two things in that situation, if it ever arises again.

1. What is everyone going to remember when the game is over? The other team getting the turnover and making that last point, or you making that crazy fucking layout? You & your layout.
Its always better to see something amazing, or better yet, be part of something amazing during a game of ultimate than to win.

The epic play(er) > the win.

2. Theres no such thing as a bad throw. There are only bad catches.

Aaannnnnd I guess this makes three, but...

3. If you can touch it, you can catch it!

hahaha .... you should see some of the people i play with.... you'd change your mind on that one.....

Joshua - August 2, 2007 02:57 AM (GMT)
Well, I can see that sometimes. I mean, if they are inexperienced at the game, or throwing in general, there can be exceptions. But I think that if a throw comes within 15 feet of you, and you don't catch it --- it was merely a bad catch. :thumb:

frisbee - August 2, 2007 05:57 AM (GMT)
I consider it a missed catch if it was possible for you to get a hand on it or for you to lay out for it... sometimes things really are just impossible, even if theyre close.

I had one of the first practices for fall high school season today, i got the first blood by laying out onto some really hard grass. I got one of those huge bloody spots you get on your side that take forever to heal-true mark of an ultimate player :)

@strat & josh: Do either of you follow club ultimate? I played in club tournament this weekend with part of my high school team & some alumni. We didn't do well fielding 16-20 year olds with 2-3 years experience against 20-30 year olds with 5+ years at higher levels of play, but it was pretty fun. I got to watch some sick teams. Ever heard of new noise, pike, or pony? Watching pike & pony scrimmage was just sick. It's not like it was jam vs sockeye or something like that, but it was the best game ive ever watched.

Joshua - August 6, 2007 10:47 PM (GMT)
No, I haven't played in any tournaments at all. I'd love to, though, and I can't wait to start once I start playing for my university's team.

strat1227 - August 7, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
Im not good enough to do all that... i play for recreation with my friends on thursdays on a baseball field lol...

but i <3 it ....

You're gonna have so much fun. I seriously love tournaments. Just go out & play & have so much fun all day, sit in the shade with your team for 15 minutes, head out & play again, its just so sick.

I didnt throw today  it kinda sucked... I have summer league playoffs wednesday though :D

Joshua - August 7, 2007 04:13 AM (GMT)
I have a welcome back game on Wednesday for my buddy who's coming home from his summer in Alaska. And since I play with a group, and we pick teams before we play, we're all picking him last like hes the new kid.

He has to earn his way back to the top!! haha

frisbee - August 7, 2007 04:22 AM (GMT)
Joshua & strat, you two really should get into competitive ultimate. It might be a shock to you or you might be a natural but either way, it becomes your life.

My love for ultimate knows no bounds. It's been a long time since it was something I do in my spare time, or even a hobby; it's who I am & who I will be for the foreseeable future :)

Joshua - August 7, 2007 04:31 AM (GMT)
Uuuhhhh. I'm not sure if you got me pinned right. I do play competitive ultimate. I've played other kid's teams (who go to tournaments), and I've played tons of highschool through college level players. I know how you feel. :thumb:

I pretty much breathe ultimate:
-have at least 8 discs in my car at all times
-have layout scars
-look to the skies whenever I hear "biscuit", "disc on", or "poll!"

hahahaha

Oh, but on tournaments,

I'm joining IUP's team in the fall, though, so I'll be playing plenty of tournaments.

I don't remember their UPA ranking in last year's college tournament, but I know that they were the best in the region. (Ballin'!)

frisbee - August 7, 2007 04:48 AM (GMT)
My bad, I got the impression you were a pickup player when you said you were planning to join the college team. Did you graduate from high school this year?

http://www2.upa.org/scores/scores.cgi?div=127&page=2

There's the site for UPA rankings. If you go to youth open, my school is ranked #4 nationally. We won high school easterns this year although I didn't play on that team. This year is somewhat of a rebuilding year for us, but we're still looking to win states & place like top 5 at easterns, then win it all again in '09 :)

im a hardcore ulti player like rest of u

i play for a high school team but most of u r playing at a higher lvl and r very competitive

ive had lotsa layout catches and d's but im not very good at skying. i love 2 layout thats y i play defence most of the time

where do y'all play

btw if u ever play ubc find #91 jon hayduk hes my coach :walrus:

btw wut positions do y'all play

i was put on the team as a cutter but the coach found out that i can throw (even though i cant) so i handle for quite a bit even though i h8 handling im a runner so i should b cutting. i play on the defensive line but im training so that i can play defense when i get 2 college
