Title: Anyball Retractable Mx Add On
Description: tutorial for new retractable mechanism

pholord - August 8, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
Ok this tutorial is for making the retractable part for my new mod, The Anyball Retractable MX(ARMX):

The mechanism can be added to any MX you already have because it does not alter the MX body in any way (except for cutting the rsvp tip to allow the inktube to come out) Basically it replaces the rsvp cap in an mx. It requires NO shaving or glueing. The only part that needs to be cut is the rsvp cap.
You will be making this:

Materials:
-1 rsvp cap
-1 anyball/profile back part (the whole retractable part that you can screw off)
-1 rsvp grip
FOR INKTUBE:
-1 anyball spring
-1 toothpick
-1 hgg backplug (can be replaced by any piece that will plug the hole in the anyball retractable part)
-some TAPE

Ok here we go
1. cut the rsvp cap before the squiggly part so you have a nice cylinder
user posted image
2. You should have these if you wrap a little tape around the clicker part it will make the mod silent

Now position the pieces the way they are in the picture and push it all together(hardest part)
ADDED: before putting it together, you may want to cut off .5cm off the rsvp grip if you want the mechanism to fit down more on the rsvp back cap. Even if you only have half an rsvp grip you should still be able to make this mod.
user posted image
Your rsvp grip should end up covering the threads of the anyball part and roughly half of the other side of the rsvp grip should be in the cap. Because of the force needed to push this all together it is very sturdy (and very difficult to take apart)
(see pic at the beginning)
Now if you havent figured out how to make the inktube yet heres how:
user posted image
Cut 1 cm off back of ink tube to prevent back cap from interfering. Crimp spring at about the area where it says USA on the ink tube. Stick the toothpick in the ink tube to extend it. Place hgg plug over toothpick to prevent it from falling through the hole in the anyball part.
Now just put the retractable part over the rsvp back plug like a regular cap and stick it all on your favorite MX but dont forget to cut the rsvp ip or the ink tube cant come out!

good job pho

K4S - August 8, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
Pretty clever, kudos :)

CPC - August 8, 2007 07:57 PM (GMT)
Nice add on I'll try when I get home cause I want to feel how it spins.

nateiskewl - August 8, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
I don't wanna waste an RSVP cap, are there any substitutes?

ShortAssassin - August 8, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
Nice Pho, how stable is the back part though?

zepiroth76 - August 8, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
How long is the toothpick?

pholord - August 8, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
The whole mod is very stable. The weakest part of the connection is where the cap goes over the rsvp back capbut as long as you thicken the back cap and push the cap down hard its stable. The rest of the mod is so stable that Ive been unable to take it part (thats probably a con right there  )

The toothpick measures about 3.5 cm. It may be shorter or longer because theres no exact measuremeants for the back part ( it all depends on how much you've pushed everything together) Unless your afraid of wasting toothpicks, this shouldnt be too big a deal.

CPC - August 8, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
can you go into a little more detail about crimping the spring to make it stay in place?

pholord - August 9, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
Just take pliers and pinch the inktube and the end of the spring at the place where it says USA on the inktube. Squeezing it hard should make the spring stay in place. If not, use tape or something to thicken the inktube.

AlmightyMalachi - August 9, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
clever, nice job dude

This looks like it would move the COP even farther to the back of the pen. :shake:

pholord - August 9, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
Actually the point of balance is closer to the COP than an MX cause the back is a little lighter than the rsvp cap, not by much tho. And theres always the option of using a signo tip.

ADDED video to add on an MX and spinability

ShortAssassin - August 9, 2007 12:10 PM (GMT)
Sexy, Ima make one tonight.

Dr1v37h38u5 - August 9, 2007 11:43 PM (GMT)
nice one!

one problem:

the RSVP cap section will continue to stretch and stretch until it's all crackly and stuff. the plastic used in the caps doesn't hold up well to constant pressure.

i'll probably make one eventually.

.:iamk34n3Xx:. - August 12, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
yea..pholord came over to my house today and i made two lol.. it spins really well for some reason..im not that good at spinning mx's but for some reason i can spin this really well..

KJ-598 - August 12, 2007 12:36 AM (GMT)
Nice pen! I think I am going to mod it l:p

JDzzz - August 12, 2007 03:21 AM (GMT)
I have No toothpicks, i cut the cap n such but iam having trouble finding something to add length.

Couldn't you simply sand down the threads on the anyball section so that it isnt such a tight fit into the cap section? I havent made one yet but i assume this would prevent the cap section from cracking.

CheeseLord - August 12, 2007 03:41 AM (GMT)
Ooohhh.. nice pen.

Is the back of a Papermate Profile the same as an Anyball, or is the only identical part the grip? My parents won't let me order pens online, and I live in the US.

AzNwAr3oR - August 12, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
They're the same.

CheeseLord - August 12, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
Ok, thanks, I'm going to look for some Profiles soon.

Drazer - August 12, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
how do you get the RSVP back to stay on the toothpick? can't reallly see it

pholord - August 13, 2007 12:00 AM (GMT)
The toothpick just goes through the hole in the back cap that you would drill for a normal mx. It extends the ink tube so it can reach the retractable mechanism.

Awesome tutorial! Used a profile grip to cover up the broken clip part on the clicker. Still need an insert though :\

.:iamk34n3Xx:. - August 13, 2007 05:56 AM (GMT)
if you use a signo tip, the cog should be a bit more top heavy than the MX but if you use a hgg tip or somthing..it might be the same

pholord - August 13, 2007 06:19 AM (GMT)
Nice one Edge! Its nice to see someone else make this mod successfully and itll look sick with an insert. I didnt put anyball on the back of mine cause I thought it looked a little bulky but your actually looks really nice.

JooJoo - August 13, 2007 06:33 AM (GMT)
I must say pholord, this thing kicks ass. Its a simple mod (except for the pushing!) and it spins very well. heres mine.

Does this mod also work with signo tips?

Actually, when I measured mine without the profile grip at the end the CoG was dead center. Pen being 19 cm and CoG at 9.5 cm.

pholord - August 13, 2007 07:22 PM (GMT)
Yes as I said earlier, the retractable mechansim weighs less than a normal rsvp cap with the grip inside, making this mod more balanced than an mx even if you use an hgg tip. A signo tip will make the mod quite front heavy unless you add a lot of anyball grips to the back

theipodpeople - August 15, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
Nice mod. I made one of these in pretty much the same way a while ago, but mine was an extended. I think its in a forum post somewhere around here.

Pearl - August 17, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
Holy crap

I've just made one

This pwns

pholord - August 17, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
This mod was intended to spin like an mx if not better because improved balance from the reduced weight in the back. And of course its retractable.

The 'cracking rsvp cap' problem that was stated earlier does not seem to be that big of a problem. The only place where this occurs is where the cap goes over the rsvp back cap, as would happen in a normal mx if you applied tape on the back cap to make the rsvp fit tighter. I think the reason it doesn't occur at the union between the anyball part and the cap is because of the rsvp grip between them. The first ARMX (anyball retractable mx, the name Ive chosen for this mod) is still holding up fine.

hakkar - August 19, 2007 12:37 PM (GMT)
thanks for this mod, i love it ;>

here's mine (added some anyball grips):

What can be used to substitute the hgg part in the back? I've never had one so I don't know what it looks like, thanks in advance.

pholord - August 19, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
the hgg back plug is just used to stop the tooth pick from going through that hole in the anyball mechanism. You can use any plug that will fit or just use some paper or tape and wad it up to act as a plug.

platypusvictim9 - August 19, 2007 10:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah, thanks, I think I got it working now, sweet mod dude.

k2thez - August 20, 2007 08:17 PM (GMT)
I'm having trouble with the retracting part. I click it, and it's stuck for a few seconds, then it's fine. When I retract it, I click, and it doesn't go back in.

CPC - August 20, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
Toothpick substitue:

Instead of using a toothpick you can drill a hole in the cap big enough for the inktube to go throuh it. Then cut a piece of inktube the same length as the toothpick. Tape the piece of inktube you cut to the other inktube. So the inktube is now extended and it goes directly into the anyball piece. You might have to use something like the hgg plug or something else to keep the inktube from going up into the click part. I used that technique on my RSVP Type C mod and it works good.

pholord - August 21, 2007 04:03 AM (GMT)
@k2thez, Make sure uve cut 1 cm off the rsvp inktube or modify the back cap like CPC said or else it will interfere with the retracting. If this is not the case, you may want to change the length of your toothpick or check the spring. Depending on how far you have pushed everything together and how far you pushed it on the back cap the length of the mod will vary.

If you extend the inktube the way CPC did it I dont think you will have to use the hgg back plug.
