Title: Reporting
Description: I told this once to Zombo

Dark Angel-REX - August 12, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
I said this once to Zombo. I think i know whats wrong with UCPSB.
I think Zombo understood what i said, but i wanted to tell everyone.

Moderators. Especially Zombo, when once he said use the Report Feature. Moderators and Admins are there to secure forum if something wrong goes on. In most forums, there's no such thing as report feature, and no admin and mods tells the member "I think someone is forgetting the reason why Report Feature exist. USE IT" But this forum does. NO OFFENSE WHATSOEVER to Zombo, but he is the admin/mod, therefore, he should be able to secure this forum himself if no one uses the Report Feature or most of other mods goes to vacation. Zombo said the reason he wanted people to use Report was because most mods were in vacation, but that would only sound like an excuse.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Zombo, don't be offended. I'm never gonna say you shouldn't be a mod or admin. im just giving some criticism toward you.

Im also not saying that Report Feature should be gone. Report Feature could be useful when a person feel that there's a spam that annoys them or something.
Now about Report Feature. I think we need them for reporting spam post and unnessacery posts. But i'm not sure it should be used for EVERYTHING.

There might be times that Report Feature shouldn't be used.

I'm a Super Mod in another forum (it's almost dying though lol) when it used to have 37 active members. I once had a problem when a guy#1 was offending other guy#2. I thought this was big problem i PMed him about things he did. Of course, i asked Admin to suspend him for while, and until the Admin reads the PM, Guy#1 was like arguing quite a lot when i said i would suspend him. As a result, Guy#1 was agreed by admins and mods to be suspended for a week. When guy#1 came back, i got quite a lot of flaming over PM that i reported to Admin that if he send anything once more to me, he would be banned. the guy#1 was REALLY REALLY mad now, his attitude was the worst i ever seen in my life. One month later, he really crossed the line. Guy#1 was offending Guy#2 even harder than before. I actually decided to post on that thread about things he was doing. other members joined with the discussion, the admin did, and found out what was the misunderstanding and what happened in his mind. We talked over 2 days, and Guy#1 was able to go with only a warning instead of a ban. Guy#1 was happy with the punishment, and nothing wrong went on later on with this guy that i was able to forget to keep eye on him.

Flaming usually happen out of misunderstanding. Discussing in public with many other member might solve huge deal of problems.

So i think in these cases, Report feature shouldn't be used. Admins and Moderators decide punishment, but since their decision is like "formal" (lack of better word) they sometime come out with unnecessarily strict punishment. leading to members going mad.

So this is what i think about Report Feature and bad thing about Moderators who rely on their thoughts only. Maybe take decision by the normal member could be good.

This is only my opinion.

Zombo, i said this once to u. i'm not trying to offend u, and yes i said this like 2 week ago. i jsut forgot to post it. forgive me

didn't I tell if you only used it for reporting spam it would be fine? and you said, oh ok.

Dark Angel-REX - August 12, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Yes zombo, but im saying to everyone. just to see what they think

Eburt - August 12, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
First off, Zombo can't be expected to patrol the entire board all the time. He does hve a life you know. For example, I've been sick so I haven't been on UCPSB for about 24 hours... Don't you think the same things happen to Zombo?

Second, it is a moderators job to deal with flaming, spam and other innapropriate posts. The use of report alerts us to such posts quicker. As for dealing with members flaming... well, I guess a member may have a better idea of how to handle it, we never claimed to be perfect. Problem is, we can't always ask public oppinion and such. Besides the more people who are involved, the more likely more flaming will occur.

That said a lot of times such problems are dealt with by discussion and warnings. We almost never ban/suspend people without a pretty good reason.

There are like 10 moderators, or about 10 members who have moderating powers. I'm sure they can secure the board between themselves, or let's hope so at least.

The report feature is meant for spam more than flaming, because spam is where mods are uncertain as to whether members love it or hate it.

Zombo - August 12, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
I told you already not all mods are on "patrol" duty.

If you include only those moderators, you have 5+1/2, 1/2 being turbturtle.

many mods have obtained their rank either by honorific (nigel, tohlz, kaisen) or through other means (rockstargames)

I really don't get what you are trying to point out. Surely, there aren't great misunderstandings that are happening now, is there?

faulk - August 15, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
You have this uncanny knack for pointing out problems that have no relevance. I havn't seen any big report misunderstandings like yours. And if there's a flame war going on, you can bet your ass the mods have seen it.

Rockstargames - August 15, 2007 12:33 PM (GMT)
Everything Eburt said, I agree with.

strat1227 - August 15, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
is it just me or do all of REX's posts have to do with either
A) Sex
or
B ) Problems with UCPSB ....

well, seem that this is impossible so its time for this thread to end before it degrades into flaming... oh wait, little late.
