Title: Musical Ability

Expound on your selections.

I have pretty good absolute pitch. I can produce a tone on command, but I have trouble quickly identifying a tone that I hear.

I also have excellent relative pitch. If I think about it, I can figure out how to play most music just by listening to it.

I know a lot of people on here are musicians, so it got me wondering about this.

Your words mean nothing to me you crazy bastard!

You're missing the option "I hate the Red Wings"

Wtf is up with the replies...

During my piano exam, the examiner played a passage and I had to play it back by ear, which I was able to do. But he told me the key. If he didn't, I would have been able to play it back in a different key. So I suppose I possess relative pitch.

I also have some absolute pitch, depending on the key. For example, I can recognize C major and A minor easily.

not good with absolute pitch, need my piano to figure out the scale. Once I got it, figuring the melody becomes pretty easy (meaning good relative)

i have relative pitch but i'm not crazy like the ones here that actually plays, it takes me time to playback tunes.. trial and error ya know..

Just relative.

A little relative

How about perfect pitch?

I gots some relative pitch. I can work out a slow piano piece by listening by ear (usually), but not work out melodies on other instruments very well. <_<

I'm not musical in the slightest, but I have a friend who can listen to a song for the first time & start playing along on the guitar before its over

that's actually fairly easy if the song revolves around a bunch of chords... both my guitarists can do that.

You OWN guitarists? Haha.

Anyway, I have pretty good relative pitch. I have the same deal w/ my piano exam and the examiner told me to play a melody but she told me the key also. Hm, most people have relative pitch, 'cause it's easier x_x Does anyone know any real excercises to develop your absolute or 'perfect' pitch?

Yup, I'm developing absolute pitch right now to play my theremin. Tons of sites out there... Google.

I knew this kid that could hear every note on the piano and know every note in a chord. So insane.

That's true perfect pitch (should be able to identify the key of the music too). I actually wrote to a science magazine about true perfect pitch, they replied by saying only around 1 in 10 000 people have it. The only person I ever met with it was my high school music teacher, who was an ex-jazz band player.
