Title: Haggle - Trading Game
Description: Sign-Ups Closed!!!

Eburt - August 20, 2007 12:40 AM (GMT)
KK, guess I'm still doing it...

This thread is sign-up only. I'm fairly flexible in the amount of players we get, but I'm thinking about 12 should be good. Less is also alright, but it'll be less interesting. These rules explain fairly well, so I'll just quote them for you:

QUOTE
In this game, players possess tokens, which are represented by emoticons. Each type of token possess a certain value. How valuable those tokens is governed by a set of rules, which is unknown to the players.

At the beginning of the game, each player is assigned tokens of different types. They are also given a partial list of rules, we call those "rule slips". The moderator must ensure that all rules of the game are uniformly distributed to different players, and that the value of the starting hands is roughly equal.

The main part of game is then having the players engage in "trading", trying to exchange tokens to other players in order to gain a higher score total according to what they know of the rules.

Rules can also be included in trades. There are two types of such trade. If you "own" a rule (you have that rule's slip), you can trade ownership of the rule to another player. The moderator will then PM that player with a truthful description of that rule. However, players can also trade "knowledge" of a rule. In that case, the player claiming to have knowledge of a rule directly PMs the other player about what he knows of that rule.

And so, only people with a rule slip can trade ownership of that rule, while anybody can trade knowledge of any rule. But be aware that only ownership will ensure true knowledge of the actual rule.

Once the trading is over (usually set as one week), the players hand in whatever tokens they have. The moderator then reveals all the rules and compute the score of each player according to the tokens they have.

The player with the highest score wins.

There will be some more specific rules put into place once the game starts, but for now that should give you an idea of how to play. This sign-up will be open for 24 hours minimum or until we get enough players. The game itself should last 1 week from the start which will be in a few days. Please don't sign up if you don't have the time/commitment.

To sign up, please make sure this is in your post. If I'm not sure, I will assume you are not playing:

hmm... why are you the one doing it? isn't it strat?

/in

btw remove the line where I say "Tokens, represented by emoticons". That's not true, tokens can be anything.

For example, we could be trading, rsvps, comssas, and uniball grips.

true Zombo, but I like the idea of emoticons... makes it more interesting to put everyone in the dark.

I was unaware Strat was planning to do this, I posted that I was planning to. If he still wants to, he's welcome to either help me, make round 2, or even start a second game going at the same time, but that could get very confusing.

Zombo - August 20, 2007 01:22 AM (GMT)
well are you aware of the type of rules such a game may contain? it goes beyond the usual " :) is worth 3 points".

I've "taught" strat on how to make good haggle games, I'm not sure if you grasp the concept.

BTW emoticons are confusing IMO. More interesting to use PS theme.

Eburt - August 20, 2007 01:25 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I did some reaserch. I also considered joining MafiaScum. Thats where you got most of these games isn't it?

I'll consider a PS theme, its just that emotes are simple and cool. Actually... I have an idea that might mke this very interesting. Thanks for indirectly helping Zombo. :P I'll have to talk with Strat though...

Zombo - August 20, 2007 01:27 AM (GMT)
there are some subtleties in the game thats not always clear.

For example, did you know that after the trading period ends, people have to submit their "packet", which is the tokens they want to be evaluted.

You don't have to submit everything you got (sometimes it's not preferable due to certain rules).

Eburt - August 20, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
Yes, I was aware, and already planning on utilizing such rules :P

Edit: P.S. rookee, was that supposed to be bold?

rookee - August 20, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
Yeh, sry.

Zombo - August 20, 2007 01:36 AM (GMT)
knowledge trade vs rule slip trade, all clear?

make sure the starting hands (tokens and slips distribution) are fair.

my suggestion is not to have too many types of tokens. Too confusing for a first game.

Zombo - August 20, 2007 01:40 AM (GMT)
its better if you play in this one, cuz otherwise we wont have enough players.

Eburt - August 20, 2007 01:57 AM (GMT)
Ok, important update:

Strat will be taking over this game

He wanted to do it and had everything set up, so I'll let him take over... not sure what he wants to do for signups/time but for now I'll let him hijack this thread.

And with that /in assuming he'll use this.

Awwwww yeaaaaaa

Zombo - August 20, 2007 02:35 AM (GMT)
ah btw, if you're not active when you play this game, it's your loss. It's an invididual game, and the only way to get a good score is to actively trade to try and rip off others and know new rules. So if you don't play, it's your loss.

Lord Michael Davis - August 20, 2007 02:40 AM (GMT)
How many tokens we gonna have? Like 10?

i recommend x rules (this is almost always respected) LESS THAN x types of tokens (depends largely on the theme and complexity of the rules, I think 2/3X is good) and x starting tokens, where x is the number of players signed up.

then i'm in

Zombo - August 20, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
how many ppl u got now? 9? that's good enough i think.

Eburt - August 20, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
9, so far. I kinda want an even number... but thats more like my pseudo OCD than for any reason. I'm gonna start drafting rules though... but theres still 3 slots open f anyone wants them.

ShortAssassin - August 20, 2007 08:17 PM (GMT)
Kasra if you are going to Hawaii on the 26th that's already less then a week from today, and the game hasn't even started.

kasra12321 - August 20, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
yea, but i can play a littl ehtere if there is wireless internet.

Eburt - August 20, 2007 08:36 PM (GMT)
eh its really up to you... I mean nice thing about this game is that you don't have to play the entire time. If you're happy with what you've traded for you can just stop trading... However it probably won't really get started till tomorrow, so you will have limited time. The beginning is the most important part of the game though.

Still looking for a few more people...

rookee - August 20, 2007 08:37 PM (GMT)
9 is fine.

Eburt - August 20, 2007 08:54 PM (GMT)
Flip is added. Sign-ups are now closed.

You may still use this thread to ask questions about the game and discuss, however a new thread will be put up once the game starts. Expect the game to start by midnight EST (-5 GMT) tonight. Probably a few hours sooner.

Good luck to all!

Zombo - August 20, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
kasra im trading you knowledge of my 2 rule slips for ownership of one of your rule slips

SA, all your tokens are belong to me.

ShortAssassin - August 20, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
Man, I'm gonna have a tough time then.

Zombo - August 20, 2007 08:59 PM (GMT)
I'm trading UCPSB moderating powers for ownership of all rules

Eburt - August 20, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
lol Zombo... what if I only give you 1 rules slip?! nah, I think it will be 2/person

and yeah, making trades already might not be the best idea :P

ShortAssassin - August 20, 2007 09:02 PM (GMT)
Deal Zombo :)
