Title: Rubberband

Einar - February 13, 2006 01:24 PM (GMT)
Im intrested in learning rubber band manipulation.
Both magic tricks and to form the rupperband to difrent shapes..

Anyone who is doing this?
If you have any links to sites about this please post it here ^^

killsburydohboy - February 13, 2006 08:20 PM (GMT)
Yahu does it, and I think Kam was trying it out a bit. I can make a star out of it, I'll look for the link to that, I seem to have lost it.

Edit- Here's the link http://www.pentrix.com/kam/tutorials/rubbe...singlestar.html

kebaan - February 14, 2006 06:52 AM (GMT)
i can make a star and a double star.. cant remember the link though :S .. ill see if i can find it when i get home ;) im in school atm.

Einar - February 14, 2006 11:45 AM (GMT)
Ok. thx. The star kam did was the only one i found before i asked here xD.

kebaan - February 14, 2006 03:08 PM (GMT)
Kam wrote alot about it here, http://www.pentrix.com/upsb2/viewtopic.php...ght=rubber+band, so you can read alot about it there.. and the link to the double star: http://www.lovsky.com/doublestar/index.html.. now you just have to practice.. and if you find other tuts please tell them :)

Leviathan - February 15, 2006 04:28 AM (GMT)
Hey, thanks for the links. I can do the single star and double star now. Now I'm trying to figure out how to make a star with one hand.

H-J - February 16, 2006 02:22 PM (GMT)
I can only do a star....
but everybody in my class think it is really cool

Eso - February 16, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
Hm, my dad showed me some tricks when I was very young. The only things I know how to do are star, double star, and a house.

I don't know if there's instructions for a house, but it's almost the same as the double star. Instead of twisting the band near the end for the double star effect, you just pull straight through and let go of index finger, which would originally be the double star's outer star's top point. And there you have a house.

Mrvile - February 16, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
When I was in China a few summers ago my cousins showed me how to make the star and double star, which I can do in my sleep. Everytime I find a rubber band at school I make stars and stuff and my friends all think it's quite nerdy :D :D

My cousins also taught me a lot of "cats cradle" type manipulations with a ring of thread or string and I can make a fly, a mosquito, and a fish. I used to be able to make a sunrise and mountains but I forgot those.

killsburydohboy - February 16, 2006 11:33 PM (GMT)
Mrvile, wanna post some tuts to those? Those sound awesome, can you do em with a rubber band?

Leviathan - February 16, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
So I've been messing around some and I made a star with one hand, but it takes a lot of steps. I found a much easier way to make a one handed star, but the rubber band isn't completely intertwined with all 5 fingers.
I have 2 ways to make the Star of David(6 pointed star). One is two handed and the other is with one or two hands.
I'm trying to make other shapes, but I haven't gotten much.

Leviathan - February 21, 2006 11:23 PM (GMT)
I made a shape. I call it the boomerang. Does anyone want to know how to make it? It's pretty easy to make.

killsburydohboy - February 21, 2006 11:51 PM (GMT)
Sure, I'll learn, as long as you post a tut, and if you wanna post some tutorials of any other shapes you can make besides the stars, it'd be appreciated.

Leviathan - February 22, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
I don't have my camera with me right now, but I'll put up some pics tomorrow. I'll try my best to explain it without pics.

(written from left hand perspective)
Put band around thumb, index and ring fingers. The middle and pinky are out of the way. The band should look like a triangle.
Take the band at the thumb corner and twist it 360 degrees clockwise, then put it back on the thumb.
Go under the strap connecting the thumb and index, and grab the strap between the thumb and ring.
Pull it, then pull it over the thumb index strap and hook it on the ring finger. And you're done.

Sorry if it's unclear.

EDIT:

Here's a video, too.

You can do it one handed, I'm just trying to find an easy way.

It's not much, but oh well.

xz64 - February 22, 2006 02:11 AM (GMT)
I like the rubber band manip where you fold paper and shoot with a rubber band!
They are good dart substitutes.

Mrvile - March 1, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
Eh...I'll try to make a tut (hard to take pics when you're using both hands...) when I have time. I don't think I can do them with a rubber band though (it requires a lot of string).

KosiarZ - April 15, 2006 06:28 PM (GMT)
Tried it? The only tutorial online that I've found is Kam's, single star. Very easy to learn. I can also do the crystal, a shape by me, I created it by accident when I was like, 6 xP Looks somewhat nice, I'll probably make a tutorial somewhen.

There is also a rather well-known double star, and a single-handed star... Does anyone know how to do them?

kam - May 15, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the nice tutorial Leviathan. It wasn't hard at all following your instructions :)

I was able to do it one-handed too, but there's probably a way to do it with really fast. We just have to minimize/eliminate that first 360 twist somehow. That's what usually gets me stuck.

I'm very interested in seeing what other shapes you can do witha rubberband, so any pictures or descriptions are greatly appreciated.

As far as 5-sided stars go, you can do them in several different ways...here are some:

Two Handed Single Star
Two Handed Double Star
One Handed Single Star
One Handed Double Star
-- all 4 above using the same formation steps --
Speed One Handed Single Star (at least two different methods, by Yahu and myself)

There's also a simple shape (I forgot the name) where you interlace the rubberband on all your fingers. This move is so simple, yet can be done extremely fast, so it's quite impressive to laymen.

Toast - May 15, 2006 08:30 PM (GMT)
since god (literally  ) brought this thread back form the dead, i saw soem realkly kool stuff!

i could onyl do star b4, but now i can do double w00t. but only on my left, not my right for soemr eason O_o

also, on a complelty different subnject, i once tied my rubber band around my pen and i was able to do some sonics without moving my fingers

im gonna try to make some automatic wipers B)

elliot - May 17, 2006 02:05 PM (GMT)
Kam do you have any tutorials (or anyone else for that matter) for one handed stars or the quick variations of the one handed star.

Unless the one handed versions are just the same as the two handed, but a lot harder :P

kam - May 17, 2006 05:19 PM (GMT)
I don't think there are any tutorials as of this time...Besides Yahu and I, I don't think many people have bothered learning how to do one handed stars (I could be wrong though, just never heard of other people).

The one handed stars I do are basically adaptations of the two handed stars, but done with one hand.

You basically have to substitute fingers and use all 5 fingers to hold the finished star. One important tip about doing one handed shapes is that you may not have enough fingers to hold all the strings as you would with two hands. What do you do to solve that? You hold multiple strings in the same finger temporarily, then release them after you've accomplished what you needed. It may look very messy and require extra steps, but in order to do the shape one handed, I think that's an acceptable sacrifice.

The stars have too many steps (6 for the single star, 20+ for double star) and its really hard to explain without pictures, so I'll leave them for when I have time to make the tutorials.

There are, however, many ways to accomplish the same shape, so if you play around, you might even come up with better methods than the ones I came up with.

I though that was called the Interlace? lol

but yeah, rubber band manip is awesome, hopefully by the end of september i'll have a video for you, but i don't have a camera to show you guys my stuff yet. when i do, i'll post some tutorials and just some fun tricks for you guys.

Leviathan - May 18, 2006 10:30 PM (GMT)
Yes, please do. I used to be really interested in this, but I lost interest because it's underdeveloped and I can't think up much stuff on my own.

ShoeMan - May 27, 2006 02:11 PM (GMT)

xz64 - May 27, 2006 02:53 PM (GMT)
wow I didn't know you were left handed!
Thanks for sharing this :)

Hrwa - May 27, 2006 03:08 PM (GMT)
Nice, I have to learn this.

Great music btw :P

Leviathan - May 27, 2006 04:29 PM (GMT)
I'm not left handed, but I use my left hand for rubber band manipulation.

yea me too!

actually ive found out that there is no weaker arm in rubber band manip..
both my hands can do the same..

btw i'm working on one handed house my method is kinda hard and i didnt nail it yet..
but my rubber band snapped (not the one on the star video, a bigger one) so I cant practice it,,

I love the little "open-close-open-close" thing you did at the end.

Im gonna give this a try...

yessir - May 27, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
haha nice i didnt noe u could do it like that

well i do mine like this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZQHjgBWPeOs

i hope dis other version help :P

yahu - May 30, 2006 05:53 PM (GMT)
both good, but not quite as fast or even as my method. i wish i had a camera to show you guys my stuff!

lol yea i can do it preety fast too ...i just didnt cuz first of all my stupid cam sux ..and i did it slow cuz i thought ppl wanted to see it slow so they can learn it lol just saying

yahu - May 31, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
maybe you don't understand. my star forms in less than a second. about .5 seconds usually. .7 if i mess up, lol

RippDrive - May 31, 2006 11:42 PM (GMT)
What kind of setup is required to do that?

Mr-Llama - September 17, 2006 09:19 PM (GMT)
okay so with the single handed star i haven't found a video/tutorial yet. i've seen the two handed one but not the single or the .5 second one yahu has talked of.

but recently i was in church and i was messing around then i looked down and i had made a star. after much unwinding i discovered a way that makes a star one handed-ly but i'm not sure if it's already been made or not.

I'm trying to get my webcam hooked up then i'll post a video if i don't have to leave for church right now.

but does anyone have a link to the other one handed methods?

Edit:
here we are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7rvSHd_a88

kohai - September 17, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
hehe i know that too  i learned it... uuuhhh i dont remember LOL

kensai - September 18, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
I can do double-star with 2 hands (leftover skill from childhood days), but I don't have a webcam. <_<

m3hm3h - September 18, 2006 10:54 AM (GMT)
i donno what's the actual name of the trick, but i know the trick where you mysteriously separate 2 rubber bands from an originally interlinked position.

darkinertia - September 19, 2006 03:29 AM (GMT)
am i the only one that thinks this is stupid? :banghead:
