It seems when you look at religion, it was borne out of mankind's early need for leaders to have control over the people (before government ideas were established), and also out of man's fear of death. Most religions claim that something good will come after death, aiding man's worst fear. Most religions claim if you are good in life (helpful to those trying to lead the early populous), you will go to this good place. It also establishes a common order, kind of like government does now.
One could argue the need for religion is gone now we have government, and you can see in many places in the world where religion and government are clashing because they are essentially trying to achieve the same goal and do not work well together.

Well the problem with that, you still don't know. You just have a good gut feeling about it :P

Religion was a way that countries could tax people, but not really call it taxing. Everyone was expected to donate to the church in Europe. Many other suspicions also were believed in the medieval times, and they were proved wrong during the Scientific Revolution. During the Scientific Revolution, people sought reason and proof more than just plain belief. Man created religious beliefs, and now they aren't able to be proved false, but if you relate the suspicions of the same people that strongly believed in religion during the 1500s, you can see, they are linked. There was just no proof that God didn't exist, and there's no way we could prove that.
