Title: Crazy News Story
firebird - August 30, 2007 04:00 AM (GMT)
http://www.thestar.com/article/250512For those in Canada, especially BC, you may have already heard about this. What's shocking is the amount of damage the truck driver did. It's almost as if in panic he accelerated instead of hitting the brakes. He
was climbing a hill, which meant at the crest, his speed should have been slower.
6 killed, 17 injured
"Men, women and children were scattered down a 2-metre-deep ditch and some were pinned underneath the pickup." :dunno:
At 71 your reflexes are less acute, but for them to be that dull ...

A 13 year old died...
The family was basically jaywalking right?
UnEmploymentDude - August 30, 2007 04:11 AM (GMT)
You Canadians yield for pedestrians right?

seriously, whats wrong in the world today.
awkwardO7Z - August 30, 2007 04:14 AM (GMT)
Yes, but they still should be cautious... especially with traveling with such young kids.
I am very against jaywalking personally...My friends do it all the time, but I always walk the extra fifty meters to get to the stoplights.
Rekkuuzan - August 30, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
Ugh, I hate it when things like this happen so nearby.
Among the the injured, one was 7 months old? Egh.

yeah. My friend was also jaywalking, (which i also hate) and he got hit by a car. and i saw it happen in front of my eyes. scary. the funny part, his name was jay.
awkwardO7Z - August 30, 2007 04:34 AM (GMT)
Accidents happen...
But 6 people dying? A small parade (including infants) jaywalking in pitch dark is a different situation...
Ridiculous....
EDIT-lol kasra, there is nothing funny about a friend getting hit by a car :teach: .

Damn, that really is... heartbreaking.
Strange, we had a truck hit a 14 year old kid on his bike today or yesturday.
K4S - August 30, 2007 05:40 AM (GMT)
This is exactly why i'd love to see annual driving exams for persons over the the age of 60. God damn old drivers either going half the speed limit or plowing through people.

Classy, when some of your own family are dying, you still have time to beat the shit out of someone! :blaugh:
Zombo - August 30, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
the driver was drunk no? explains a lot.
P0T4T0 - August 30, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
theres nothing funny about taht, lord micheal davis,
and it is our laziness that killed all those ppl
we were too lazy to walk to the street lights...
and we invented the car cuz we dint want to walk...
so be responsible drivers and walkers.
rookee - August 30, 2007 04:02 PM (GMT)
Uhh, no... laziness doesn't kill people. Events occur, and we can't control that, it's part of life.
firebird - August 30, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
Zombo, he wasn't drunk.
They weren't jaywalking in the sense that they were crossing the street. I think they were strolling along one side in a line, which is why they ended up scattered in ditches. They were probably walking up the hill on the side of opposing traffic. Not a smart thing to do, because they are hidden by the hill and traffic doesn't see them until the last second. Plus, it's also very dark. From the picture, you can tell it's a road without streetlights; one of those longer country roads.
Eburt - August 30, 2007 04:49 PM (GMT)
Eh, well that kinda sucks. It is a shame that a simple avoidable accident caused so much pain.
And Firebird, I dunno about in Canada, but in the US they tell us to walk opposing traffic, though I'm not really sure what the logic there is.
rookee - August 30, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
Would you rather walk towards a car and be able to see it coming at you or get hit blindly?
firebird - August 30, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
Yeah normally you do walk on the opposing side, but not when you're walking up a hill, because if you're near the top, you give the driver almost no time to react as they crest it. Plus, walkers who walk at night on a street with no sidewalks should be wearing something reflective or one of those flashing laser lights.
rookee - August 30, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
The thing is, you're always supposed to drive really slow up and down hills.
