Title: Canada's Gold Cup roster released

Rudi - June 22, 2009 06:55 PM (GMT)
From here.

1- G- Greg Sutton | unattached / sans club
2- D- Adrian Cann | DEN / Esbjerg fB
3- D/M- Mike Klukowski | BEL / Club Brugge KV
4- D- André Hainault | USA / Houston Dynamo
6- M- Julian de Guzman | ESP / Deportivo La Coruna
5- D/F- Kevin McKenna | GER / 1. FC Köln
7- D/M- Paul Stalteri | GER / Borussia Mönchengladbach
8- M- Marcel de Jong | NED / Roda JC
9- F- Ali Gerba | unattached / sans club
10- M/F- Willi Johnson | USA / Real Salt Lake
11- D- Richard Hastings | SCO / Inverness CT
12- M- Issey Nakajima-Farran | DEN / FC Nordsjælland
13- M- Atiba Hutchinson | DEN / F.C. København
14- D- Dejan Jakovic | USA / DC United
15- M/F- Josh Simpson | GER / FC Kaiserslautern
16- F- Simeon Jackson | ENG / Gillingham FC
17- D/M- Jaime Peters | ENG / Ipswich Town FC
18- G- Joshua Wagenaar | ENG / Yeovil Town
19- D/M- Kevin Harmse | CAN / Toronto FC
20- M- Patrice Bernier | DEN / FC Nordsjælland
21- M- Chris Pozniak | SCO / Dundee FC
22- G- Kenny Stamatopoulos | NOR / FC Lyn Oslo (on loan from Tromsø I.L.)
23- F- Charles Gbeke | CAN / Vancouver Whitecaps FC

We're only missing two players, one of whom isn't technically signed yet. DeRo, Serioux, Nana and Brennan remain with TFC.

Canada's first game is July 3 in LA against Jamaica, followed by a trip to Columbus on July 7 to face El Salvador, then the final group stage game against Costa Rica in Miami on July 10.

From the release: "Should Canada advance, it will play in the quarter-final stage on 18 or 19 July in Philadelphia or Dallas, the semi-final stage on 23 July in Chicago, and the final on 26 July in New York."

The final is awfully close to the first leg of the Puerto Rico series. Looking at the roster, I don't think Canada can advance that far, although stranger things have happened. I think a semi-final spot is a reasonable goal for this rag-tag side, anything more is gravy.

-------Peters---------- McKenna -------------- Jakovic-------Hailnault-------
-------Stalteri----------Deguzman ------------ Hutchinson ---- DeJong------
--------------------------- Gerba ----------- Jackson ---------------------------

Im sure this wont be the exact squad, but i would like to see something along those lines and having all this youth in the backline can only help for the long run...

Also, Will Johnson could very well play Stally's right mid spot and we could spring Stally as RB

Also looking at this lineup again... we can put a sturdy 2nd lineup out there and do ok

----------------------Wagenaar ---------------------
------Harmse----- Cann ----Hastings-------- Klukowski--
---Issey-------Bernier ---- Pozniak------Simpson -----
------------------Johnson ---- Gbeke -----------------

Anyone have any idea what the TV situation is for this? Sportsnet?

I'm hoping we get every match like last time as well. I believe it was Gol TV that covered the non-Canada games.

Seano, I'd like to see Stally playing RB personally. I'd go with this 4-4-2 formation.

Stalteri-----McKenna----Jakovic----Klukowski
Johnson--De Guzman--Hutchinson--Nakajima
---------------Gerba---------Jackson-----------

Bench:
Stamatopoulous (GK), Hainault, Hastings, Peters, Bernier, Simpson, Gbeke

We could always switch to Johnson upfront and slide in Simpson/Bernier/Peters to play the wing.

It looks like the Gold Cup rosters are larger this year - I don't think we were able to bring 23 players to the tourney before.

How far this team goes I think partly depends on whether the other teams in the tourney will be bringing their top or nearly-top teams. Our squad is a bit stronger in some areas (wasn't expecting to see Klukowski there) but weaker in others (no Hirshfeld). Unfortunately we are in the toughest group & this squad hasn't been together much, so that won't help either.

I emailed Sportsnet, and they said they are currently in "negotiations" for the tourney and can't confirm anything at this time.

Just checking the Group Stage matches for Canada, and Sportsnet has room for the first 2 games, but has a Blue Jays conflict for the 3rd match.

Anyone else worried that Asmir Begovic will fly the coup for Bosnia?

With Bosnia set to call him up in August, it will be interesting to see what happens. Too bad Pompey wouldnt let him miss some pre-season.
