Title: Asmir Begovic
Description: no longer playing for Canada?

Lopper - July 6, 2009 06:15 PM (GMT)
Just read in a newspaper article that he has chosen to play senior for Bosnia (both parents) instead of playing for Canada anymore? Anyone else hear or read that somewhere?

Too bad if true. A good young keeper, and considering that Hirschfeld and Sutton are now in there 30's, an upcoming starter in his early 20's was good for the NMT. Who's next in line - I remember hearing about another young kid playing in the English system (Adam Street or something)?

There's a fairly lengthy thread on this over at the Voyageurs. Unfortunately, it does sound like he's about to jump to Bosnia, as early as August. It's really too bad that Dale Mitchell didn't play him in that last World Cup Qualifying game after Canada had already been eliminated.

Called this one. With the success Bosnia is having now he would be almost an idiot not to join 'em.
As soon as Jermaine Jones chose USA after playing in some friendlies for Germany. I thought the lack of play Asmir has gotten for Canada will push him to switch allegiance. Agree he should of been playing in some WCQ matches.
Regardless, good luck too him wherever.

I was thinking about this FIFA rule, and how it may affect some CONCACAF teams. There are some English players who have no choice of cracking the squad that could go play for Jamaica, the likes of Jermaine Pennant is the only one that comes straight to mind but I am sure that there are many more.

The Begovic news is a shame though, how did the man not get a cap ahead of the likes of Waagenar.

There is a difference between this guy choosing to play for Bosnia (a country he was born in I believe) than WhoreGreaves or De Guzman playing for England or The Netherlands.

If you are born in Canada you should play for Canada. That is as simple as it gets for me. If you shoose to not play for Canada you are dead to me.

I see it differently.

Where you were born means nothing. Instead, where you grew up and learned the game is what's important. In Asmir's case: Canada.

This is yet another kick in the nuts.

Asmir was in Bosnia for his first 5 years, then moved to Germany for 6-7 years, then moved to Canada for 4-5 yrs before joining Portsmouth.

I can see why it's a tough decision for him.

What's frustrating with this decision is the fact the CSA did put $$$ on Asmir with him being involved in the National program since he's 15 yrs old. With him possibly looking the other way, it's like we've lose an investment and we could've used that money on another kid who would've played for us.

Anyways, I must say I have mixed feelings toward this and I'm not ready to blame Asmir if he decides to play for Bosnia.

PS: Wagenaar just had a couple of starts in the Dutch Eredivisie when he received his only cap in 2006. Not sure I see a problem with him being selected over Asmir at that time.

I have nothing against Wagenaar, but at Yeovil I am pretty sure he was the #2 behind Begovic when Asmir was there.

You dont get held on to by a somewhat decent EPL side if you are not a very good player. I just dont see why Asmir wasnt capped in one of the friendlies we played.

Well, you asked how Josh was cap before Asmir. I explained to you that at the time Josh was cap (in 2006) his club situation was better than Asmir (who was 3rd or 4th keeper with Pompey and had no pro experience).

Today, it's obvious Asmir is a more interesting prospect than Josh and that's why Asmir was called to the GC but when he refused Josh was call.

Just read this @ The 24th Minute....

QUOTE
In non-Gold Cup Canada news, interim manager Stephen Hart told Full-Time Soccer that he believes that U20 goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who holds a Canadian and Bosnian passport, will play for Canada, stating that it was just circumstances involving the birth of Begovic's child that led him to miss getting cap-tied in this tournament, and he hasn't heard anything about Bosnia.
