Description: ...again

The Canadian Soccer Association needs to revamp its structure and more than double its budget to a minimum of $25 million by 2013, the organization says in a new five-year plan released Tuesday.

More than a year in the making, the association's "Strategic Plan" and "Strategic Activities" 2009-13 documents are billed as "the starting points to a co-ordinated approach to soccer's future in Canada."

The documents are long on good intentions and, at this stage, largely short of specifics other than identifying a myriad of areas that have to be fixed or improved.

Still it recognizes that the sport in Canada needs to be fixed.

Canadian Press

Judging from what I've seen since I started following Canadian soccer, should I believe they are capable of any of this?

There's some more information and discussion on this over at the V's board.

And to answer your question: no, you shouldn't, at least not as currently structured / governed.

Looks very generic. It's almost as if the forumulated a plan for any business in history then inserted the word "soccer" at the end.

I refuse to believe any of this is going anywhere. When people in charge of the game in Canada have or lose their jobs based on competitive results, as opposed to the will of a bunch of minor soccer associations, that's when we're going to get ahread.

wellness to the world cup...what the fuck does that mean?

and if you look at the financial "projections" they see that the only way they can get to $25 million is if the MNT makes the world cup in 2014. Is that not putting the cart before the horse?

excellent analysis, man. when i first read the thing, it seemed to me the proposal started this way: "does anyone here speak management-speak?"

I'm reminded of another group with a similar business plan.

Getting to $25 million per year is fairly easy math.

Currently, the CSA has a budget of approx $13 million.

They are currently proposing a $5.00 per head registration tax increase (they will be asking the OSA for its support next weekend at the Westin hotel near the airport). If they get that tax increase, based on a registration base of 850,000, they are looking at an annual budget increase of $4.25 million per year.

Now the budget will sit at $17.25 million annually.

I've been told by a CSA director (executive level) that what they really want is a total of $10 registration tax increase, which they'll likely try to phase in over the next 4 years ($1.25 per year is a lot easier to swallow than getting hit with $5 per person in one shot). Based on current registration levels, that will bring the annual budget to almost $22 million.

However, they've stated that their registration goal by 2013 is 1 million players. A $10 total registration tax increase coupled with 1 million players = $10 million per year extra in CSA coffers by 2013.

So, that's the easy way to get to $23 million.

To get to $25 million will entail finding $2 million in extra revenue per year from sponsors and other revenue sources. Of course, they also have to avoid losing revenue. It's my belief that some current sponsors are already heading for the door (esp. Adidas) so they'll have to replace those sponsors and find new ones. Tough task.

Of course, if the MNT had found a way to get into the 2010WC, achieving the $25 million budget by 2013 could be accomplished quite easily because winning brings sponsors out of the woodwork.

If there are people who feel like I do, which is that pulling $10 million out of our communties to fund an organization that has no track record of success and has no accountability mechanisms in place to punish failure would be a travesty, come out to the OSA AGM on Nov. 8-9 at the airport Westin. We may not be direct stakeholders but I really believe we should let our voices be heard.
