Call her up. Talk about things the two of you might have in common, such as music/movies/whatever. Finding out that you have similiar interests ahead of time will help when it comes time for you to go on a date with her (if it comes to that.) Good luck, Tim! :)

If the two of you have mutual friends or people you hang out w/, sometimes the first date goes better if you go w/ a group of people. It takes away some of the awkwardness of being alone together.

For a first date, I recommend going out to eat and then seeing a movie. Don't go anywhere too fancy to eat (unless you really want to.) Pizza joints are awesome. There are usually a lot of people around and it's usually fairly noisy, so no awkward silences. Plus, the service is usually pretty quick, if you are on a set time for your date.
Movies are good, too. There is 90-120 minutes where you'll just be sitting there, focused on the show, so the silence is actually appreciated then, and not awkward. Anyhoo, good luck. I hope the both of you get something worked out and have a most excellent time. :)
