Title: The Look Between Sybil and Matthew

Laura - March 25, 2011 07:49 PM (GMT)
In episode 6, when Matthew is helping Sybil up, there's a definite look passing between Matthew and Sybil. It seems quite obvious that Sybil is all starry eyed, but what about Matthew? Did he feel a spark there? Why was he smiling when she said "If you'll take me" and why was he so tender when he said "Lean on me"?

It's quite understandable that Sybil would start crushing on her knight in shining armour (who is a tad on the dashing side!), but was there anything on Matthew's side?

Do you think the whole scene is meant to foreshadow some possible Matthew/Sybil in series 2, or just there to make Mary jealous and cause her to acknowledge her growing feelings for Matthew?

There's a part of me that would quite enjoy it - partly because it could be an interesting twist.

And then of course my rabid Sybil/Branson fangirl kicks in...

Anyway - I think part of it is him enjoying the attention. Since Mary blows hot and cold with him every ten minutes, suddenly having Sybil staring at him all starry-eyed.... Well, I can't blame him for enjoying it!

I am also of the opinion that Matthew Crawley is, at heart, an awful flirt. A gentleman flirt, but a flirt all the same. And I wouldn't put it past him to be more indulgant of Sybil than he should just to give Mary a taste of what it felt like, what with the whole Strallen-baiting shenanigans (poor Strallen)

...that and Sybil is adorable.

I love the idea of Matthew being a complete flirt! (I'm not sure I really see it, but I still love it!) Mary would totally deserve it as well if he happened to indulge all the women who wandered across his path and appreciated his pretty looks. *Mind starts churning out story possibilities...*

I think it's just that he is genuinely charming, and I can see him just being slightly more charming when it comes to pretty young ladies XD We're not talking Joey from Friends...

...although I would totally read that fic ("Mary." She glanced up - Matthew smirked, nodding slightly. "How you doin'?")

HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!

Oh my goodness I just snorted and howled at my laptop. Oh dear. I LOVE that image!!

Hmm, I think I could see Matthew as a bit of a flirt, but more an unconscious flirt I think. I could maybe, MAYBE see him exaggerating his attentions on occasion to show Mary what it's like - I quite like that idea - but on the whole I think he's just wonderfully charming!

It's a difficult one with Sybil. I think he is probably quite shocked by the sudden attention, and at a loss of how else to respond, is attentive to her, if that makes sense?

This scene has always bothered me a bit, because I worry they may go down Matthew/Sybil. As a rabid Mary/Matthew fan, I just don't like that idea! :P

I have to say though, I do think it's just that Matthew quite likes the attention. Perhaps not in a romantic, "Sybil has a crush on me" sort of way, just that a pretty girl is being nice to him. It reminds me rather of how pleased he looked when Edith invited him along to the church visits. I have no doubt Matthew does not likes Edith in that way at all and he's obviously pretty clueless as to why Edith is inviting him!

I think he's just pleased to get some attention fron the Crawley sisters, especially considering that one in particular is not always that nice to him!

Plus, in terms of Sybil, I think he is somewhat concerned for her and is being more gentle due to that. I also think he is quite enjoying being a knight in shining armour, even though he probably doesn't know there's a romantic current in it from Sybil. When Sybil gazes so starry eyed at him, I do think Matthew is a bit "errrm ok" and is not quite sure what to make of it.

Or well anyway, that's what my rabid Mary/Matthew shippy head likes to tell me! :D

I think Matthew didn't have any romantic intentions at all, considering he proposed to Mary like an hour later.

I just figured he was being nice to his naive young cousin who got herself knocked in the head.

I don't even know that Sybil really had a crush on him. She just got hit in the head pretty hard and seemed not at all concerned that Mary was practically engaged to him in the next episode.

In the end I think it was just a means to force Mary's hand. You M/M shippers are worrying too much! There is NO WAY Matthew and Mary will not happen eventually. I am only ambivalent towards M/M and I would be EXTREMELY surprised if it ended in Matthew and Sybil (or Lavinia, or anyone else for that matter). The first season would pretty much have been a waste of time.

@MLT - I'm glad of your optimism that Mary and Matthew will get together in the end. I truly hope your right. I just have this little, annoying, nagging doubt that Fellowes will pull a shocker and NOT get Mary and Matthew together in the end. Sybil I think could be a possibility.

Anyway, I've decided to do some photographic evidence of the Matthew/Sybil look and the later Matthew/Mary look:

Plus any excuse for more Matthew pictures!!! :D

I have to say though, I do think the way he looks at Sybil is quite a bit different to the way he looks at Mary! There's plenty more Matthew to Mary looks in my sig too!

Wow :D Laura thank you for those pics! >< By the way, I love the way Matthew looks at Mary- it is almost as if he was looking into her soul :P – they say that the ‘eyes are the gateway into the soul;. Maybe that could have brought Mary’s barriers down and then they kissed! I love it! In the other hand, the look Matthew gives Sybil is more like ‘come on little sister stand up and lean on me because everything will be alright’ type of look, I also sense that Matthew looked at Sybil like a little sister who has just clumsily and carelessly tripped over even though people have being warning her from falling. Therefore, serious concussions can make you starry-eyed at the first dashing young man who offers you his hand. Sybil’s part almost look like those fairytale stories where the sleeping princesses looks starry-eyed and dreamy at their princes.
By the way, I love how dishevel and disorientated Sybil looks xD (considering that all the ‘upstairs’ women rarely have a hair out of place!)

@mlt: I agree with you about M/M not happening. What would the point of season 1 if in the end this couple doesn’t happen? I’m edging for this couple to reconcile in season 2, and I think that they would put all these possible love interests in the way to make their odyssey to reconciliation more realistic, credible and interesting. I think that is why Hugh Bonnehive said that we are all in ‘for a rollercoaster ride’ in season 2 and Dan Stevens said that season 2 would be a ‘treat’ for everyone.

However, I would still love to see a more sister-brother relationship to be established between Sybil and Matthew in season 2.

Bring on season 2! :D
