Title: RPG Maker VX
FrozenDarkness - February 6, 2008 07:59 PM (GMT)
One thing that can be seen in this community throughout the ages is the influence of the RPG Maker games. I started with RPG Maker 95 back when I first found this site in fifth grade. I've used 2000 extensively. I tried 2003, but I couldn't get into it. I missed XP entirely.
RPG Maker VX is on its way. Will any of you be using it?

moving this to the correct forum

I'm probably going to give it a try.
I've heard some pretty odd things about it, though... Like how it's removing RMXP's third layer (hooray, we get to waste events on making trees again) and mashing every tile into a single set (that has to be murder on memory).
It looks like they've put some event commands that were removed in XP back in, though. Which is good, I guess.

It's worth a shot if it offers enough new fancy pants madness.
doug - February 6, 2008 08:41 PM (GMT)
umm can you make fighting games with this?
JIHAUS - February 7, 2008 05:25 AM (GMT)
I have tried the demo of RMVX, and the overall opinion is bleh.
Although I haven't explored it to its fullest I can see that it's become even more limited than before. You know how RMXP removed some features RM2k3 did? Well this one removed more. Furthermore they're still using an annoying front view default battle system so that pretty much means that if you want a game that looks anything other than crappy canned RTP crap you have to script/code most everything. I suppose that's fine if you're a fan of scripting but for everyone else who isn't well-versed in it, you're pretty much screwed and you might as well stick with rm2k3. And if you have to script that much anyway, then you might as well pick up a real scripting language or a more code-intensive program like Game Maker or something.
One thing that really annoyed me is that they're still using the same sound effects from rm2k. I'm sure at this point most everyone doesn't even use those sounds anymore, but this just tells me that the creators are just milking the name or whatever. I mean for fuck's sake, they've been using the same sounds for years. It's almost as if they don't care about that aspect, which is never a good sign. They could at least use some new sound effects so the overall package doesn't seem like ass and we don't have to run all over the internet or rip from games just to get stuff that sounds decent.
So overall, while it does have some interesting new features, you're also missing a few features which pretty much forces you to download scripts or learn it or else your game will turn into bleh. Yeah it has fancy new graphics but since everyone's gonna hate RTP in 5 seconds anyway that doesn't matter. So yeah, I'm not impressed.

I might try it for kicks, but I've been trying to pick up Gamemaker as my new project platform. Even got a couple of beginner's bibles for it from the old bookstore.

I'll warn everyone now... it's addictive. Especially the mapping when you get used to the set-up. I'm an addict and I've only been using it for a week or so.
xd
I find the RTP cute and very bright, but also very square. It's better than 2K3 and XP RTP though. IMO.
There are a few problems with it, sure, and having only three layers (including events) as well as front view battles and only a limited amount of chips makes for a few negatives, but the positives are pretty nice.
The message command has been upgraded to allow you to preview the text, add faces, change place on screen (top, mid, bottom) and allows for mass text to be added at the same time. Yes. Mass text as in more than four lines at a time. <3
They kept the local/area switch which is great! Love local/area switches. ^.^
Kept the item/weapon/armour separate tabs and icons.
They also added Quick events. Press a button and you instantly add doors, inns, teleports and chests. Takes the work out of making the same things over and over again.
Did I mention the RTP was cute?

the RTP actually really sucks compared to the old ones

Actually, it is worse than 2KRTP, yes, but better than 2K3 and XP. Comes in about 2nd/3rd in the RTP ratings list.

I believe that you can use RMXP resources in RMVX. For the character set, there is a little program that convert RMXP charset to RMVX.

I really enjoy 2k3 and its chipset an on top of that i really like the side scrolling battle sceene, i really dont like the fact that they had taken this away. I cant stand the front view of days of old. Hated with RPGMaker 95 and hate it today.
Dajhail - February 27, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it's really strange how they took the feature out. I can't think of one rpg maker game that uses front view, no one likes it.
MrFrost - February 27, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
it's retarded and i refuse to use any thing else till they fix it or atleast give us the option of switching it or something. what do they think it is 1994?
squirrel - February 28, 2008 05:02 PM (GMT)
I'll have a look, since we'll probably cover it on the site.
The Morphine Child - February 28, 2008 08:11 PM (GMT)
It doesn't run on mac, so not at all.
But seriously, I'll take a peek, I do like the idea of the dungeon creator, though I still haven't switched from rm2k.
MrFrost - February 28, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
if there is a some what simple way to have a side view during battle i would think about looking it up and giving it a shot but at this point i dont wanna leave my rm2k3.
Dajhail - February 29, 2008 11:17 AM (GMT)
English version's for sale now apparently, so I added a link in the first post to the official download page. In case anyone felt like buying it.
squirrel - February 29, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
I'd be very surprised if they didn't reimplement the side-view battle system as a downloadable module or such like. If not, someone is bound to make one and release it as a 'skeleton' game for other people to build on top of.
At least, if I was into RMVX that is what I'd do.
MrFrost - February 29, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
thanks for looking into it squirrel, i do hope that someone comes up with something. I really, really hate the front view.

front views are only done well in the dragon quest games
and they all have amazing animation(cept the monsters series, coincidentally the funnest ones)
xsolarx - March 2, 2008 11:15 AM (GMT)
RTP-wise I think it looks better than XP. Also, looks like it can do some blur effects and animate enemies too? Kind of neat.
I probably won't use it, though.
nano - March 11, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)
The only two draws I saw in rmxp was the extra mapping layer and mp3
support. Still, it was not enough to make me switch off of 2k3. VX looks
to be a step down even from XP so I find it unlikely I'll use it. I'll dl and
check it out though.

Well, RMVX is downloadable at the
RMVX english homepage . the dl will give you a 30 day trial. after that, you must buy it. Would you like a way around that? Forget it. That discussion is not welcome here as that would be warez. The same pretty much applies for RMXP. You might be able to find RM2K/3 through google, and we'll just leave it at that.
