I voted 7 because I beat the game 3 times, got all the friggin' magic candy jewels, bred the gold chocobo, and watched that girl get killed and frigging laughed my ass off about it. Also, it has spawned more Doujin (and other assorted hentai) than any other final fantasy that I know of, a movie and OVA, and a couple more games. Obviously it is the best because Square is still milking it for all it is worth 10 years after we all thought Sephiroth was a pretty neat guy and that Cloud was an absolute cock gobbler, and they will still be making money off of us because of it all the way into 2017 with the 20th anniversary.
What other installment in the series can compare?
oh yeah, I killed all 4 of those super monsters too.

Final Fantasy VIII is the most impressive of them, to me. The cutscenes are still awesome now (even though they look like they're realtime rendered these days) and it has some amazing design work. Especially the design of the Ragnarok, which is easily the best looking 'airship' the Final Fantasy games ever had.
But FF IX is just a better game. So I voted for that.
