Title: Rate the last movie you've seen
Description: The last movie you've seen... rate it!
Dajhail - February 22, 2008 08:41 AM (GMT)
It's like a 'what movie are you watching?' thread, except with opinions!
The last film I saw was Shoot 'Em Up, starring Clive Owen. It's not the most intelligent, gripping, moving, thrilling, inventive, witty or inspirational action movie ever made, but to be fair I doubt it was ever intended to be. It's just a nice little action movie with great characters and moments of genius, that goes about its carnage with charm, enthusiasm, and a grin on its face.
3/5 - Recommended.

Hot Fuzz,
Inexplainably lame yet funny on a bizarre level. It's an action comedy set in rural England about an alleged super-cop who has to deal with the idiotic (and sinister) inhabitants of England's "best village".
7/10

The Godfather 8/10
It was a good flick, an it was the first time i had ever watched it.
Dajhail - March 5, 2008 07:22 PM (GMT)
I have just seen
Aeon Flux, and I kinda wish that I hadn't now. It had a couple of interesting visuals and an unusual setting, but the characters and story were so bland that the first time I watched it I only lasted an hour in and gave up. This time though with the help of a
RiffTrax commentary I was able to make it to the end, and it really wasn't worth the effort.
Rating 2/5 - I didn't hate the movie, but I didn't get any enjoyment out of it either.

The Darjeerling Limited
This movie was straight up my alley. It takes place on a the "Darjeerling Limited", and they shot all the train scenes with a real moving train. Very dialog based so you have to like movies with a less North American vibe. Funny and visually interesting.
4/5 ;D

Juno
Abortion Jokes? Check.
Teen Pregnancy Jokes? Check.
Semi-allusions to Adult Child Sexual Relationship? Check.
Two cast members from Arrested Development for the win? Check and mate!
I thought it was a pretty damned good movie. Had a good pace to it and just the right kind of levity to detract from the serious issue presented, while not going all out and tastelessly making fun of it. It was a decent balance of sarcasm, dry wit and comedic timing that made it a funny but genuine film. It was a bit slow at parts, but that can be forgiven.
8.5/10

MC I think you are the first guy that I know of that has watched that movie and said anything about it. Most of the guys I know are like... "I took my girlfriend to see it...end"
So I started thinking that maybe it was more of a girl-geared movie. But I'm glad you reviewed it because it doesn't seem like that is the case, and that those guys are just retarded and can't tell a good movie from a shitty one.
I will definitely see it if it's as good as you say.

I think your the first person I met who hadn't outright dismissed this movie. regardless of wether they'd seen it.
Well I last saw Juno, which I particularly enjoyed; although largely I feel becuase of its excellent soundtrack. (4/5) However someone just posted on that.
'Stardust' was the previous movie, which again I enjoyed very much. Couldn't really go wrong with that cast, and they didn't. Good old fashioned fun, took me back a bit actually to the days when all you needed was a good script and 90MINS!! to make a solid adventure film. (4/5)
I'm on a roll with good movies, saw No Country (excellent film) and There will be Blood; (again excellent.) and Cloverfield which I thought was rather entertaining, what what!
The Morphine Child - March 7, 2008 06:54 AM (GMT)
I guess it was that half-year I worked at the abortion clinic (and I'm not joking here either, :D). I dunno, I like movies... I'll go see one if it has a decent enough rating and I don't -know- the subject matter. I'll go see Rambo turn people into meat confetti without a second thought, but Juno I actually had to take a peek at the reviews to see if it'd be worth seeing, and they said it was, so I gave it a shot.
Oh and most of the guys you know must be too proud to admit this one little fact:
GUYS LIKE JAILBAIT THAT PUTS OUT hell I know I couldn't argue watching it when presented with that piece of illegal meat on the sinful temptation platter xd
Anyway, new review!
Alvin and the Chipmunks (2008)
Got drunk... Watched it... Was surprised it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I would recommend it to anyone who may have kids. It's tolerable to watch thanks to Jason Lee's comedic timing. I say tolerable, not enjoyable. The script is meh. The CG is borderline decent. The soundtrack made my ears hurt. It's a good kids movie, and I'd recommend it as that much.
6/10 for kids
3/10 for adults

The Bucket List-
I would go see this movie expecting to see some old dudes livin' it up before they croak.
Lots of well placed humour, effects are pretty good, and visuals are interesting. (They go to different countries I'm always into that) Inspiring and heartwarming. I saw this with a girlfriend... can't say how you'd guys recieve it, but Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are always good times, so I'd recommend it.

1/5 for ockham

Just seen Justice League - New Frontier and it was pretty good. Nice visuals, good voice acting, decent script, but not a great plot. The 'villain' of the story is more or less stumbled upon by characters off screen near the end, and the events leading up to it seem barely connected. I haven't read the original comic, but it feels like the point of the story was diluted in translation. But it was still entertaining from start to finish.
Rating 3/5 - If you have any interest in superhero cartoons you'll probably like this one.
Linzi - March 15, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
Bee Movie
This is a good movie to sit back with your gf/bf and enjoy a cutesy movie (Oh and if you have kids...them too!). Like most of the computer animated films out there, this one has some mild humour that has more of an adult side. For some parents it might not be suitable for their kids... but if they are too young to understand it then go ahead! What I'm trying to say is that I thought it was funny for what it was, a movie about Bees with famous celebrity voice actors doing the voices. The only problem I had with it was that I feel like Renee Zellweger has an annoying voice to begin with.... but it is even worse when you have to listen to it coming out of an animated character.
3/5

Taxi to the Dark Side
It's a documentary about torture in Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, Abu Gahrib in Iraq, and Gitmo in Cuba. I brought popcorn. I thought it was going to be more intense and graphic. the most graphic parts were Iraqis force to play with their cocks on camera (seriously). The movie didn't really go into the hardcore torture that is taking place, so over all I think it wasn't as powerful as it should have been
3/5 - KK4
1/5 - normal human beings
Jumper
Kid can teleport, Samuel L Jackson. The movie is about a guy who can teleport at will, and runs away from home and lives by robbing banks. the guy lives a pretty bitchin' life until Samuel L Jackson decides to get medieval on his ass. There are exotic locations, some LULZ and other things which you may find entertaining. However, I feel that the ending was forced and there wasn't enough time for character development
3/5

Meet the Spartans,
3/5.
Think it started off great but it ran out of things to mock about 2 thirds into it so started using already used gags/jokes etc

Into The Wild 8/10
I thought this looked pretty interesting when I first heard about it and found that it was more or less what I had expected. The film follows Christopher McCandless' (Emile Hirsch) journey of self-discovery into the wilderness, and acts to interestingly both uplift and criticize McCandless' travels. Hirsch delivers a pretty convincing performance and Hal Holbrook definitely deserved his Oscar nom (though I haven't seen No Country for Old Men yet so I can't say whether he deserved a win over Bardem). I recommend it if you find the premise at all interesting.
The Spiderwick Chronicles 7.5/10
I actually took my younger brother to see this yesterday and thought it was a decent kid's movie. Basically a family of four, twins Jared and Simon (both played by Freddie Highmore) their older sister Mallory and their mother (Mary-Louise Parker, who I was rather suprised to see), move into an old house once owned by distant relatives. Jared happens upon a book with a warning not to open it (and of course does anyway) unleashing a multitude of magical creatures and the like in the nearby vicinity. The rest of the film is basically the kids fighting off the baddie among these creatures, an ogre named Molgrath, while dealing with some family issues (the family doesn't initially seem to get along because a certain daddy issue which I won't get into). Highmore does a pretty good job (I didn't even know he was playing both characters until later) though I did cringe at quite a few scenes and Parker wasn't anything special (especially considering I love her in Weeds). There are also some nice action sequences, especially near the end, and the movie overall is worth a pick-up if you're looking for a movie directed at a younger audience.

What did you think of the sound track? From what I know Eddie Vedder did it and I was thinking of buying it. Any thoughts?
atlas - March 21, 2008 11:10 AM (GMT)
The soundtrack to Into the Wild is actually really well done and fit the movie's earthy feel really well. Not sure how we'll it would work away from the movie tho. Ohh and you can actually understand what Eddie Vedder is saying for the most part.
Griven - March 24, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
I've watched a few movies in the past week and liked all of them...
The Darjeeling Limited I watched and i thought it was absolutely dynamite...I thought it was funny and very entertaining. The dialogue was good and the setting was good too. I didn't really know what to expect going into watching this because the previews didn't really give much, except made me think "maybe i'd like to see this", but it was generally a movie i could watch again and still enjoy.
4/5
Next was juno which, even though linzi thinks guys only see it with their gf's i watched by myself on my computer cause i am wicked cool. I actually really enjoyed it as well. Although I think Michael Cera is like the greatest Canadian actor ever (a bit of an embellishment) ever since i saw him in arrested development. But the movie was funny and had a good story with a soundtrack to match. I think the reason this movie is so good and doesn't cross lines with all the abortion stuff and that is because of Juno's attitude towards the entire thing, she's clearly having a rough time but is also making light of it with a lot of sarcastic jokes. That's all i gots to say about that one...
Aaaaand last but not least, Into the Wild. I saw the last hour and 45 minutes of it and i thought it was a good movie, a little cheesy at times with how he effects peoples lives every which way he meets. I know it has to do with the whole free spirit thing and how everyone admires it etc. but still, not everyone is gonna fall head over heels for this guy when they meet him. Other then that I thought it was a good movie and enjoyable. For me it is something I've actually thought about doing (never really seriously) and would like to do but could never do...
That is all...I doubt people will read this post because it is more then 3 lines...
Edited so i said the movie, thanks daj...
Dajhail - March 25, 2008 12:11 AM (GMT)
I think you forgot to tell us the name of the third movie.
I've just seen Spider-Man 3 and it was pretty good. Nowhere near the trainwreck I was expecting. It definitely could have been shorter and more focused, maybe by cutting out one of the villains, but overall I thought it worked.
Rating 3/5 - Drags a bit, but definitely watchable.

I have to admit I didn't pay too much attention to the soundtrack, but from what I can remember atlas basically has it down right.

Strings-
Well it is a epic fantasy movie using puppets...haha that is the best way I can describe this film. It was a bizarre find for me....(It was in the anime section???) but I did enjoy it if only for the media in which it was delivered. The storyline itself was typical and predictable however this film isn't like most movies using puppets... It doesn't try and pretend that they aren't puppets, in fact, much of the movie including how they live, how they are detained, and how they die is based off the fact that they have freaking strings attached to them... Anyway, If you can find it...I would recommend watching it.

Oh, and the last film I watched was Baseketball, which gets an AWESOME/5. I probably mostly love it for nostalgia's sake. I won't lie. It's not as clever as Orgazmo, but it's good.

While not an award winning film at all - it was very entertaining. For a film you can just sit down and watch casually it was really awesome. I dont know why it got some negative reviews - I couldnt really find any flaws in it.
Its worth seeing if you fancy going to le cinema.

Ransom.
It was pretty funny to see Delroy Lindo again, playing a very similar role to the one he had in Kidnapped, the TV miniseries. Other than that, it was pretty mediocre I guess.
