Hey guys,
I want to get accepted on a school for game design and developers and i have to create a portfolio.. A map with drawings, stories whatever... but I can't seem to get my mind around it.. get my game up to create good things..
And my drawing skills aren't THAT great... I read this book called "How to Draw Anime & Game Characters" by Tadashi Ozawa wich helped me ALOT about drawing but I still feel i don't know where to start....
am I just lacking confidence or spirit? Or you guys have tips to start working on your game portfolio?
To be more helpful it would be useful to know more specifics about the course, and whether its more oriented towards visual design or gameplay. What they'll really want to see is that you can communicate your ideas. For something to do though, try writing a game design document, use chris taylors as an example if you want, it's a good template. Go through and fill it in with as much detail as you can, and write it as if nobody else knows anything about this game but you, it'll be a good chance to look at the artwork thing too, since you can draw maps and character sketches (though normally there would be an artist in charge of that).
To add to your porftolio, maybe consider modding a game if you can do it, or use your design document to create something in game maker (unless your programming skills are up to something bigger). Either way they wont be expecting the design doc for supreme commander from people as entry requirements :P
allright! That's good advice! The template really helps! About the course... well it's more focussed on visual art, design of the game, bits writing the story, game concepts etc.
You can also pick the programming course but then in the above, visual art is replaced by programming etc.
here you see the general program of the course:
The first year
* Communication skills
* Ludology
* Naratology
* Project management
* Game technology
The second year
* Game architecture
The third year
* Game production
* Game business
and if you want to know more (english) here's the website:

That's good, that's a bit like mine, though it's programming oriented. Looking at that, the design doc is a good way to start, make sure you go over the top on the parts that the course works on, like the art and the story. Even if it's not that great, they'll see the effort behind it, and that's what counts for things like entry requirements.
Be sure to post up anything cool :P
