Title: what
Description: the game itself
spik - April 11, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
Alright. Brian sparked me to make this topic, which is something that's been in my mind for a long time.
We've got a lot of talent here on RPG2kNET, whether it be artistic talent, design talent, coding talent, musical talent, it's there. Let's make a 2knet game, no, not another Convergence, I mean a game by 2knet, not about 2knet.
I say that we get a team, design a game, and make the fuck out of it.
Who's on board?
Spik
Adrian
Daj(?)
Ideas?
Spik: Some sort of adventure-platformer (ala, Metroidvania) would be great.
Adrian: If there's enough interest in this I agree that a metroidish platformer would be a good idea. That way everyone could do some level design without really compromising the whole much.
Platform?
Spik: GM
Adrian: GM, MMF

What software would you recommend for a project like that? Game maker? MMF2? I know it's possible to make a map editor and expandable stuff with MMF2 and I doubt any of our programming types here, including myself, want to write a platforming engine from scratch.
spik - April 11, 2008 02:55 AM (GMT)
I think Game Maker would be the engine of choice. It seems to have a big enough community behind it to just about anything with. Though, I'm probably just biased due to using Game Maker myself.
There seems to be enough flexiblity for us to do just about anything, while still being simple to use.

I'm not sure I'll be much help because any time I spend on this is time I'm not spending finishing Convergence, but I think it's a good idea.

spik - April 11, 2008 06:00 AM (GMT)
we're gonna kick knytt right in his little alien testicles.
JIHAUS - April 11, 2008 11:41 AM (GMT)
I'd get in on it, but the only thing I could really offer are my drawings and somewhat decent sprites (not so much animated) and 3d animation if I haven't completely lost that yet. So yeah, I dunno if I'd be much help but I'd get in on it. I guess I could like draw backgrounds or something.
ockham - April 11, 2008 05:12 PM (GMT)
it wont let me vote for every option :fu:

I've always been into beat-em-ups. I think some Action game would be fun, either a beat-em-up or action platformer like Metroid or Contra. Or merge the two somehow. Would be cool. I'd definitely be willing to assist with art and music, but programming-wise I can't help much :(. If we went through with this, I could easily come up with character design and some musical ideas in a flash so you guys can see what I do.
BrianOnTheRocks - April 11, 2008 06:47 PM (GMT)
As I mentioned in the other thread, if you guys would like I can write up a basic plan of what we would need in an actual production environment to make this work. Initial spark is always a great thing, but seeing something through to completion is what matters.
Step 1: What it would require is a forum dedicated to the 2KNET project.
After that, we can start placing the appropriate threads for opinions, discussions and decisions about the game.
Let me just say, I'm beyond stoked that you guys are on-board with this. :)
IDL - April 11, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
I'd be glad to help art-wise, but besides that I'd probably be fairly useless.
BrianOnTheRocks - April 11, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
Well holy crap that was quick! Awesome! Thanks guys!
I'll post some stuff up over the weekend to start discussion rampages and production stampedes!
:)
Takeru - April 11, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Definitely. I'm now anxiously awaiting the plans and development ideas.
adrian - April 11, 2008 09:06 PM (GMT)
Would it be possible to make a separate map editor in Game Maker? I know its possible in MMF2, and GM is pretty similar. It'll be a lot more community oriented if everyone can edit content without needing a copy of Game Maker, which would be a problem if we were using something like RPG Maker 2000 where more than one person working on the core game would be next to impossible.
ockham - April 11, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
i can make the credits page
spik - April 12, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
Sweet jesus. What a response!
Well, from the sound of things, an action-sh'm'up-rpg-platformer is the way to go. Like Metroid meets Castlevania meets... uh. something else.
We seem to have a huge support base, especially in the design area.
Okay. A level editor in Game Maker is entirely possible, though I've never actually made one specifically, I've touched on it in a few different ways (coincedently - yesterday being one of those ways).
Next step is to actually design the game itself.
edit: oh, and Brian, if you're up for working on structure/design doc, that would be super-funkay. You're bound to have tonnes of experience with that sort of stuff, I'd imagine.
edit2: regarding level editor. it's 100% doable. ;D
delita - April 12, 2008 05:36 AM (GMT)
You should be able to pick from multiple 2knet personas for characters.
Delita's pwn stat would be thru the roof..
xsolarx - April 12, 2008 11:46 AM (GMT)
Metroid-like platformer all the way.
BrianOnTheRocks - April 14, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
I'm of the opinion we need to pick one genre with an element of another at maximum. One genre with a never-before-seen mechanic would be best.
Other than that, the obvious choice is -SOMETHING- with an RPG element. But it -is- possible to have an RPG with an action or platforming element.
The simpler, the better.
spik - April 14, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
I think platform RPG is the way to go. It only really borrows the leveling up/skills side of RPG, but adds a bit more excitement. Though, we could essentially make an rpg and just use an RPG Maker, making the whole process much simpler, but I'd rather make something that stands out alot further.

I agree that a platform RPG is probably the correct way to go.
Takeru - April 14, 2008 06:51 PM (GMT)
I will have to agree that a Platform RPG is a good compromise. We can also have some possible player involvement, if the stats that were leveled up were chosen by the player. You could mold a character based on how you want to play, sorta like Crackdown.
Captain_Toasty - April 16, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
Platform RPG or metroid/castlevania style platformer is my choice.
Metroid style with RPG style elements could be a good idea. (ever play cave story?)
BrianOnTheRocks - April 16, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
I am totally all for a platform RPG. I am going to make a final decision vote topic on it...
NOW!
