Hello. I made an action-RPG called Alcarys Complex in Game Maker with the help of some people. You can see some more info here.

What is Alcarys Complex?

Alcarys Complex is an action-RPG (or it at least attempts to be one) coded in Game Maker 7 Pro. It is a collaboration between myself, Couch, Gelatinous Cube, Ocean's Dream and Doppleganger and contains completely original graphics, music and code. I have spent quite a bit of scratch on paying talented people (who deserve every cent, by the way) to help me out with the graphics and sound while coding everything from scratch, from the battle system to the dialogue and actor system.) I'm sure there are a lot of fucking bugs and I'd like to hear about those. Drop me a line through my PM box or post them in this topic. This game is by no means perfect, although with my coming schedule in the months ahead (read: Iraq), it'll probably be abandonware at this point.

What's the story? What does Alcarys Complex mean? How do you even pronounce that first fucking word?

Well, it's pretty hard for me to explain in one go (this means it's convoluted and I need to clean it up) but Alcarys Complex takes place in a world split by a bloodborne virus (known as Tetra-Alcaryine 311) engineered in wartime that gives the infected (known as a Cursor) an alternate animal form, like a second coat of skin. The term 'Alcarys Complex' comes from the various physical and psychological problems that Cursors deal with when faced with the urge to transform into their alternate form.

The full game's story follows eight characters from different walks of life as they travel the lands of Elcaea and fight for the world's order. Whether they're in it for themselves, the money, glory, or each other, they eventually band together to fight various threats to global security, including but not limited to, rogue soldiers, bigoted vice-presidents, psychic human-animal hybrids, and guerrilla terrorist organizations. Without revealing anything, at least one character gets his or her socks blown completely fucking off at one point in the story.

The particular subplot that is shown in this demonstration is that of two militants in the Alcarytic Resistance Movement, or A.R.M, an organization in the Cursors' Grand Duchy of Lessis that disagrees with the ruling Duke on one fundamental issue: they want their own country to govern, and they want to carve it out of Lessis' territory. Their goal in this demo is to kidnap a Lessian Provincial Governor (the Lundmark province's governor, actually) and use him to gain political footing with the Duke.

Also, I realize the writing is pretty shit! I'm not the best writer and I'm actively working on my characterization and the realism of my dialogue. Such advice, no matter how critical, is welcome with open arms.

Character menus let you order your characters to use items and skills. This will eventually be expanded to include advanced artificial intelligence (AI) actions.

Your characters will also occasionally have conversations through what I've called banter boxes. The advantage of the banter box when it comes to storytelling is that you can still move around, access the menu, and perform any other action, but your characters will be talking and revealing story data while you may be concerned with other stuff. The disadvantage of this is that you may be concerned with other stuff and miss story points!

The main menu provides streamlined access to the stats of a maximum of three party members.

Characters

Name: Roger Martello
Age: 41
Type: Cursor

Roger Martello is the founder of the Alcarytic Resistance Movement (ARM). He isn't really 'there' in the head. Having fought in a war or two, he keeps his cool in combat, but he's lost some sanity as a result. He believes in the four classical elements (fire, earth, water, and wind) to an almost fanatical extent, and is known to pray to Dr. Kirk Copeland, the late creator of the Tetra-Alcaryine virus. He has the ability to speak K'athrani, a language that allows its speakers magical powers.

Name: Victor Unruh
Age: 25
Type: Cursor

Victor Unruh is Martello's chief strategist, and comes up with most of the ARM's political leverage schemes. He makes up for his relative inexperience in guerrilla warfare by being able to think quick on his feet, take orders efficiently and act in the absence of orders. He is a more grounded fellow compared to Roger. He has a girlfriend in the ARM named Tricia whom he loves very much (aww). Knows rudimentary healing K'athrani.

Notes

When you kill an enemy, your characters will sometimes have a conversation, shedding more light on their mannerisms and behavior. You can move and still fight while this occurs, but if you leave the immediate area while a conversation is taking place, it will stop when you get to the next area.

Known Bugs

Game-Crashing Bugs
-Trying to add 'no item' to an empty space in the Assault Pack will crash the game

Inconvenient Bugs

-Character item menus do not take away items when you use them
-'Adrenaline' will give an HP boost if you use it on someone who's alive
-The AI occasionally is not facing the enemy when attacking
-The music loops and starts weird in some places
-Character acting not implemented during dialogue
