Title: Remakes!
Description: Which will fail the most?

Highlander remake

Robocop remake

Two more classic eighties movies are apparently being butchered remade for the 21st century. Which of them do you think will be the biggest failure, or is there another remake coming that you feel will disgrace its esteemed original even worse?

Out of those two, I think the Highlander remake will probably fail the hardest. It's kinda hard to tell, these two films might be alright but they'll almost certainly be overshadowed by the originals. Expect a 500% increase in sales of the original DVDs when these get released, and probably a new boxset or some shit.

The thing with Robocop is it was perfect in the 80s. Robocop as a character reminds me of the end of those 80's cartoons, where the stars tell you not to hide in fridges. That sort of thing is part of an era and needs to stay there. However, due to Robocop being robotic it lends itself to CG a lot more than Highlander. I think it'd work alright if they stray from the original a bit more and be obvious about it being a remake.

They'll probably do something stupid like remake E.T. soon. -__-

I'd like to see a new Dark Crystal/Labyrinth/similar film, but with proper puppeteering...

robocop is too good to remake.
the highlander remake will suck if they use all sorts of dumb cgi

Robocop's as close to perfect as any action movie gets, the visual effects still stand up fine, the action is violent and awesome, the soundtrack is iconic and the acting is great. I can't see how they could improve on it, especially as action movies these days are neutered and watered down.

On the other hand Highlander definitely isn't a perfect movie, but it's got tons of charm. Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery are entirely miscast but somehow this just makes their characters even more awesome, Clancy Brown makes a great villain, and Queen's soundtrack is unique and irreplaceable.

I think a Highlander remake's got a better chance of actually improving on the original and justifying its existence. But it'd be nice if they start remaking shit movies instead, only doing them right this time. Like, uh, The Rocketeer, or Universal Soldier, or The Shadow, or Eraser, or The Running Man. Actually I liked The Running Man, but you get what I mean.

The problem is if they remake either or these films they'll want to target a larger audience so they'll cut down on the violence and stuff which helped make these films great. I hope neither of them get remade but if I had to pick one it would be Robocop, as long as they just used the idea and changed it quite a lot.

hmm shitty action movie from the 80s #1 or shitty action movie from the 80s #2

tough call im gonna have to say :fu:

Apparently the Robocop remake is actually another Robocop sequel. Possibly directed by Darren 'Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain' Aronofsky.

Can't be any worse than Robocop 2, 3, The Series, or Prime Directives, surely?

belsammael - August 7, 2008 09:15 AM (GMT)
God no :(

I have hopes, little as they may be..that they will still make something nice from Highlander.. however I'm already dreading Johnny Depp McCloud facing off against the joker...

as for Robocop... wanna bet it'll involve terrorists or something like that? =/ Verhoeven was right not to tie his name to the remake...geesh.

I think that Robocop was a horrible concept to begin with. At least Highlander was somewhat cool, and has the potential to be something greater than that god awful TV series.

Dajhail - August 7, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
I think the concept of Robocop is actually pretty strong. On one level it's about corporations putting profit above morality, running essential public services like a business, dehumanising people and treating them like another product, and the the cynical corrupt world that could let this happen. On another level it's got a near indestructible Dirty Harry, going around blowing the shit out of things and shooting people.

I think a remake could actually be really good in the right hands, though they'd have to be able to balance the comedy, drama and action in a way that none of the movies since the first has managed, and have the guts to give it an R rating. But the first Robocop movie got it so perfect, I don't think they should bother. They should just put that back in cinemas again if they want some more money out of the franchise.

Also the Highlander series wasn't bad! What I saw of it was at least as good as the first movie, and way better than the shitty sequels.

Robocop sucks.

Highlander is just going to try and be all IM IMMORTAL THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE and will end up being more of a parody of itself. I can see it all clearly now.
